I am very pleased to announce that Coby Hilgersom and Belinda Field have joined our team. Coby is our new Administrative Services Coordinator. If you happen to call the office, please give Coby a big 4-H welcome! Belinda has taken on the role of Fund Development Coordinator and has plunged into the role with both feet! On August 12th we hosted 4-H BC Community Fun Day in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. The event was located at the IPE grounds in Armstrong. Along with the Armstrong Farmers Market guests were treated to popcorn, cotton candy and cake. September 23rd found us at the Peninsula Country Market on Vancouver Island where we celebrated Canada’s 150th and presented Her Honour, The Hounourable Judith Guichon Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia with an Honorary Membership to B.C. 4-H. Jenna Duke flawlessly planned and executed the day. Belinda expertly MC’d the event using the skills she learned from her days as a 4-H member in Alberta. In addition to the festivities there was a bouncy castle for kids to enjoy and Meet My 4-H Project displays by members of the South Malahat 4-H District club. Guests were treated to free popcorn, cotton candy and cake. Thank you to all

our Partners, 4-H members, leaders and volunteers that made these days a success! 2018 enrolment will be open soon! The process for enrolment will be much easier as you will only have to update fields if the information has changed. Tools are also being created so that we can make changes in house rather than relying on the Software Engineers – yeah!! Watch for our announcement concerning 2018 enrolment.

Hello Everyone – My name is Coby and I am the new Administrative Support Coordinator. I look forward to working with you as I gain more knowledge of my role over the next months. I have a 20 year history in admin / accounting, however each office has its own way of doing thing so I hope you will bear with me as I navigate the ins and outs of 4-H BC. I was raised in the country, we did not have animals but my father raised vegetables to sell to the local groceries. I was always particularly drawn to neighbor’s horses myself, so really envy all your horse folks. I still have the country in my blood and love to spend time cycling, hiking, walking and appreciating nature. I also love to craft in needlework, sewing and helping to build things. Happy Fall! Happy Life! My name is Belinda Field and I’m the new Fund Development Coordinator with 4-H BC. While new to the organization I spent a great deal of time as a 4-H member as a young Albertan doing 4-H Projects in Beef, Sewing and Cooking as well participating in Public Speaking Competitions. I believe it was this exposure to public speaking at a young age that led to my decision to pursue a degree in Communications at the University of Calgary. I graduated in 2000 and later on completed certificates in both Event Planning and Public Relations with Mount Royal College. After recently moving “back to the country” and experiencing acreage living my passion for agriculture was re-ignited. It seems only fitting that I would return to my roots with a position helping to promote the organization that played such a vital role in my development as a young farm girl in Southern Alberta. I’m excited to work with an amazing group of people within 4-H BC and to get my daughter involved in 4-H as soon as possible. It feels like coming home!

New faces at 4-H British Columbia

Dear 4-H BC, When we first moved to Enderby, Mom wanted to find something for us to be involved with as a family, and we found ourselves in the Enderby 4-H Swine Club. When the club leader stepped down, she stepped up. She kept a high bar of family involvement - this wasn’t a program to drop your kids off at. Amidst the public speaking, bottle drives, BBQ’s and IPE shifts, I later heard that this was where many people learned the most about parenting and being a family. Mom went on to be a Key Leader and worked in the 4-H BC office. Over the years Mom received endless amounts of pig gifts – stuffed toys, salt and pepper shakers, jewellery – you name it. She had a treasured pig wall in the living room. Weeks after she was diagnosed with ALS in 2013 she said to me, “I’ve been wondering what to do with the ‘herd’. I was thinking you could put them all around the church at my memorial and people could take one home with them when they leave.” It was a wonderful sight to walk into the church full of pigs as a way of celebrating her life. 4-H was one of the ways that Donna lived out her vocation of being another mom to many kids. She loved this organization and its potential to empower kids and families. Thank you for your ongoing work 4-H BC. Gratefully, Wade Lifton & the Lifton family

