EMERGENCY

HOW YOU CAN SAVE YOUR PETS LIFE! The reality is if you have pets then at some point you may be faced with an emergency and a few simple precautions

along with simple first aid may help you as a pet owner and most importantly your pets. The first thing you want to

do is make sure you know the precautions you can take to avoid the following life threatening emergencies, the

second is how to make sure you are prepared so you can respond and give your pet the best chance of survival.

Remember all of the emergencies listed below need veterinary treatment to ensure your pet survives. As there is

quite a few emergencies that can develop with pet’s the following article will be in two parts and ran over two

newsletters.

Avoid spending Christmas in the vet’s waiting room

Remember with Christmas you should avoid feeding your pet anything that is not their routine diet. I know it’s

tempting to give your pet a small little Christmas treat like ham or turkey however fatty food will not agree with your

pet and can make them sick. Also with friends and relatives visiting instruct them not to feed the pets any scrapes or

tit bits that will also lead to over feeding and possible bloat. Generally the control of a dogs diet is inversely

proportional to the number of visitors you have so make it a rule!! Changes in diet will cause stomach upsets and to

much fatty food fed in a short period of time can cause pancreatitis and this can be quite serious.

TIS the season for foreign bodies

Pets love the Christmas trees for all the wrong reasons, they are fun things to play with and have lovely little bits and

pieces that can be played with and then swallowed with ease. If your pet swallows anything such as balls, string, toy,

etc you must take them to a vet as soon as possible. Do not try and make them vomit however it is often a good idea

to give some soft wet food for the object to bind to.

Insect Bites

Pets just like us can react to insect bites to varying degrees of severity. The influencing factors are the type of bite,

the location and the amount of exposure to the sting. Don’t be too complacent - many pets have died from allergic

reactions.

How to recognise - often you will hear or see your pet yelp and start biting or being bothered by a particular area.

Often pets will have been playing with a bee or ant and it bites them in the mouth or throat area. Bites around the

face or mouth area will often swell quite quickly and these are of particular concern as they may interfere with

breathing.

First Aid - often you can remove the sting; this is important to do to stop any further exposure to the sting and you

can simply flick it out with your nail. Take care not to squeeze any further toxins into the bite site. Stings are very

painful so we recommend cold compress directly on the site of the sting to help to reduce the pain and swelling. A

cool hose will also help. Remember pain can increase the body temperature and as these often happen on hot days

ensure your pet is cooled off all over if he is overheating. Ring your vet and organise to get them to the clinic asap as

they may need medication to help reduce the reaction and swelling especially any bites in the area of the mouth or

throat as swelling in the airways can be serious.

10

Bloat

How to recognise – Restlessness, non-productive attempts to vomit (repeated attempts to vomit may produce small

amounts of froth or foam but often no stomach contents), and a noticeable enlargement of the stomach area

common signs. Despite obvious discomfort many dogs will attempt to drink – this should not be allowed. This is an

emergency. Keep your pet calm and comfortable and get to your veterinarian immediately. The stomach may need to

be "decompressed" and emergency surgery may be necessary. There is no home care for bloat.

First Aid – This is an emergency the best thing you can do is get to your vet asap!! Refer to your earlier edition for

more in depth reading about this condition.

Bleeding

Pressure, pressure, pressure. If you notice that your pet is bleeding, depending on the location of the injury, gentle

pressure with a clean towel is generally helpful to stop the flow of blood. Elevating the area can also help decrease

blood flow. Wrap the area with a towel and tape and seek veterinary care immediately. If you notice even small

amounts of bleeding when there has been no trauma or injury to provoke it, or bruising in the absence of injury, seek

veterinary care as soon as possible.

Chemical Burns

How to recognise – pets who have either ingested chemicals or had skin contact will often vomit, and show signs of

distress. Often you will notice chemical residue on the pet.

First Aid – Remember to ensure you don’t also put yourself at risk by coming into contact with the chemical; ensure

you wear gloves and protective clothing. If you witness a chemical ingestion, immediately flush the mouth or area of

contact with large amounts of water. This can help reduce the amount of chemical ingestion and contact damage. Do

not induce vomiting. There is no home care – please see your veterinarian immediately. Always take the toxin

container or package to the veterinarian with you.

Burns

Burns are extremely painful; carefully apply cool water to stop additional burning (it is advised that you use water

from a tap that is room temperature). Do not use ice or ice packs or apply butter or any product to the burn. Do not

place clothing or covering of any kind on the burn other than cool water. Take to your vet for treatment.

