    CHEROKEE COUNTY EXTENSION

2017 Cherokee County Fair – More than a “fair” success!

The energy on the Cherokee County Fairgrounds was exhilarating. Hot Iowa weather,

increased numbers, and good neighborly fun culminated in a week of optimism at the

Cherokee County Fair for 4-H families and fairgoers alike. A full schedule of events including

livestock shows, grandstand events, community performances, and 4-H entertainment kept

    energy levels high.

Cherokee County 4-H members were engaged leading up to the fair. They invested

significant resources, hard work and time to create or develop their 4-H projects.

Approximately 160 4-H’ers presented a great variety of exhibits at the 2017 Cherokee

County Fair including 96 4-Hers who showed animals at the fair. 110 4-Hers brought static

exhibits to the fair. Swine, beef, and Sheep/Goat numbers were up this year.

Without the many volunteers we would not be able to have such a wonderful fair each year.

THANK YOU! 4-H members, it was a joy to work with you. Our county has such a great group

of kids and families! Keep up the good work!

Our 4-H Program has so much to be proud of! Please take some time to review what you

are proud of: a project, your club leadership, your community involvement. Complete

an award application to be recognized for your accomplishments! Updated information

is enclosed. If you would like assistance completing your award application, please

contact the extension office at 712-225-6196.

OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH AND ADULTS LEARN, GROW, AND WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSTIVE CHANGE

    Thank You! Thank You!

There are countless people to thank when a fair comes to an end such as the Fair Board, Superintendents,

Club leaders, 4-Hers, Clover Kids, parents, and all fair volunteers. Even as a spectator, you play an

important role in the success of a fair. Thank you and keep up the GREAT work! You really do help to “make the best

    better”!

Fair is not so much about winning as it is about life. Think of all the memories parents and youth make through working

on exhibits together. Think of all the friendships made in the livestock barns and on the fairgrounds that without 4-H or

FFA might not have been made. 4-H offers wonderful opportunities to all who give it a chance and are willing to

    participate.

Life (and fairs) also have disappointments. With every opportunity comes the chance that things won’t turn out like

planned. It is my sincere hope that parents and youth can learn from these disappointments and move forward.

Disappointments make us appreciate the successes even more.

If anyone has any suggestions, comments, or concerns about the 2017 Cherokee County Fair, please feel free to

express them in writing or make a phone call to the office so items can be addressed in upcoming meetings. I hope that

everyone involved will continue their generous support and we encourage others to join them so we can continue the

“fair experience” for the youth in Cherokee County. We will have a Fair Review Meeting Wednesday, August 16th at

    7pm at the Extension Office.

    THANK YOU

    2018 Cherokee County Fair Dates

Tentative dates have been set for the 2018

now! Plans are to run the fair from Thursday,

Did you know the 4-H Clover is an emblem that is protected under the United States Code? 4-H members and clubs do

get to use the clover, but there are guidelines to follow. If there are no “H”s on the leaves, it is just a clover and you can do

what you want. If the “H”s are there, here are some basic things to keep in mind:

You should always use the whole 4-H Emblem. Please don’t remove any leaves or the stem. Don’t put anything on top of

any part of the 4-H Emblem. It is preferred that the 4-H Emblem be in green with white or gold “H”s.

Below the right lower leaf, “18 USC 707” needs to be there. This is part of the United States Code under which the 4-H

Name and Emblem is protected. The official name is “4-H” and is always the numeral “4” separated from a capital “H” with

a hyphen (not a dash, slash, or space). For more information, check out: https://www.4-h.org/Resource-Library/

    Curriculum-Development/Develop/Using-the-4-H-Name-and-Emblem.dwn

You can download a fact sheet on use of the 4-H Name and Emblem under “Regulations”. You can also down-load

emblems to use too. If you have questions about using the 4-H Name or Emblem, give me a call at the Extension Office.
