Hackett will be participating in Reading Together, the yearly community-wide read sponsored by the Kalama-zoo Public Library. This year’s book is The Living Great Lakes: Searching for the Heart of the Inland Seas by Jerry Dennis.

The Living Great Lakes is the narrative of a six-week voy-age through the lakes and beyond as a crewmember on a tall-masted schooner, and a memoir of a lifetime spent on and near the lakes. Through storms and fog, on re-mote shores and city waterfronts, Jerry Dennis explores the five Great Lakes in all seasons and moods and dis-covers that they and their connecting waters -- including the Erie Canal, the Hudson River, and the East Coast

from New York to Maine -- offer a surprising and bounti-ful view of America. The result is a meditation on nature and our place in the world, a discussion and cautionary tale about the future of water resources, and a celebration of a place that is both fragile and robust, diverse, rich in history and wildlife, often misunderstood, and worthy of our attention. (Publisher’s Website)About the Author:In the nearly 30 years that Jerry Dennis has earned his living as a freelance writer, he has emerged as one of America’s most celebrated writers about nature and the outdoors. His essays in such publications as Audubon, Smithsonian, Orion, and the New York Times have won many awards and are frequently re-printed and anthologized. His eleven books, most recently The Windward Shore: A Winter on the Great Lakes, have appeared on national bestseller lists, have been translated into five languages, and are taught in many universities and high schools. (KPL Website)All members of the Hackett community are invited to participate in two reading discussions in the school media center. Wednesday, March 4, 2015 - 7:00 – 8:00 PMTuesday, March 24, 2015 – 2:35 - 3:15 PM

The author will be speaking at Kalamazoo Central Auditorium on March 3, 2015, at 7:00 PM. For more information on related activities, please consult the Ka-lamazoo Public Library’s website - www.kpl.gov.

Alternative Spring Break Our 10th Year

2015 Advanced

Placement Exams

The Advanced Placement (AP) Exams will be given at Hackett beginning Monday, May 4, and will continue through Thursday, May 14, 2015. AP Exams are required for all students who are currently enrolled in an AP course. Students with documented learning disabilities who have regularly used accommodations in school should contact Mrs. Ulbrich, ASAP, if they would like to apply for accommodations for AP Exams. Documentation must be up to date (within the last three years for either an ini-tial diagnosis or a reconfirmed diagnosis) and all past and current documentation must be on file in our office.

Junior College Visits

Now is a good time for juniors to plan vis-its to their prospective colleges. Hackett allows three absences for this purpose during their second semester; these are treated as school-related business. It‘s best to call ahead and schedule a meeting with the admissions office. While students are wise to start their college search on-line, visiting a college may be key when deciding if a particular school is the right fit for you. A typical visit includes a tour of campus, attending a class, speaking with an admissions officer, and meeting with an athletic coach. When choosing a college, you should consider: academic curriculum, admission policy, cost, opportunity for fi-nancial aid, location, size of enrollment, reputation in a specific field, and affiliation (such as private, public, religious, etc.).

FAFSA/College Financial Aid

Senior Parents: It is time to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for your senior. The form, which is the center of most grants, loans, scholarships and other need-based finan-

cial aid, is available on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov Students planning to at-tend college or postsecondary training during the 2015-2016 academic school year should complete the online FAFSA by March 1. You should also be aware of your individual college deadlines for financial aid, which may be earlier. Check with the Financial Aid Office at your particular college. All applications are processed online.

Scholarships

As scholarship opportunities are re-ceived, they are posted to the HCP Dai-ly Announcements, on Mondays only, by the Guidance Department. While a majority of these opportunities are di-rected toward seniors, we occasionally post scholarships which are available to underclassmen. Please be aware of scholarship scams. Do not pay any-thing to anyone to search for scholar-ships. Juniors and seniors: we have listed some of the more popular schol-arship web sites which are available to you in the Hackett College Planner that you were given at Junior Parent Night.

Seniors: All local Kalamazoo Communi-ty Foundation Scholarship applications may be found online. www.kalfound.org (Most of their deadlines are by March 31. Apply now!)

Testing is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at 8:00 A.M. Students should arrive at 7:40 A.M. and bring several #2 pencils as well as a calculator with extra batteries.

Sign–ups have already begun and will continue through February 27, 2015. The cost is $25.00 during this period. Students will need to sign-up in advance. Your student will be considered registered upon receipt of your check, made pay-able to Hackett Catholic Prep.

Sophomores and juniors: 2015-2016 Education for the Arts and Education for Employment applica-tions, are available in the Guidance Office. Instructions for Salute Submission• Select the salute size you wish to purchase; then, using the sample layouts, choose the design number within that size that you would like used for your student’s salute in the yearbook.

Photos:• Each salute contains a number of photos; supply enough pictures to fill the photo blocks in the salute you chose. If you include extra pictures, our staff will decide which one(s) to exclude without notifying you.• Decide which picture you want in which photo block in the design. A vertical photo block requires “up and down” images and horizontal photo blocks require “left to right” images.• At this time we are only accepting digital/scanned images. Upload photos at yearbookforever.com by entering your school name “Hackett,” click the “Community Upload” arrow at the top of the page and enter our school code “hcc” (case sensitive). You can also save your images to a disk or flash drive and deliver to the mail of-fice or Mrs. Mileski’s room.• Please DO NOT submit collages. They do not reproduce well and we cannot be responsible for the image quality problems that may arise.

Text:• The words you want to include in your salute are called “copy.” Please write (print) your copy legibly on the salute order form, or you may type or print it on a separate sheet and attach it to the order form or deliver with your payment and digital images at school.• We will choose a font/typeface for the copy when we design your ad. We will correct grammar, punctuation and spelling errors unless otherwise instructed.• Take into account the size of your ad when writing your message to your student. A large quantity of text in any ad will end up being set in small type which may not be easy to read.