Collapse

Generally, it is best to transport your pet to the nearest veterinarian immediately, rather than spend time on "life-

saving" measures. Inappropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), for example, may be ineffective and can also

cause internal organ damage if done improperly. Call your veterinarian and explain what has happened. If your dog

cannot rise, prepare to transport the collapsed animal immediately after speaking with the veterinary clinic. We

advise that you place your pet on a large blanket and stretcher them into the car.

USE CAUTION - Animals that collapse may be disoriented, confused, or aggressive during the collapse and during

recovery. Consequently, they may bite aimlessly and can injure even the people most familiar to them. Some dogs

that have collapsed often act normally within a few minutes. In such cases, a veterinary examination is still warranted

to find the cause and try to determine if future collapse is likely. If your pet appears completely recovered, try to

make some notes. Remember the events surrounding the collapse. Was there an obvious cause (e.g. choking on a ball

or toy)? Did it happen during normal activity or during vigorous exercise? How long did the collapse last? Was there a

loss of consciousness? How did your pet behave afterward? These pieces of information can help the veterinarian

tremendously

11

Heat Stroke

This is one that is heart breaking and all too often can be avoided. DO NOT leave your pet in a hot car. On hot days

ensure your pet has access to a shaded cool area with plenty of water. Do not take your pet for any vigorous exercise

on hot days. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. If your pet gets excessively overheated and is panting

excessively or collapses, he may be suffering from heat stroke. Check his temperature rectally. Normal body

temperature in dogs is 37.5 – 38.5 If your dog's temperature is over 39 degrees, call your veterinarian. Meanwhile,

place a cool, wet towel over your dog (must be changed regularly as may become ‘insulating’ thus causing your pet to

retain heat rather than lose it) or place him in a cool water bath, or spray him gently with a hose. In severe cases you

can use methylated spirits and apply to the inside of the legs to help draw heat from the body. Do not rely on these

methods alone to cool your pet – take him to the vet immediately as ‘manual’ cooling (I/V fluids, rectal cooling etc)

may be required. Continued high body temperature will result in permanent organ damage and death.

Seizures (as for collapse)

Seizures can occur at any age and for many different reasons. Epilepsy, brain illness, tumors, head trauma or even

toxin ingestion can cause seizure activity. It is important to get your pet to a clinic immediately as seizure activity will

overheat your pet and the longer this occurs the more severe the damage. Do not panic. Do not put your hand in

your dogs mouth – you may get bitten. Place your pet on a blanket and take to the vet immediately.

Fractured Bones

Dogs break (or fracture) bones for a lot of reasons. Often they break due to traffic accidents or incidents such as falls.

Fractures are typically classified as either “open” or “closed.” An open fracture occurs when the skin over the fracture

is open and the bone is exposed, while with closed fractures, the skin over the affected area remains intact.

First Aid – Were possible wrap thick cotton wool around the leg or area (if your dog is attempting to bite this may be

best left for the vet) and secure with vet wrap this will help support the area and make it more comfortable for travel.

IAlways remember that fractures are extremely painful and your pet may bite you when you attempt to move them.

In some cases you should muzzle your pet (can be done with a leash or bandage) and place on a thick blanket and lift

with as little pressure placed around the break to minimise pain and discomfort and take to your vet.

First Aid Kit

As we discussed earlier it is vital to ensure that whenever you have pets you are prepared for emergencies. This

preparation should also include always knowing what veterinary after hour services are available to you in your local

area and when travelling it is highly advised to think ahead and contact local vets in the area and have a contact in your

phone for a service that is available 24/7. Valuable time is wasted if in the middle of a situation you are trying to locate

a vet after hours and can’t find one. Below is a simple first aid kit that we advise every pet owner should have at home

and carry with them when taking the pet away. Remember often when people travel and go camping etc you can be a

lengthy time away from veterinary help so the following will help you in such a situation.

We have listed some items that you should contain in your first aid kit for your pet.

• Scissors

• Tweezers (flat slant tip instead of the rounded variety)

• Sterile needle (to remove splinters and tick heads)

• 10 syringes with no needle (for administering medications)

• Eyedropper

• Rubber gloves

• Rectal thermometer (normal body temperature of dogs and cats is 37.5 -38.5 degrees take your pet's

temperature under normal conditions to get a baseline for comparison in case he gets sick or injured)

• Towel/Blanket (at least 2) these can be used also as a stretcher

• Blanket (the compact thermal blanket works well; uses include keeping an injured animal from going into shock)

• Dog booties or little socks (to cover wounded paws or to protect so you won't need to treat)

• 3x3 sterile gauze pads

• Rolled gauze (for bandaging, stabilizing joints, making a muzzle)

• Adhesive first aid tape (in narrow and wide widths)

• Cotton roll

• Bandages (including self-clinging or vet wrap and waterproof types) for temporary bandaging (improperly

applied bandages can harm in the long term).

