PRON YOUR PRESIDEWT

Por years sports oar enthusiasts have be»n griping about the poor coverage given aotor rac- ing by the daily papers. Por the aost pert the ooverage has be»a aketohy at beat snd all too often either non-existent or iuaoeurate. This hae even be»a true la syite of the efforts of a»ay Eay Lrea aotor sports reporters such as Gordon Martin snd Ed Dunkleasn. Unfortunately, it is the sports editor, not th» report»rag who dot»raine the-ooatent of the sports pages end who deteraine what aub)sets are to receive the greatest »aphasia.

This ourrent situsticm is aoat ayt1y ex- press»4 by Leon Man4el lu his editorial oon- tained in the Nareh 1968 issue of OLR LWD DRIVER. k nuaber of oojsaentsrles on this sub)»et have been written lately and we feel that now ie ~e tiae to second Mr. Mendel's aotion. Motor sport ls the. aeoond largest spectator syort in the country. La Lao»elated Press survey rate4 its newsworthiness right after pro basketball. The readers are there — let'a 1st the sports editor know this.

To quote the OLD e4ltorlal, "Write your paper and deaand lt. Iet those sports editors who »hooked off the little LP bose» snd ranked rang fifth . . . know there's soaeone out there who gives a dean. " Sit down BOW, not toaorrow, end 1st the Chronicle, Tribune, Mer- oury Revs, et al. hear from youl

Lnd speaking of OkR LWD DRIVER, this writer aust ooapliaent Messrs Mendel, Davis, Tata», Weith, and Jennings for their excellent snd thought-provoking ooaaentaries of the sport, en4 on oars in general. It is a real yleasure to see a aagaaine yrovide oontroveraial food for thought instead of aerely reporting events as the other aagasines oontinue to 4o. While «e don't always agree «1th soae of their pro- posals or arguaents, it'a a pleasure to see thea yiek up the soap box end take a stan4. Per- haps they ean stir enough people to action so the vole» of the oar «nthnsiast will at last be heard by those who control the diatiny of the aotor ve- hicle. - Dwight 1

TECHHICAL ARTICLE The following table shows the actual mileage covered when the odometer la4lcates 1 mlle.

Following are two articles taken from "Up Plxen der korsche". There are literally thousands of helyful hlats scattered throughout the 212 pages. Doa't forget that Golden Gate Region has 50 coyies for sale, at something near the friendly price.

TIRE SIEE AI. D SPEEDOYiETER ERROR by Hob Garretson

Golden Gate Region

E orsche speedometers are calibrated on thc basis of 800 revolutions of the front tire per mile. I have often won4ered where this figure was derive4, since none of the tires used on the Eorsohe have a rolling radius yielding this figure.

The tire that comes closest to 800 revolutions per mile is the 5. 90 x 15. This tire was standard on the Carreras. The 5. 90 z 15 makes 802 revolu- tions per mile.

The reason for iavestlgatlng this topic is the advantage claimed by the ralliest that the korsche is great for rallies because the speedome- ter is driven by the front wheel. This is an ad- vantage due to the fact that there is little slip- page between the wheel and the road, but the ad- vantage is lost in the odometer gearing.

The speedometer itself can be made to read correctly for any of thc Eorsche tires. The o4ometer, however, ls gear driven and cannot be altere4 ia the instrument itself.

Here is a chart of tire sises an4 the number of revolutions of the tire turns per mile:

TIRE SIX E RRV+ILE SPRRDO/VAL p DIPP

5. 60 x 15 815 800 1 ~ 9 5. 90 x 15 802 800 0. 25 155 z 380 825 800 3. 10 165 z 3' 856 800 7. 0

The following table shows the true spee4 the car ls traveliag when the spee4ometer indicates 60 mph.

TXRR SIZE THUR SPEED 5. 60 x. 15 58. 82 5. 90 x 15 59. 82 165 z 380 58. 19 155 x 380 56. 08

TIRE SIRE 5, 60 z 15 5 ~ 90 x15 165 z 380 155 x 380

TRUE SHRED 0. 9803 0. 9975 0-9696 0. 9346

VW speedometers use the same calibration fig- ure so you sec when they go 'by you oa the freeway at 80 mph they are really doing 78. 4706 mph.

TECH SESSIOR SURGERY

Here's a summary of the questloas aad answers by thc EOLC representatives at the 11th Porsche Parade.

Q What provision $s there for maintenance and re- yacklng of rear wheel bearlngs2

L There is no provision for repacking.

011 seems to leak from around thc valve cov- ers on my 911.

L Check to be sure that the covers arc not warped.

Q Ny 356SC loses power in tight coraers. L Check the float level when thc engine is hot

because there ls a possiblllty that the float level will change from the engine being cold to when it becomes hot. Llso, be sure the float docs not touch the carburetor housing.

Q What type of seal do you use in the Type 644 transmission to prevent loss of lubricant aroua4 the shift selector shaft2

L The housing may be worn. Also, there jsay be too much oil in the transmission. Om al- ternative is to use the same seal that is used on the Type 741 transmission. This will require machining the inside of the housing and installing a new seal.

Q Will the factory coatinue to stook replacement parts for the 35602

L We still stock parts for the 356 am4 356L. We will stock parts for at least 7 years~ as the law requires.

Q What is the average oil coneumptioa oa a 9112 L One quart pcr 400 miles to 14 quarts per 600

mlles depending on driving conditions.

Tech session Summary, cont'd

Why is oil consumption on my 912 greater than it wae in a 0 or SO, T Both the compressiom ratio an4 the upper limit

on revs has been imoreased, which will ne-. cessarily increase oil consumption. Wormal oil consumption ie one quart from 400 to 500 miles.

I have noticed what seems to be a slight o11 film'on the inside of the windows of my new 911, particularly after it has been sitting 1n the sun.

We have determine4 that this oily film co3ses from the upholstery. It is a problem pri- 5wrily in hot, sunny cl1mates. It will dis- appear eventually.

I seem to have ezcessive tire wear in the rear. Ezcessive camber on rear wheels w111 do it.

Risc, unbalanced tightening wheel bolts could also cause ezcessive tire wear.

Why doesn't factory»installed rubber, such as that used 1n grommets and mold1ngs, seem to stand up under American condition«2

Replacements will be made 1f the car is still under warranty. The faotory w1ll again be advised of these complaints of poor rubber quality. We have foun4 that there seems to be a higher degree of troubles in southern California because of the high concentration of smog and contaminants in the air.

The discs of my brakes seem to be scored. Scor1ng of discs is unusual and abnormal. It

coul4 be caused by rook particles b«1ng thrown up into the brake during travel over gravel roads. However, sooring marks will increase as the age of the car increases. also, there is always the possibility that a piston is stuck which could cause the brake pad to wear unevenly.

Will fuel in]ection be put on production cars of the 911 eeriest

We are working on fuel in]ection for produot1on car engines and gaining experience on this ln our oompet1tion cars. There 1« a possibility that fuel infection will appear on these 6- cylinder engines in the future.