The Pacific National Exhibition, located in the bustling metropolis of Vancouver, is not the place one might expect to learn about gardening. From August 19th to August 22nd, those expectations were shattered as sixty-seven 4-H members from across British Columbia flocked to the P.N.E. for the “Let’s Get Growing” Special Education Display Competition! Their creative displays ranged from topics like pollinators and pest-control, to rainwater harvesting and compost. As part of the competition, members attended a seminar hosted by Fresh Roots, an urban farming organization with a passion for educating youth. Members learned techniques to “Garden for Good”, such as using their gardening to benefit their community through initiatives like seed libraries and school gardens. The competition came to a close with the presentation of awards at the 4-H Closing Ceremonies. Chelsey Meyers from the BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation presented the awards to the top ten winners in each category. I would like to extend a big thank you to all the sponsors who helped support this program – without the support of these organizations, 4-H members would not have the same opportunity to learn about such an important topic in B.C. Agriculture, and to share their knowledge with the public. The sponsors for this competition were: the BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation, the Pacific National Exhibition, the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, and 4-H British Columbia! Congratulations to all of the 4-H members who participated in this program!

4-H Friends, My career started as a teacher, but my real education began when I started working in the provincial Ministry of Agriculture as a Youth Development Specialist. My 30 second commercial started, “I am building the agriculture leaders of tomorrow…today.” It was exciting, teaching both youth and adults about leadership, community involvement, the agricultural bounties of our province as well as the opportunities for the future. In 2004, I moved into management of Youth Development Programs and expanded my learning once again. In 2015, I was seconded to the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation as the Executive Director. The Board of Directors of the Foundation have invited me to stay in the position, so for the next chapter of my career, I will work to bring BC’s agriculture to teachers and students in our province. Public service and working with the 4-H program has provided a great place to learn, grow and build a network of remarkable people. I have many great memories of fun people, great teams, and very successful programs all through which we built agricultural awareness. As I continue to work in the agriculture sector I hope to see many of you or even partner in some new initiatives. I’m always in for a good discussion over a chai tea latte or a glass of wine! Pat Tonn

On July 15th the Okanagan Shuswap 4-H Lamb Club got together at the Finlay’s farm where Richard Herlinveaux gave a demonstration on how to manually shear lambs. Afterward all the members had the opportunity to trim their own projects. All members trimmed very well including those who were trying trimming for the first time. We appreciate that Mr. Herlinveaux’s travel expenses were sponsored by B.C. Purebred Sheep Association. After a delicious Subway lunch, Mrs. Dena Finlay gave a husbandry workshop on medications and flock health. We even got to use a stethoscope and take a lamb’s temperature.

This event was followed by Achievement Day which was held at the Finlay’s farm on August 19th. Achievement Day is a very important day for all club members as it is a day to demonstrate the effort that has been put into projects. All of our members did a great job in the ring. In addition, many younger siblings were able to participate in the event in the Cloverbuds division or in the Pee Wee class. It is great to see younger kids wanting to become a part of 4-H. Congratulations to our members Esther Thurgood who received the junior aggregate and Sydney Hogg who received senior aggregate. Our judge for Achievement Day this year was Ms. Sara Kate Smith from Barriere, BC, who did a great job judging and providing valuable feedback.

We would like to thank our sponsors for supporting our club: Valley Wide Meats, Finlay Farm, Blue Mountain Nursery, Mr. and Mrs. Covey, Mr. and Mrs. Mernett, White Rose Farm Services, Neville Eccles and Shuswap Veterinary Clinic.

For more information about our club please contact Mrs. Dena Finlay at 250 546-6223.

With over 7,600 volunteers across Canada, 4-H leaders are the heart of 4-H programming; supporting and guiding more than 24,500 4-H youth members nationwide. Everyday heroes like our volunteer leaders can and do change the world, and with their help, 4-H members are developing skills to become responsible, caring and contributing individuals, affecting positive change in the world around them. Each year 4-H Canada recognizes volunteer leaders through the 4-H Canada National Volunteer Leader of the Year Award. Know an awesome leader who is affecting positive change in the community? Here are five reasons to recognize your 4-H leader! Nominations open September 15, 2017 and close November 30, 2017. Nominate Your Leader Who Loves to Connect with Others Your leader is great at creating connections with your club, your family and your community by making everyone feel welcome. Being self-aware, listening and showing compassion for others are all traits of excellent 4-H volunteer leaders. Your leader uses this ability to create a safe, fun and inclusive environment for 4-H members, encouraging you and your fellow members to grow as responsible, caring and contributing leaders. Nominate Your Leader Who is Authentic 4-H is all about youth working in partnership with caring adults and your leader knows that youth-adult partnerships are an opportunity for members and leaders to authentically collaborate. Your leader values your contributions and this