• Hot/cold pack

• Betadine solution (a type of antiseptic iodine medicine for wounds to deter infection)

• Rubbing alcohol (apply on skin as body cooling agent to aid heat stroke or fever; helps break down oils; acts as a

drying agent between toes and skin folds; but do not use on wounds as it can damage skin and is not an

appropriate antiseptic)

• Also have in your car:

• Bottled water

• Bowl or other container to use for water

• Spare leash

PRESIDENTS REPORT FOR THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF SA INC AGM NOVEMBER 2011

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the AGM of the Golden Retriever Club of South Australia’s AGM.

2011 has been a busy year for the club, but most importantly a milestone in the clubs history, our 40th

or Ruby Anniversary year.

This has been a significant event for our club in so many ways.

It is a wonderful achievement, to know that our breed has been represented, acknowledged, and successful for over 40 years in

this state. It is also an indication of a great depth of strength amongst the community this breed has created over the past 40

years. I am sure the founding members of the club would be extremely proud of the people who have nurtured and developed

the club over those years, and of all it has achieved in all of the disciplines our breed is involved in. With out doubt I am sure the

club has exceeded all of their expectations, and it is a testament to those who have been involved with the club during that time,

and they should be applauded.

In celebration of our 40th

year we decided to hold 2 Championship Shows with our 2 UK judges, Jim and Audrey Richardson. Due

to a clash of dates beyond our control it meant we had no choice but to hold them on a weekend with the Autumn International

Shows. This wasn’t something we were looking forward too as we felt it would take the shine off our shows, however on the

positive side it meant we had the opportunity to also have Mervyn Philpott judge, so our members had the opportunity to show

under 3 different breed specialists on the one weekend. I believe this is something that has never been attempted before in

Australia and it was a daunting prospect to organise.

In true form this committee and club attended to the task without a second thought once the decision was made to go ahead.

The shows although hampered by some unfortunate weather, pretty much ran like clock work, and I hope the committee and

those club members who volunteered their help at these shows are proud of what we managed to achieve. In the lead up to

these shows I was overseas as was our Vice President Barbara Moore, so the rest of the committee were left holding the baby

somewhat and I am indebted to them for all the hard work they put in in those final few weeks.

A committee is only as strong as its members and I would like to thank the committee for all of their contributions during the

year. Firstly to Jan Williams, and Karenne Wood. These 2 ladies are really the back bone of this club. Both of their jobs are

extremely demanding and take up far too many hours of their precious time. Jan thankyou for being my right hand woman, for

helping me through the year and preventing me from drowning, you have been a wonderful secretary to me and have always

completed everything in such a cheerful and happy manner. To Karenne thankyou, for doing pretty much everything, not just in

your role as Treasurer, but also as Show manager, BBQ liaison officer, website manager, and general dog’s body, your endless

energy for this club is truly appreciated. To the rest of the committee my sincere thanks for all of your contributions.

There are some non-committee who also must also be recognised for their wonderful contributions during the year. To Irene

Nichol, thank you for all your time and endless hours of public education to those wishing to have a Golden join their family.

Along with Irene also Heather Scholz whose amazing efforts together, raised so much money in our raffle this year. Heather and

Brian Scholz have also helped at almost every BBQ fundraiser we have had this year so thankyou both for your efforts. To our

retrieving fraternity Michael Mason and Graeme Allen, thank you for running and organising these events during the year.

Last but not least, to the Caring Canine Companions, and in particular Barbara Moore, and Anne Frederick. Thankyou for

continuing your work in this area, it is without doubt such an important community service and one that this club should be

extremely proud of. As many of you are aware this not only gives so much joy to the residents in aged care, but also to the

owners of these wonderful dogs, and to the dogs themselves. I am sure when this club was founded back in the 70’s they would

never have dreamed that this club would be the basis of something so great.

With all of this in mind, I would like to conclude by saying, that I believe this is the strongest club in Australia, with an incredible

group of people involved in it. This club will only continue in that manner if we can continue to have members serve on our

committee and help see it through the next 40 years. So please if you would like to join our committee please do so in what ever

manner you chose. We need help from all willing participants on every level. There have been times when the work has been left

to the few, and that is very hard and taxing for those people, and I would hate to see them leave because they become burnt out.

