ATLANTA — For oneweek only, April 26-May 1,Shrek the Musical is com-ing to the fabulous Fox The-atre as part of the 2010-11Broadway Across Americaseason. DreamWorks The-atricals and Neal Street Pro-ductions have created afamily theater productionthat thrills and excites chil-dren and adults alike.

“We are thrilled to sendShrek the Musical to the-atres across the country, andfor American families toexperience their favoriteogre and fairy tale creatureslive on stage,” said BillDamaschke, president ofDreamWorks Theatricals.

The production tells thestory of the beloved swamp-dwelling ogre who goes ona life-changing adventure toreclaim the deed to his land.On his journey, Shrek andhis famous sidekick Donkeybattle a wicked dragon, res-cue a feisty princess andlearn about true friendshipand love.

David F.M. Vaughn, amember of the originalBroadway company whoplays villain Lord Farquaadin the musical, said that por-traying his character to theaudience “is a ton of fun.Well, a half-ton of fun. Per-forming the entire show onmy knees (including danc-ing and singing) is hard, butthe character is so incredi-bly colorful and loony, andto play the villain is alwaysthe most rewarding. You can

get away with pretty muchanything.”

LAWRENCEVILLE —The Aurora Theatre willend its 15th season inMay with “Over the Riverand Through the Woods”and open its 16th seasonin August with “A ChorusLine.”

In “Over the River andThrough the Woods,” byTony Award-winner JoeDiPietro, Sunday dinner atthe Gianelli’s house is notto be missed. Nick is theonly grandson, so when heis offered a promotion thatwill take him to the Westcoast, the family goes intopanic mode and no amountof cooking can solve theproblem. In this heartfeltcomedy about growingold, one generation strug-gles to understand another.

The show runs May 12 toJune 5.

ATLANTA — FernbankMuseum of Natural Historyopened its expansive new chil-dren’s exhibition, FernbankNatureQuest, on March 19.

The nearly 7,000-square-footexhibition is one of the most sig-nificant additions to the museumsince the world’s largestdinosaurs moved into Fernbank’sGreat Hall in 2001.

The $8 million exhibition willoffer Fernbank’s youngest visi-tors a different kind of museumexperience, where children willbe engaged through more than100 interactive encounters asthey explore an immersive,nature-inspired environment

filled with live animals andhands-on learning, according to anews release.

Fernbank NatureQuest allowsvisitors ages 2 through 10 into aworld that belongs to the youngwith a working clubhouse builtamong the giant trees. Visitorscan climb up a tree and cross ele-vated rope bridges for an aerialview of the immense expeditionthat awaits.

Special interactive opportuni-ties exist in every nook and cran-ny. Highlights include “nightvision binoculars” that reveal thelandscapes and inhabitants in thetwilight hours; a realistic archae-ology dig with layered artifactsfor exploration; a traversablecave filled with fossils, geodes,echoes and speleothems; a magic

mirror that brings objects placedin front of it to life, including anacorn that grows into a tree and afossilized trilobite that suddenlystirs again after 500 millionyears; and a simulated river thatripples as you cross and scatterswith fish when you “splash.”

“When we set out to design anew children’s exhibition overfour years ago, our goal was tocreate an experience where visi-tors would be challenged,engaged and able to explore inways that cultivate curiosity —just like real scientists,” saidFernbank’s President and CEO,Susan Neugent. “This was ouropportunity to create a museumexperience like no other, wherechildren are part of the exhibi-tion, not just observers. The

sophisticated experiences inNatureQuest will inspire furtherinvestigation year after year.”

Inside the clubhouse, visitorscan find exploration cards thatoffer tips on how to explore,where to look and what to searchfor next, including suggestionsfor parents on how to investigateeach habitat, special scavengerhunts for deeper explorations and“ologist cards” that provide adirected investigation of the exhi-bition through the eyes of differ-ent scientists, such as an archae-ologist, geologist, a zoologist, amarine biologist and others.

As visitors set off on their jour-ney, they’ll be able to explore theclubhouse as well as six diverseecosystems: the ocean/estuary,swamp, pine flatwoods, forest,

waterfall/river and caves. Eachregion offers a reflection of whatcan be found in Georgia’secosystems while revealing thehabitats they provide for a varietyof animals.

“Fernbank NatureQuestspeaks to visitors in a way thatchildren’s exhibitions haven’ttypically done in the past,” saidCindy Sheehy, Fernbank’s Direc-tor of Family and Children’s Pro-gramming and a key member ofthe exhibition design team. “Theexhibition empowers children tolearn without directions by fea-turing activities that are open-ended with something to see,something to investigate orsomething to do literally every-where you go with no set path onhow to get there.”