helps build a culture of accomplishment and confidence within your club. Nominate Your Leader Who Believes in Building Strengths Your leader recognizes that the key to positive youth development is about recognizing a person’s strengths, and helping them to grow these assets through hands-on learning opportunities. Your leader encourages you and your fellow 4-H’ers to identify your strengths, focus on the positive to find meaningful roles within your club to play and to challenge yourself. Nominate Your Leader Who Rises to Any Occasion Great 4-H leaders recognize that the best growth happens when youth take safe risks and challenge themselves to Learn To Do By Doing. Sometimes 4-H volunteer leaders are challenged to Learn To Do By Doing alongside members. Your volunteer leader rises to the occasion, and shows you how to reflect on the challenges and celebrate the successes in equal measure. Nominate Your Leader who Loves to Have Fun! Great volunteer leaders know that 4-H is about more than the mastery of skills and competition. It’s about making friends, new experiences and learning in a safe, fun and inclusive environment. If your leader is not afraid to try something new and promotes project meetings filled with laughter, then you should nominate them for the National Volunteer of the Year Award! Know an awesome leader? Nominate them for National Volunteer Leader of the Year Award! The nomination period is open between September 15, 2017 and November 30, 2017. Visit 4-h-canada.ca/NVLYA for more details.

National 4-H Conference - Washington, DC

4-H LEARNS (Learn, Educate, Access Resources, Network, Support) is now live for volunteer leaders and 4-H professionals around the world! At the Global 4-H Network Summit this past July 11, 2017, 4-H Canada launched 4-H LEARNS, an online resource-sharing community open to all 4-H volunteer leaders, ambassadors and professionals over the age of 18. 4-H volunteers can easily find and select favourite resources relevant to their needs such as webinars, training materials, club-related project resources, presentations, fundraising tips and more. Over seven million 4-H members will benefit from this easy-to-access online hub available at your fingertips. Through 4-H LEARNS’ discussion groups, leaders can connect with their global peers to share ideas, brainstorm and ask questions to a knowledgeable network eager to support one another.

Leaders will eventually also find e-learning events on different 4-H topics and be able to use this platform to communicate upcoming events within the 4-H community. Worldwide, 4-H’ers are learning to implement their own ideas, from start to finish, through club projects and leadership opportunities where they draw lessons from their mistakes and take the first important steps to personal success. 4-H LEARNS will strengthen this world class positive youth development programming with accessible networks and downloadable global resources. We’re building generations of leaders who will change the world in ways we can’t imagine, and our movement depends on us supporting every single one of them. Help us better guide today’s youth to learn in a safe, fun and inclusive environment by signing up for #4HLEARNS at www.4-h-learns.org and start sharing, browsing and adding to this new global resource today!

My name is Sierra Robinson, I am a member of the Cowichan Community 4H Club. This is my 7th year in 4-H and this year I was one of the delegates at Youth Action 4-H BC 2017. I got to travel all the way to Kamloops and participate as part of a group of around 50 different 4-H members. I'll never forget this experience…It is definitely one of my highlights in 4-H now. Youth Action was one of the first 4-H camps I have ever been to other than Jr Camp when I was younger, and I absolutely loved it. I learned a lot about leadership and myself as a youth leader as well as made lots of great new friends! It was amazing to be able to meet so many like minded people. I even learned about ways to put my thoughts and ideas into action, about how I can make a positive change in my community and the power that we as youth hold. We played so many fun games and did lots of team building exercises. I'm really grateful for the facilitators, chaperones and all the people that made this opportunity possible. I'm sure all the delegates would agree that it was a ton of fun and everyone learned lots. I am hoping that I can go back again one day as a facilitator. Submitted by: Sierra R.

