ARCHERY COMMITTEE NEWS & HUNTING REPORT

The Archery Pavilion has sustained major damage during the Holiday wind storms, the roofing and well as the rafters.

We are currently trying to assess the damage and get estimates on repair cost. In the mean time, the pavilion should not be used until repairs can be made.

One bull elk and one buck deer have been taken by archery hunters during the 2011 hunting seasons. Neither animal tested positive for CWD. The Hunting Privileges Letter has been signed by the company for the 2012 seasons.

The boundaries are different from 2010 due to hazardous propulsion operations and testing occurring this summer and fall. The following map shows the restricted areas and the current times they apply. If you have questions or concerns please contact your Archery committee or the SHFC Board.

The larger red circle is the exclusion zone in effect. The yellow shaded circle is off limits at all times until further notice.

* Only personnel who are SHFC members in good standing effective April 1 of the current year will be allowed to archery hunt the LMSSC property during the 2011 season.

* Anyone wanting to archery hunt the 2011 season must complete their 2011 work bond (any committee type) (Guests are exempt, but encouraged, from this requirement) prior to obtaining a 2011 permit.

* The definition of immediate family who may be a guest hunter includes spouse, child, grandchild, & parent of SHFC members.

* The following personnel are NOT included on the list given permission to archery hunt onLMSSC property as a guest or member * Brothers & Sisters, in laws, nephews, uncles, etc of SHFC members* SHFC members who work for either the government or a subcontractor.Other requirements include* Must attend the safety/security briefing & hold a permit issued by plant protection* Be in possession of a valid DOW hunting license* Possess an archery hunter education cardThe archery hunter education card will be required for all personnel prior to getting a hunt permit.

Good News for Archery Hunting on Lockheed Martin Property for 2012. My name is Tom Hanson, Senior Manager, Subcontract Management. Mitch Arnold has done a great job coordinating Archery hunting Privileges on LMSSC property for many years and he asked that I take over this task two years ago. I have taken the lead to make this happen with the help of Tony Miller and Matt Reetz. There are three of us to make sure that if someone has a question, someone will be around to answer those questions – phone numbers are on the Archery Hunting letter. There have been many changes in personnel in Human Resources along with Plant Protection and Emergency Services. These are the individuals who provide authorization for us to continue to Archery Hunt on the property. I contacted those individuals and set up meetings with each of them to discuss the importance of allowing the SHFC to continue to Archery Hunt on the property. We did not have any issues or violations during the 2011 season and I thank everyone for maintaining strict adherence to the rules for Archery Hunting on the property. Please read this year’s rules and regulations carefully so that we continue to ethically and safely hunt on LMSSC property. One very important regulation for this year relates to testing that will take place at D4. I have been notified that testing will take place during the year and that notification will be within 24 hours of testing and notification is provided to Plant Protection and Emergency Services only. There will be nothing set up to call SHFC or Ridge Riders Club for this testing. You will see on the maps enclosed with the Archery Hunting letter, that there are two areas that are identified. The smaller area around D4 (marked in yellow on a color map) is a MANDATORY STAY OUT AREA. For 2012, no one shall enter this area at any time. The larger area (marked in red) is the restricted area. This restricted area is similar to the keep out area last year, however this year, the restricted area is enforced only during testing. How will you know? Plant Protection and Emergency Services does not and will not have a schedule for this testing activity but will have 24 hours notice – DO NOT CONTACT Plant Protection and Emergency Services to ask if there will be testing the day you want to go out. During the archery hunting activities this season, the Guards at the Front Gate will be made aware of testing activities for the day and will identify to those signing in that will be hunting on LMSSC property that the area is RESTRICTED. If the hunting area is RESTRICTED, you may not enter the red boundary area during that day. If there is no restriction identified by the guard at the front gate when you sign in and you are within the restricted area, if you hear a siren going off, this indicates that testing is about to commence and all must immediately leave the restricted area – IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE AWARE OF THESE RULES AND REGULATIONS. Anyone violating this restricted space will be dealt with through Plant Protection and Emergency Services, SHFC and LMSSC Human Resources. One way we can help identify the areas for MANDATORY and RESTRICTED areas will be by setting up markings with either tape flags on trees or vegetation plus flags in open areas similar to those flags you see in peoples yards to mark sprinklers or electrical lines on your property. We will set out these flags in the late July early August time frame and work with Plan Protection and Emergency Services to agree to the boundaries. We will not mark the entire area based on being near buildings and difficult terrain. We plan to mark those areas to help all of us know where the MANDATORY and RESTRICTED areas are. We will mark north, north-north-west and north-north-east of D4 in an arc. If you see the flags, please leave them where they are placed. If you happen to see a flag down, please put it back in place. We need your support to make this work. I know that we are looking forward to this year’s Archery Season and I implore you all to do the right thing and continue to follow the rules and regulations set forth.

YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAMS

The SHFC Youth Program is beginning the process of contacting other clubs and ranges to set-up some fun, competition shooting for young people that will emphasize proper firearm handling, team and individual achievement goals, and foster participation in a competitive environment. Watch for a special club announcement for a late March meeting to bring yourselves and your kids to introduce them to the instructors and others interested in forming a league. Beginning shooters are encouraged to join and become a member of this activity. We planned on alternating Saturday’s and Sunday schedule to allow families that have plans one month to make a staggered schedule. We will plan our first Range shoot for Sunday April 1st, at 9am, and then the second shoot for Saturday, April 28th, at 9am. For more information on all youth shooting programs contact Paul Monce at 303-977-3823 or [email protected] or Gene Adamson at 303-971-1531, email, [email protected].

YOUTH SHOTGUN:

The shotgun program will consist of informal trap shooting, a trap league, and a couple of trips to a sporting clays range. We could also try some skeet shooting if there’s enough interest.

BOY SCOUT TROOP ACTIVITY:

SHFC will continue to host Boy Scout Troops that wish to work on merit badge requirements. These shoots are normally held on either Saturday or Sunday from 0900 - 1300. This event normally takes place at the 100yd Range or Shotgun Range, and is also a range restricted event. Request from troops will be worked on a first come first served basis. For more information contact Paul Monce at 303-977-3823 or email at [email protected]

SPRING PRACTICAL PISTOL MATCH – MARCH 18 TH

It’s that time of the year for practical pistol shooters to come out of hibernation and there’s no better way of marking this occasion than coming out to the range and participating in a match! So check your gears, ensure you have plenty of ammo, pistol cleaned and in good working order. We’ll be using both the 100 yard and pistol ranges so both areas will be reserved for this event. Please plan on bringing about 150 rounds for 4 stages. This event is open to all SHFC members and their guests. However, you must have prior experience in practical pistol events before you can participate. If you have no prior practical pistol experience or if it has been a while since you’ve done practical pistol, you have to go through a safety briefing/orientation even if you have a lot of shooting experience. If you are new to the sport and would like to participate, please contact me and we can schedule your safety orientation prior to this event. 8:00 AM – Stage set up9:00 AM – Shooter’s meeting followed immediately with match start If you would like to participate in the match, please contact me to let me know preferably on my home email address. This will allow me to record the names and get a head count to plan the match squadding accordingly. This will also provide me with the list of participants to contact in case we end up cancelling the match due to bad weather or range condition. I would encourage everyone to visit the SHFC website and read “Practical Pistol at SHFC” under Committees/Program /Practical Pistol. This will provide you with some information that you’ll find helpful whether you have experience in practical pistol or more importantly, if you are new to practical pistol. PRACTICAL PISTOL LADIES ONLY

Tom has retired and the baton has been passed. I will be running both Monday night events now. Starting on April 23rd and then every other Monday, 5-7 pm, we will be hosting the Practical Pistol Ladies Only activity. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. Only instructors get to talk to the Ladies, the other men have to remain silent and help with the brassing, target maintenance and score keeping. Same format as last year, bring your semi-auto pistol and 100 rounds of ammo. All shoes need to be closed toed and good flat bottomed shoes/boots are necessary, no sandals or other open toed shoes. Please wear a hat with a brim/bill and pants/shorts, not skirts. The spring and summer should be great since the winter has been so challenging. I hope to see you there. Call Dave Norris at 303-977-8068, or email at [email protected].