So young or old, new member or life member please join us in continuing to have the best club in Australia.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF SA Inc AGM NATIONAL BREED COUNCIL REPORT 2011

There has been more activity this year with the National Breed Council, and of course this was helped by the fact that we had a

National Championship Show. Unfortunately however Australia did seem to be experiencing nearly every rare natural occurrence

that was possible during that week, which severely hampered the ability for people to make their way to Queensland. However, I

don’t think it dampened people’s spirits at the show too much.

Those of us from Adelaide of course experienced the volcanic ash problem with plane flights being constantly cancelled, and those

travelling from Victoria and New South Wales, had extreme flooding causing road closures, resulting in an extra 8 hours travel for

some people. At the end of the day most people eventually made their way there, however for some like myself we actually

missed all of the first days judging, which was a great disappointment.

I did however arrive just in time to attend the National Breed Council meeting. All states were in favour unanimously of our

motion to defer the introduction of compulsory eye testing involving Limitations on litter registrations. Many of the other states

were completely unaware of the difficulties facing some of the smaller states and they were more than happy to support our

motion which was pleasing.

The National Show went off well, regardless of peoples delays and I believe the club was very pleased with the entry they received

from all over Australia and also the support from the Golden fraternity around the country.

On a negative note the approval of the extensions to the breed standards here in Australia were declined by the Golden Retriever

Club of the UK, a very disappointing result for all of us. There was an enormous amount of work done on these extensions, in

particular by Sandra Patterson the President of the National Breed council, so it was very disappointing to not receive the support

of the UK club.

The next national will be held in Melbourne in 2014, and the date will most likely be at the same time their Championship show is

held in October each year.

The AGM for the breed Council is scheduled for the 30th

November, so I have nothing to report unfortunately from that meeting

as yet.

Please remember that as a member you can make suggestions for inclusion of items for the agendas of any of the meetings, they

just need to be submitted through the state committee, so if you have any areas of concern or interest please feel free to submit

them to us for discussion.

I am sure the Breed Council will continue to be just as active in 2012 and we are very lucky to have Sandra Patterson and Claire

Kaspura running the National body in such an efficient manner for us.

SECRETARY’S REPORT 21 NOVEMBER 2011

First of all congratulations to everyone who has had successes in any way with their goldens, be it in the show ring, at obedience

or retrieving or in any other activities you have undertaken.

This year 2 golden's attained their Grand Champion Titles. Congratulations to David & Barbara Joseph on attaining this prestigious

award with Gr Ch Baradav Flying Solo and to Ruth Thompson and Gr Ch Chaleur Valentino.

The Club held two open shows this year in March and October. The October Open Show again being held at Grand Cru Estate

Winery at Mt Pleasant. There were very few entries for both of these shows. 10 entries for the March show and 20 entries for the

October show with only 10 dogs actually participating on the day. We were very disappointed with the low number of entries. It

does require quite a bit of planning and organisation to stage these events and we also need to get judges, and stewards to

attend. Thank you to the judges, stewards and the exhibitors who entered for their support of these events.

This year we decided to hold a Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs in conjunction with our October Open Show at Grand Cru

Winery. We were hoping that including all gundog breeds would encourage a good number of entries. However, only 3 dogs

participated. Thank you to Graeme Allen, Jessie Hughes and our judge, Lynne Webster for their support in organising and staging

this event.

The Club also held two Retrieving Trials on 25 and 26 June 2011. The Retrieving Trials were successful due to the hard work done

by Graeme Allen and his helpers. Thank you also to Margaret Bourn for her assistance with these events.

This year we decided to try something different to Fundays to cater for members wishing to gather together with their dogs for a

social outing. We held several beach walks and also some walks in Victoria Park with our dogs. At the last two outings we also

provided a barb-b-que lunch. Those who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. However, we would like to have had a lot

more people come and join in.

As 2011 was the Club’s 40th

Anniversary year we decided to hold two Championship Shows this year to celebrate this occasion.

We were pleased to welcome Audrey and Jim Richardson from Scotland to Adelaide in August to judge these shows, Thank you to

everyone who helped with the organising and running of the shows, especially those people not on committee who gave up their

time to help us. This year our championship shows were held at SACA Park in conjunction with the Dogs SA Winter International

Championship Shows.

We were unable to hold our usual Restricted Obedience Trial this year.

.

The Club held an all breeds eye clinic in July. This was conducted by Dr Tony Read and well attended. I would like to thank Mrs

Irene Nicholl for organising and running the eye clinic.

The Caring Canine Companions Community Visitors Scheme continues to bring great credit to the Club. Thank you to Anne

Frederick and Barbara Moore for all the time and effort they have put into administering Caring Canine Companions. Those of you

who visit one of the nursing homes with your dog will know how welcome these visits are.

