MISS HELEN COLEMAN

Another Class DepartsTonight the largest class in the h isto ry o f Lyndhurst

H ig h School w ill receive th e ir diplomas and m arch out into the world o f re a lity and cold hostility. No one can accurately predict the fu tu re which lies before them. A t the present time, the future is not the brightest which has ever faced a previous clas*. Jobs are not those things which lie about in great abundance, ready to be had at once. Those who enter college w ill delay th e ir steady employment four more years. T h e ir problem s w ill continue to be much the same as those encountered in high school, except that they w ill prove to be more d ifficult of solution and more serious than any scholastic problem s o f the past.

Those whose theoretical education ends tonight w ill have a four-year s ta rt in earning power of those who w ill continue. Perhaps the word theoretical should be emphasized, fo r the ir p ractical education is just beginning. T he ir lot is o f im m ediate self-support, as fa r as they are able. With conditions aa they are. it would be interesting to know how m any have secured employment w ith in six month« a fte r graduation.

W a r clouds loom in Europe, in A sia, and most of the w orld. Perhaps some of tonight's elect w ill lie called upon to again preserve the world fo r democracy, o r go to w ar under another slogan and a new batch of songs. They are probably in less danger than the youth o f other countries, and the possib ility is more remote.

The chances are against the class as a whole to amass ind ividual fortunes, but the chances are better that they m ay a tta in happiness. Money and happiness do not neces- sa rily go together, but jo y and contentm ent m ay be found anyw here and under any conditions. I f we had the power to grant any w ish o f the graduates, it would be our hope th a t happiness be the life-long blessing of the Class of June, 1938.

Th is evening, 130 Lyndhurst H igh School Seniors w ill enter th e ir Auditorium fo r the last tim e as high school students. Therein they w ill witness and act in one o f the most im portant ceremonies in th e ir young lives — H igh School G raduation. Sitting there, they are lik e ly to review th e ir own life— their victo ries, sorrows, Joys, disappointm ents — the wonderful four years now come to an end. They will hear through th e ir thoughts the voice of a classmate bravely «Jeliveiinjr a long, much worked-over speech. Soon they themselves will Won the ItSkfeTtt N H v e the coveted sheepaUn em blem atic of th e ir four year course of hard w ork in the halls of learning. A s the program draw s to a close, they may begin to wonder again— to wonder w hat Is in store fo r them— to dream o f great deeds they w ill perform — o f the great names they w ill make fo r them selves — o f great ideals they w ill follow . They w ill come out of the auditorium 130 strong but not as Seniors — not as high school students. They will come ready to act as the men and women they have dreamed o f being — to live the deeds and lives they have Idealized. And we — who soon w ill come to graduation day ourselves— w ish them the best o f success in a ll they may do — we who are now le ft w ithout our leaders may tx> sad as they depart, but w ith in are filled w ith w onderfully good wishes fo r the realization o f th e ir dreams and wishes.

PISH IN G FOR PRIZES New* from the S tate Chamber of Commerce th a t should

in te rest many local residents hinges around a fishing contest which s ta r ts today fo r the purpose of a ttrac tin g a ttention to the fine angling facilities available in New Jersey and Coastal W aters. To many th is will not be news. O thers may not go to Oshkosh o r Maine, or some d istan t places, when they find ju s t how good fish ing rea lly is in New Jersey, the garden state .

The period of th is fish ing contest is from June 15th. to October 1st. Aw ards consist o f $100 in cash and a silver cup. The cup aw ard w ill go to the w inner o f the contest, the cash aw ard will go to the hired o r paid boat captain, aboard the boat a t that tim e the prixe w inning fish is caught. No m ention is made by the ir excellencies, the men o f the Chamber, about who the prise is to go to, if the boat, the fish is caught from , is acanoe,— The w ater vehicle your observer uses when he deep sea fishes— so elp us.

The p riie w inning fish is to be m arlin , tuna, m ackeral shark or porbeagle shark, both these "gam e sharks,” known as members of the lamma nasus o r lamma cornubica specie« are found o ff the Je rsey coast a»' are m arlin and tuna. M ention o f that Lam m a cornubica species, sligh tly changed our m ind about competing fo r the prises, if it ’s a ll the same to the chamber. W e feel that if we hooked a fish and a fte r b ring ing him almost to g aff, discovered that what we hooked was a Lam m a cornubica species, we would th ink just flee tin g ly about what a hit, w inning those prizes would m ake W ith the g irl friend , before cu tting the line w ith great dispatch. W e'd take our chances w ith the g irlfrien d and if she's the type who would let a thing like a Lam m a cornubica species come between us, then it's better to ca ll it quits anyw ay.

The contest is open to a ll am ateurs from any state, but professional boat captains and members o f th e ir crew s are not deemed am ateurs.

The w inning boat is to sail from a N ew Je rsey in let or anchorage and return w ith in 2 4 hours a fte r hooking the w inn ing fish . The prizes fo r the w inning fish shall he aw arded fo r the heaviest fish per thread o f linen line used (no t exceeding 24 thread ) In the ratio o f not teas than 12 pounds o f fish to each thread o f line used.

The fish must be weighed on tested scales and certified not by photographs or your chum 's word fo r it, but by two members o f a recognized New Je rsey fish ing Club or by a state licensed weightm aster. E n try blanks may be had from the State Cham ber headquarters in N ew ark. N . J .

