This antique sampler is a reminder that a love of bright colours is not only a modern phenomenon. H Sophia Baker of Virginia clearly cherished the vivid colours of the wool she used to stitch this little sampler: she used as many colours as she could fit into the design. Thankfully, they have fared well over time and we can still see them today.

I have reproduced Sophia’s sampler, which has a stitch count of 77w x 150h and only uses full crosses over two. The original was stitched on a loose, canvas-type material that is bordered with a red material binding. The original piece measures 22cm wide by 41.5cm high (8.5” x 16.25”).

It is suitable for beginners to advanced stitchers, and can be stitched on Aida, linen or evenweave of any count that you prefer. I recommend using 1 strand of floss over two linen threads.

There are a few odd letters scattered out-of-place in the sampler, and the initials on the lower left are partially lost. I think the first letter is a ‘B’, but I think it would be a good spot to place your initials.

To honour Sophia’s love of colour, I have provided two colourways. If you want to reproduce the original in its more muted tones, you can use the overdyed cottons, or the first DMC conversion.