Thank you to all of those people who have helped to keep our Club running during the year.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

21 NOVEMBER 2011

TREASURERS REPORT

President, Life Members, Fellow Committee Members, Ladies & Gentlemen,

Another 12 months have passed and another Treasurers Report to present to you this evening.

2011 has been a reasonably successful year for our Club financially; we have however made a loss of $2357.69, much

of which can be attributed to our double Championship Shows in August. This year we had the cost of 2 airfares

instead of the usual one and perhaps our entries didn’t really reflect this cost, however our club is still in a very good

financial position and can bear this loss. Although in saying this we should not become complacent and think that

fund raising is not necessary. If we as a club were to run a sausage sizzle every couple of weeks at various locations

around Adelaide we would be able to cover the cost of our judge’s airfares. So I urge you all to get behind this

venture and help out, it only means giving up a couple of hours on a Saturday, and will see our club funds grow rather

than diminish.

To those people who have helped at our various fund raising activities I say a very big thank you for your efforts.

We have during the last 12 months moved $20,000 from our ING Business Direct Account over to an ING Term Deposit

which is currently paying 6% interest; this matures in February/March 2012. Provided the funds are not required then

they will possibly be rolled over again for a further term, however this will be up to the incoming committee to decide

what should be done. Also we have a reasonable accumulation of funds in our Bank SA Express Saver and I am

intending to recommend to the committee that some of these funds be placed on short Term Deposit also.

Our Auditor, Mr. Tony Wren has once again completed the audit of our books and they have passed through the

audit. Tony has advised that he is again prepared to take on the role of Auditor for the ensuing 12 months, thank you

Tony.

If anyone has any queries in regard to the financial position of the club please feel free to ask.

Thank you

Karenne Wood

We would like to say a special thankyou to Ian and Michelle from Bakers Delight at Welland for their generous

donation of the bread for our Sausage Sizzles. If your in the area and are in need of some bread drop in and see

them.

Our Sausage Sizzles were a real success—but unfortunately only the same people volunteer each time. During 2012

we will continue with this venture and have even written to Bunnings to get a weekend there—when we know the

date we’ll be looking for you all to come down and assist us. Thanks to Heather & Brian Scholz, David Joseph, Lydia &

Ron Sernecki, Barbara Moore and myself for volunteering at the last 2. The club made a profit of $410.00 which is

fantastic. By holding these fund-raisers it means that we can just about pay for the airfare for our judge for 2013.

23

** Option 1 & 2 is based on the current tariff, therefore we would be happy to provided a revised quotation after May 2012.

According to a Gulliver’s representative, a couple of hotels in the Cirencester area are already booked out (possibly by the UK

Golden Retriever Club)

At this stage Gulliver’s are looking for expressions of interest, to see if there are enough people who would be interested in

receiving the benefits of travelling as a group. The options have been based on flying to the UK immediately before the Centenary

Show (and other events). Your return dates are flexible, but must be provided at the time of booking this tour. This allows you to

stay as long as you want after the show. Currently Malaysia Airlines are allowing passengers to return from any of their other

European Ports for an additional $200.00 per person. Therefore if you wish to return ex Paris, Rome or Istanbul etc that is fine.

However the group MUST all depart together on the same date.

If there are enough people interested in forming a group and if the group wishes to proceed, Gullivers would require a non

refundable deposit of $250 per person to secure the accommodation. They are unable to confirm the flights at this stage as the

seats will not be released until July 2012. Therefore Option 1 & 2 is based on the current group rates to provide the group with an

indication only of what the current prices are. Option 1 & 2 are subject to change therefore please use this as a guide only.

Departure taxes are not included with the flight options. Again departure taxes change every week with the rate of exchange

therefore currently taxes are approx $680.00 per person however as mentioned please use this as a guide only.

If you are seriously thinking of going then start talking to your friends about forming a group. If you do wish to travel

independently, then start looking for accommodation if you wish to be near to the venues. The indications from the UK are that

this will be quite a large and extremely popular event!!

The accommodation used by Gullivers is based on a good 25 room Country Inn and Hotel located five minutes from the centre of

Cirencester - good 3-3.5 star rating. At this stage coach transfers for the group when you are at Cirencester are not included as

Gullivers were not sure if the event organisers were providing coach transfers etc...If you require daily return coach transfers to

the dog show please advise and this will be add with the additional services.

If you are interested, please contact Melissa Cramp and mention the Golden Retriever Centenary. You can reach Melissa at