The w inning fish must be brought to g a ff w ithout handling o f the line or use o f a harpon, firearm or lance or by any means other th a if a g aff. They’ll be thousands competing and many w ill be the fisherm en who w ill relate just how they had the prize hooked, only to have th e ir tru sty rod snap rig h t above the handle and the denizen of the deep slow luy sink baek in to the mystery th a t 4a the sea.

L E T T E R T O T H E S P O R T S E D I T O R D ear Observer :

I was surprised to hear the other night that A1 Cantor» and ‘‘Champ” Fe rra ro trim m ed "C h ie f” Leuzzi and Tommy Perro tto . form er N utley High School a th letes in a golf aMUch a t Branch Brook Golf Club. “ Champ" has the m akings of a fine golfer and should go plaoee w ith a break o r two. The Y ountakah golftn* mem bers will verify the fact th a t the la n d h u rs t boy shoots a gam e th a t is not fa r from par.

Luzzi captured the New Je rsey State Caddy Maste r’ title one year and Tom m y was the “ dean" in his caddying days a t Yauntakah— or maybe old age is catch- in up with th e » boys.

I f “ Champ” Fe rra ro is the same one we have In m ind, we agree w ith the possib ility that he w ill go places w ith a few breaks. He does show plenty o f ab ility.

Yauntakah country club has bee i the starting o ff place fo r m any a golfer who has gained pr «minence

W e know s few profeA ional* who caddied a t Yauntakah a few years back.

So M arty Dolan has taken to the w ide open spaces? W e knew it would get him sboner or later. W e also have authentic reports that he Is p racticing up on his d riving . He intends to enter the d rivin g contest sponsored by Eddy Tolino down at the local range th is season. I f anyone remembers, M arty was entered in the contest last Ju ly tenth and he brought a new pet d rive r w ith which to walk o ff w ith the honors. It seems that when his back was turned, some low m ortal, borrowed the d rive r and h it a ball which won the contest. H orrors and consternation, was M arty angry

The Process of EvolutionProm the leading colleges and un iversities of the coun

t r y Lyndhu rst graduates and undergraduates are stream ing home. Tonight the high school w ill g ^ du ate more than 100 students. Satu rd ay night the elem entary schools w ill graduate more than 2 0 0 students.

Sap ient word upon sapient word has been poured into the ears o f the undergraduates and the graduates. The sea o f life w hich aw aits them has been described ripp le by wave and w ave by ripp le. The agonies o f unemployment and, too, the agonies of em ploym ent have been sketched, draw n and ■culptured.

B u t you m ay be sure that few o f the w ise words concerned one o f the most v ita l problems that must be faced. T h a t problem is c iv ic duty.

In these trouble-drenched times, the only b right and hopeful factor discernible is the numbers o f boys and g irls w ho are receiving educations. C ertain ly, the thousands and m illion s who come out of schools and colleges yearly soon m ust make the ir presences fe lt.

Governm ent by dem ocracy is a h ighly flexib le instru m ent. It can be bent m any ways. And it has been bent. U n fo rtu nately , few tim es has it been bent the rig h t way. T h a t is because dem ocracy too often is controlled by minor- VKCbl ’ “ •••-—'*«— — —

C y n i c s t o t h e con trary, it is our stubborn belief that the m a jo rity of Am ericans w ant to live honestly and w ant to be governed honestly. Bu t It is also our belief that m inorities organised fo r the purposes se lf gain and aggrandizem ent are in control o f our governm ent«, federal, state and m unicipal.

The hope fo r 'the fu tu re lies in education. Education m ust awaken the dorm ant c iv ic facu lties o f the students. |It m ust make every man w illin g and ready to stand up fo r h is rights.

W e think education does those things. W e feel that •ducation strive» to teach m ental asr w ell aa physical courage. W e feel that <wh*»tion leads the w ay to m ajo rity governm ent. The m ajo rity o f Bergen 's representatives voted as any Sonest. independent voter would have voted on the horse »acing b ills. Senator Van W ink le, M ayor Bogle and the rest fought o ff the b ills, although in the end they were unsuccessfu l.

In the fine w ork o f Senator Pow ell and Assem blym an Z in k in slashing the state appropriations by more than $2.- 000,000 M ayor Bogle, like the rest o f the Bergen delegates, w ere outstanding, g iving support to the Pow ell-Zink e ffo rts W hen pressure groups were applying a ll sorts of devices to •hepherd through some pet expenditures.

New Je rse y ’s current le g is la tu re did not cover itse lf W ith g lory. The influence of Harold H offm an s till was too evident to perm it the Republican forces, who should have been in control, to actually take control and o ffe r a uniform program . Many tim es it was im possible to d istinguish some o f the Hoffm an-prejudiced Republicans from the Dem ocrats. Good governm ent never derives from log-rolling. T hat is w h y the Leg islatu re which goes out of business in Trenton ton ight did a bettor job o f back-acratehing than o f modeling good laws.

In the face of tha t, how ever, it is goad to be able to sing the praise« o f Bergen’s representatives— Senator Van W in k le and Assemblymen Bogle, Freund, M cC lave, Osmers and M rs. Sm ith

M ayor Bogle w ill be back in the assem bly next year. M cC lave and Freund w ill return , also. Osm ers and M rs. Sm ith leave the assembly

A fine nucleous rem ains. Republicans who want a continuation of good work In T renton m ust chooae w ell fo r the tw o vacancies.