PRACTICAL PISTOL – LITE

Practical Pistol Lite is starting back up on April 16th, and goes every other Monday through September. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. Since April and May weather is so challenging, please dress in layers so you can stay warm just in case it gets cold. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Call Dave Norris at 303-977-8068, or email at [email protected].

3-GUN

Please note the date changes for the 3 Gun matches. We will concentrate on target transition and movement. 3-Gun matches are held once a month on Saturday mornings. Setup starts at 8:30 am with first shot at 9 am. Remaining match date for this season are: March 10th and April 14th. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? 3-Gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

LEVER ACTION SHOOTERS

Vito DeAngelis is gauging interest in a club sponsored match for lever action shooters. Some preliminary thoughts are a mix of targets both steel and paper, potentially in the March/April timeframe. The goal is to make this a SIMPLE, FUN, NO PRESSURE shoot that does not turn into an equipment race. Vito is looking for feedback while fleshing out a course and rules. If you have a 125 year old .45-70 that can hit the broad side of a barn, you’ll be competitive. For more details, contact Vito [email protected]

The annual trip to Granby to ice fish for lake trout is March 15th and 16th. Email for more details.

Boat trips will start in March. Email me to schedule a Tuesday night fishing trip to Chatfield. I am also starting to plan mountain trips starting in May.

The boats will also be available for rent throughout the season. If you need fishing guidance or have any questions about a particular lake email me. If you want to rent a boat ($10) email or call Bob Cohan ([email protected]).I also know multiple guides throughout the state for fly fishing or lure fishing. If you are thinking about hiring a guide for a day let me know and I will work out a discount. Many of the guides fill up summer spots early so plan ahead.

SMALL GAME HUNTING

A list of 20 or so small game hunters has been established to promote communication and trip reports on the subject. Email [email protected] to join the mailing list. Pheasant hunting has been good in Colorado this year north of I-70. Much of the hunting has been winding down but if anyone is still chasing geese let me know. Any photos of any sort of hunt would be appreciated.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION NEWS

Ridiculous ExtremesBy Richard Venola, Rounds Downrange column, Guns & Ammo, July 2011

Imagine standing up at the club when new business is addressed and hearing yourself suggesting, “I’d like to propose that we have a less safe range policy.” Older members might pass out.

But some places actually need it. Every shooter is a range safety officer, and for most of us, the habitual practice of safe shooting is as much a part of us as table manners or driving a car. On those truly rare occasions when a fellow shooter’s judgment lapses, a gentle word almost always suffices, and the harmony of the range is preserved.

Enter the Safety Nazi (Rangeregius absurdum). If you’ve been shooting long enough, you know the guy I’m referring to. This is the self-important blowhard who loves nothing more than hollering across three ranges for someone unpacking his range box to put on his safety glasses or he’ll be kicked off the range.

These types continuously push for the club to pass ever more restrictive range regs, usually with the type of fervor associated with religious crusades. I’ve found that these self-appointed confrontationalists are usually retired from some position of authority and seem to have a deep need to boss people around.

What is frustrating is that none of us wants to shoot on a careless range, especially a public one where you don’t know if the next bench is being warmed by a complete tyro or gang member. The most common refrain from the safety bully is, unassailably, “It’s for the good of the club. We can’t afford a lawsuit.”

The fact is that many shooting clubs fail because of internal politics. Basically, the club becomes so unpleasant that folks stop shooting there. Who wants to be bullied when you’re enjoying a morning with friends and the gentle scent of nitrocellulose is wafting on the breeze?

