Saturday morning vehicle incidents On February 7th, Merritt RCMP re- sponded to several complaints to vehi- cles in the downtown core. Arson At 5:45am, RCMP assisted the fire de- partment at a call to a vehicle fire in the 1600 block of Coldwater Ave. The pickup truck had been entered and an accelerant used to light a fire inside the vehicle. The vehicle owner was awakened by noise to find flames in his vehicle, and was able to contact the fire department. Fire was extinguished with minimal damage to console of the vehicle. Police are requesting information from the public if anyone has any infor- mation regarding the arson. Smashed window A little later, at 8:30am, RCMP were advised of damage to a vehicle parked overnight on the 1900 block of Quilchena Avenue. The owner had been working a night shift and discovered that the rear window had been smashed in her vehi- cle sometime overnight. There were no witnesses to the incident. Dents & scratches At 11am the same morning, police were advised of damage to a vehicle parked on the 2200 block of Granite Av- enue. The vehicle was damaged while parked overnight at a residence. NVIT gets federal trades training funding Yesterday at NVIT, Okanagan-Coqui- halla MP Dan Albas, on behalf of the Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced over $1.75 million in funding to support training for skilled trades. The investment will be used to pur- chase a mobile trailer to deliver the Bridging to Trades program in Aborigi- nal communities across BC, and pur- chase related equipment and software used to equip both the trailer and the Merritt campus. With continued growth expected in skilled trades across western Canada, there is high demand for trades training programs. With this investment, NVIT will be able to train an additional 70-80 students annually, and expand program delivery to an additional 3 or 4 Aborigi- nal communities. Coq third on ‘BC’s deadliest hwys’ list The Coquihalla has placed 3rd on Global’s BC’s 12 deadliest highways list, with 32 fatal crashes between 2004 & 2013. The majority of fatal crashes on the Coquihalla happened on the southern half, with 13 fatal crashes between Mer- ritt and Kamloops and 4 crashes at the 5/5A interchange. The Coq has gained a measure of North America-wide infamy from the Highway Thru Hell TV show. But the problem with the Coq is not its design, but the fact it is a high moun- tain road, with extra dangers due to in- clement weather & steep embankments. Memorial service for Laura Washington A one-year memorial service will be held for Laura (Laura Suchell) at Shulus Community Hall, on Saturday, February 28, dinner served at high noon. Community Watercolour workshop Sunday, Mar. 1, the Courthouse Art Gallery will host a 1-day watercolour workshop in conjunction with Harold Al- lanson’s solo show.
