Message from CILD

The Center for Innovative Leadership Development is Gardner-WebbUniversity’s catalyst for developing skills of local leaders with provenmethods that focus on transforming essential community functions andimproving the results and quality of life that communities enjoy.

The Center for Innovative Leadership Development links universityresources in creative efforts to impact the major human and social needsof specific communities and the region. An increasing number of localleaders whose skills are growing and being applied in their personal andcollective areas of responsibility will provide new leverage in transformingrelationships and practices, bridging the organizational silos that separatededicated personnel in their work to serve the public, unitingcommunities to address fundamental issues including racial, class andpower divides. New individual and collective leadership skills will increaselocal capacity necessary to make vital, measurable improvements that leadto spiritual, economic, and educational growth. Youth and young adultsplay a central role in shaping and implementing transformationalstrategies.

Earn 30 contact hours equivalent to 3 CEU’s. Must attend all threedays to receive credit.

The Center for Innovative Leadership Development announces the

inaugural yearly educational conference. In an effort to serve the needs of

public schools in North and South Carolina, the Center will offer three

days of events targeting three areas: interactive curriculum in the

classroom, the role of the assistant principal in building school culture,

and sustaining initiatives in organizations.

The speaker will be Dr. Larry Coble, nationally known for his workwith School Leadership Services. As Superintendent, Dr. Coble has ledschool systems with a wide variety of challenges, including small, medium,and large; rural, urban, and suburban; predominantly minority, affluent,and impoverished. He began his career in education as a teacher and hasalso served as an assistant principal and principal. Since 1994, he has beenDirector of the Collegium for the Advancement of Schools, Schooling,and Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and,from 1994 to 1997, was also a senior program associate for the Center forCreative Leadership. He is the author of Lessons Learned from Experience: APractical Developmental Source Book for Educational Leaders, co-authorwith Melody H. Clodfelter and Dale L. Brubaker of Strategies for YourImprovement: A Developmental Guide for Educational Leaders Utilizing360° Feedback, and co-author with Dale L. Brubaker of two books:Staying on Track: An Educational Leader’s Guide to Preventing Derailmentand Ensuring Personal and Organizational Success and The Hidden Leader:Leadership Lessons on the Potential Within.

Dr. June St. Clair Atkinson has served as the North Carolina StateSuperintendent of Public Instruction since August 2005 and re-elected in2008. Dr. Atkinson is the first woman elected to the post of StateSuperintendent. She oversees more than 1.4 million students in over 2,300public schools.

As State Superintendent, Dr. Atkinson heads the North CarolinaDepartment of Public Instruction, an agency which she served for nearly30 years as a chief consultant and director in the areas of businesseducation, career and technical education, and instructional services. Aformer business education teacher, Dr. Atkinson has been involved ininstruction and curriculum development throughout her career.Improving instructional quality and student learning, creatingenvironments that enable teachers' and students' success, and ensuringthat education is modern and relevant are key priorities for Dr. Atkinson.

The conference will provide opportunities to develop action plansbased on the material presented. In addition, Gardner-Webb Universitywill facilitate the awarding of renewal credit, if desired.