My name is Jacinta Meir. I am a member of the Cariboo Wolf Pack 4-H Club in Quesnel BC. This year I was a delegate at Youth Action 2017. This was an amazing experience! We learned so much about ourselves and developed important leadership skills. All of the leaders and facilitators were extremely encouraging and inspirational. Each of us got to learn our own unique leadership style. We discussed important leaders in our life and how they inspired us. We also learned how we can inspire and encourage others to do their best. I would like to thank all of the leaders, facilitators, and chaperones for making this program possible, especially Genevieve for helping me with my confusing travel plans and Juanita for being such an incredible small group leader. Also, to all my friends and fellow delegates, you guys are all amazing leaders! I am so excited to use what I have learned in this program with my family and friends and within my community. This program was an unforgettable experience. I learned so many important leadership skills, made amazing friends, and had an incredibly fun time! Submitted by: Jacinta M.

Hello Readers, This is Peter from the Wonowon 4-H Club. A few of my friends and I from Youth Action have decided to share our 4-H experience with you through a newspaper article. Youth Action is a provincial 4-H program put on by 4-H BC in Kamloops every second year in July. For me, Youth Action was a great week of leadership training, and playing games, while getting to know lots of new friends and reconnect with others. Youth Action helped me with working in a group of others. It was a one time experience, I would like to encourage every BC 4-H member to go there, you will never regret it. Submitted by: Peter W.

This summer I was lucky enough to be accepted to the Youth Action 4-H conference in Kamloops BC. In this conference we learned tons of leadership and teamwork skills, as well as how to be a leader in our community. We learned this through discussions, leading games, teamwork exercises and making plans on how to change our community. During this conference I met lots of people from around BC and became close friends with a couple of these people. It was very cool listening to everybody’s stories from around BC and how their club runs. I was very fortunate to be part of this opportunity and I would encourage other 4-H members to try to attend as well. I feel that this conference has heightened my leadership skills, as well as made me a better team member skills that I will apply to sports and clubs at home. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and I will stay in touch with the people I met and work on the skills I learned. I will remember this opportunity for the rest of my life applying the skills they taught me, and remembering the great experiences I had, people I met and lessons that I learned. The weather could not have been better on September 23rd in Saanich, BC for the Canada 150 Celebration at the Peninsula Country Market. People of all ages came out to enjoy the sunshine and visit various market vendors and the 4-H member projects. With free popcorn, cotton candy, and a bouncy castle, there was no shortage of fun! The 4-H member projects included Sheep, Goats, Small engine, Robotics, Fibre Art, Photography, Honey Bee, and Poultry. It was a great opportunity for the surrounding community to learn more about the 4-H program and to interact with both members and leaders. In addition, there was a special guest appearance from Her Honour, The Honourable Judith Guichon Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Patron of 4-H, and Elizabeth May, MP of Saanich-Gulf Islands. Her Honour was presented with a Lifetime Honourary 4-H Membership for her work over the years with 4-H. Her involvement began as a 4-H leader in the Nicola Valley, and has continued in her current position as a strong advocate for the program and agriculture. Following the presentation, Her Honour and May led the singing of “Happy Birthday” and then proceeded to cut the first slice of cake. Guests were excited for the chance to meet two very influential people while celebrating Canada’s monumental birthday. 4-H members were also paid a special visit from The Lieutenant Governor who took the time to stop by each 4-H booth and learn more about the individual projects. She was very impressed with all the hard work done by the members! The 4-H British Columbia office would like to recognize those who assisted in organizing this memorable day: Susy-Chung Smith, Bob Thompson, Deborah Smith, and Carol Hyland. In addition, a special thank-you to the South Malahat District for volunteering their time to ensure that the event was a success. 4-H British Columbia would also like to thank the generous organizations for supporting this event: The Government of Canada, Canada 150, 4-H Canada, McDonalds, TransCanada, Peninsula Country Market, Thrifty Foods, and The Zone 91.3.
