The regional contest will be held at UNL East Campus in Lincoln on May 21. 4-H Council Scholarships Awarded Butler County 4-H Council has award- ed $250 scholarships to Lucas Cox, Rising Stars 4-H Club; Karli Shalon, Hilltoppers II; and Nyla Witzel, Plum Creek. The scholarship required active 4-H members to submit a written essay and a completed 4-H Career Portfolio. Sabra More, 4-H member and DCHS Speech student, facilitated the workshop which preceded the contest. Sabra also served as judge for the contest. Purple ribbon recipients in Prepared Speeches and Extemporaneous Speaking were Emily Dalton and Claire Renner. Meredith Dalton also took a purple in Extemporaneous Speaking. Meredith Dalton and Henry Renner received purple ribbons in Novice Speech and special ribbons for first time speakers.

Dalton & Renner Qualify for Regional Contest Emily Dalton and Claire Renner qualified for the

4-H Regional Speech Contest at the Butler County

4-H Contest on April 6 at the Butler County Court-

house. The regional contest will be held at UNL

East Campus in Lincoln on May 21.

4-H Council Scholarships Awarded Butler County 4-H Council has award-

Online Quality Assurance Help Livestock Quality Assurance is a self-directed course designed for youth ages 8-18. Participants will learn about good

production practices and producing quality food products from taking this course. $5 fee per individual taking the

course.

The course has been divided into three levels, Junior (4-H Youth Ages 8-10), Intermediate (4-H Youth Ages 11-14),

and Senior (4-H Youth Ages 15-18). Each year youth will be required to complete three modules within their age lev-

el. Youth are eligible to work ahead so that they will be done with

Quality Assurance requirements until they reach the next age level.

How to Register: ($5 fee per individual taking the course.)

Open your web browser to http://campus.extension.org

Click “Create an Account”.

Complete the online form and click the “Create My New Account” button

at the bottom of the page.

Check your email account for a confirmation email from eXtension Moo-

dle Help Desk. If you do not see a confirmation email within 2 hours

email [email protected] and ask for a manual confirmation.

Open the email and click on the link provided to confirm your account.

A web page will open indicating that “Your registration has been con-

firmed”, under the “Setting” block, click the “My Profile Settings” link,

select “Edit profile” from the additional options.

Scroll down to the “Optional” block. Even though there is no asterisk by

these fields on the website and it’s listed under the “Optional” block, you

are required to complete the fields marked with a star to make sure

that your work is reported to your county office.

In the ID number youth should type their county code. For example a

youth from Butler County should type in “BUT”

Click the “Update Profile” button at the bottom of your screen.

Click “Home” (upper left corner) to return to the main page.

Near the top of your screen, click the “CLICK HERE TO SEARCH” but-

ton.

Type “livestock quality assurance” in the Search courses text box and then click the “Go” button.

Click the “Livestock Quality Assurance” course link in the left hand column to enroll in the course.

Enrollment key: “Nebraska”

Click “Yes” to confirm your enrollment.

I’m Registered, how do I find the Livestock Quality Assurance Course again after today?:

1. Open a web browser and go to http://campus.extension.org

2. Login in the upper left hand corner with your login and password.

3. Within the “Navigation” block, you can click “My courses” to find all eXtension courses for which you are regis-

tered.

4. If you are registered for other classes as well, click the “Livestock Quality Assurance” link located under

“My Courses” at the bottom of the page.

I’m Registered, but I can’t remember my login or password:

1. In the “Login” block, click the “Lost password?” link. Complete the form.

2. If Step 1 did not resolve the issue, email [email protected] ask them to reset your password.

June 15 deadline!

Online Quality Assurance train-ing can be completed anytime before June 15. This is the same deadline for livestock ID’s (excluding market beef-April 15). The $5 (annual) fee for the training will be paid with a debit or credit card when en-tering the training module.

If you would like to use a com-puter at the Extension Office, please call to schedule a time. Bring your email address, password and debit or credit card for online fee.

All 4-H/FFA exhibitors in beef, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, rab-bits, poultry, and swine must complete this approved food animal Quality Assurance training program.

Tractor Safety Classes Offered Nebraska Extension Tractor Safety/Hazardous Occupations Courses will be offered at seven locations in Nebraska

during May and June. Any 14 or 15-year-old teen who plans to work on a farm other than his/her parents should

plan to attend.

Classes consist of two days of instruction plus homework assignments. Classes are from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day.

Dates and locations include:

-- May 27-28, Fairgrounds, Kearney

-- June 1-2, Fairgrounds, Valentine

-- June 5-6, Event Center, Lincoln

-- June 8-9, Farm and Ranch Museum, Gering

-- June 11-12, West Central Research

& Extension Center, North Platte

-- June 15-16, Fairgrounds, Wayne

-- June 17-18, College Park, Grand Island

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged at least one week before a location's start date to the Extension Office at the

course site. Cost is $60, which includes educational materials, testing, supplies, lunches and breaks. For more in-

District Horse Show Reminder

For those interested in showing at the June 10 (Bridgeport), June 11

(Valentine), June 15 (McCook), June 16 (Ord), June 17 (Wayne) or

June 18 (Seward) District Horse Shows, please remember the entry

forms and ID sheets are due on May 4 by noon to the But-

ler County Extension Office.

Forms can be picked up at the Butler County Extension Office or

online @ http://butler.unl.edu/butlercounty4h .

Remember, to show at a District 4-H Horse Show, you must be at

least 10 years old by January 1 of the current year and have passed

your Level II Horse test PRIOR to making an entry for the show.

State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben ID Requirements

Online livestock affidavits are required for all animals being identified for the Nebraska Sate Fair and Ak-Sar

-Ben for 2015. You will enter the information from your paper ID sheet

into the online database by June 15. 4-H and FFA exhibitors will enter

the form(s) via the web link:

http://livestockaffidavit.unl.edu/

Butler County Only ID Requirements

Exhibitors at Butler County Fair will use the paper forms as in past years.

All information on the identification papers must be complete and turned

in to the Extension Office by the dates below. FFA exhibitors must also

follow these deadlines in order to show at the Butler County Fair.

Deadlines

The following dates are deadlines for identifying animals to be shown at the Butler County Fair, the Nebras-

ka State Fair, and Ak-Sar-Ben. Failure to meet these deadlines will forfeit any and all chances of exhibiting

at shows outside of Butler County. Animals can only be identified in one county.

April 15 – ALL Market Beef (Market Steers and Heifers)

June 15 – All Livestock, including Sheep (Market and Breeding), Goats (Market and Breeding), Swine, Rab-

bits, Breeding Heifers, Bucket Calf, Feeder Calf

State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben- DNA samples are required to exhibit at State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. The dead-

lines for DNA samples to be taken are the same as the identification deadlines.

DNA for Market Beef – April 15

DNA for ALL other livestock (Feeder Calves, Sheep, Goats, Swine) – June 15

**Late animal I.D.s at the county level will be accepted. However, entries will be lowered one

complete ribbon color placing and will not be eligible for final championship drives.

4-H Fairy Garden Workshop Who: All 4-H’ers may attend!

Cost: $10.00 Learn about miniature fairy gardens! Learn how to care for and prune the

plants in your fairy garden! Design and plant your own! Enter them at the fair! (Note: Must be enrolled in a houseplant project to enter your garden project.)

Fairy gardens are eligible for the State Fair! Go online for ideas for containers and special accessories you can create. Bring them with you to the workshop.

You will need to bring: A container with an opening no larger