The most unpleasant range I’ve ever suffered is near Peoria, Illinois. A giant sign covers one wall of each of the ranges. It has about 20 rules, and at the bottom it sneeringly threatens: “If you don’t want to follow these rules, then leave. You are not welcome!”

I didn’t, so I did.

Page 16: gvtg.comgvtg.com/skyline/news12/0312.doc  · Web view & & . P.O. Box 621489. Littleton, CO 80162-1489. March 2012 Newsletter

SHFC March 2012 Newsletter

One senior club officer slides around the gravel each weekend, jumping out of his truck to yell at shooters about earplugs, etc. It was an unpleasant atmosphere.

By contrast, the Peoria Trap and Skeet club a few miles away doesn’t have giant, threatening warnings or overzealous, self-appointed enforcers. Amazingly, everyone enjoys safely shooting in the genial atmosphere.

Many safety fanatics mean well. They really do. And you can’t criticize their ostensible motivation. It’s the manner in which they go about it. They tend to forget they’re dealing with other sportsmen who, in many cases, have far more range and instructor time. The result? Bossy posturing often becomes more important than real safety.

The ranges at Gunsite Academy are among the most safely run in the world, yet one of the veteran instructors there lamented about his home range. He’d become the victim of a member who enforced ludicrous rules far in excess of the club regs. The cagey instructor found a copy of his club charter and now keeps it in his truck like a cross and garlic, hoping to be confronted by the oppressor.

Sadly, my old club range in California was afflicted with a member bent on fixing what wasn’t broken. He demanded to be placed in charge of all safety instruction for the five clubs who share the range. His restrictions are to the point of idiocy. Yep, the warning signs went up and closed-circuit TVs now monitor behavior. Hallelujah, Big Brother…

Is the range any safer? The old club’s been around since 1947—without a single injury due to negligent discharge. But this is probably due to the care taken in selecting new members who are true sportsmen and responsible shooters.

SPECIAL THANKS

The following note was sent to me even though I had very little to do with getting this fine young man out to the range for some trigger time. Thank you to those members that helped Nick, looks like your investment was worth it! A marksmanship ribbon out of boot is a good thing. This is one of the best things about this club - getting new shooters started in the sport.

Mike SullivanPP chair.

My thanks out to the club members who worked with my son, Nick, on learning to handle guns and practice shooting prior to his going to bootcamp. We went to his “graduation” this past weekend from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. It was a very impressive ceremony and quite moving. We are so proud of him. When we first met up with him, he had two ribbons on his uniform, one was for marksmanship with the 9mm handgun, which he had never even touched or seen before he worked with you. Earning that ribbon was a proud moment for him. Thanks for enabling him to be so successful.

DUCKS UNLIMITED

Hello Highlands Ranch area Ducks Unlimited Supporter We want to personally invite you to a special Ducks Unlimited committee gathering and DU presentation, Wednesday, March 14, 2012. There will be a brief discussion about what DU does and how easy it is to be involved in what we do. We’ll also have some hunting & calling tips by friend of the ducks, Josh Montague, of Stillwater Outfitters. Being part of DU is a great way to meet fellow sportsmen and sportswomen (i.e., find out where the best hunting and fishing is), and make a difference in the future of conservation and waterfowl hunting. We’re not asking for a big commitment, just show up and learn more about DU. After that, you can contribute whatever time and energy you feel appropriate. We welcome anyone who might like to learn more about DU – from putting on banquets to simply selling a couple tickets; all levels of support are appreciated. Here’s what you need to know:

Where: “On The Border Restaurant ”, 8555 S. Quebec St. Highlands Ranch Separate Covered Patio Area on the right as you enter.

When: Wednesday March 14th, 6:00pm DU presentation, and informal discussion. This will precede the normal chapter meeting which will begin at 7:00pm

Why: To get right to the point: we’re planning our annual banquet for May 3rd so there’s a lot of activity and it’s a great time to get involved locally.

Why Else: This is great way to secure & support your passion, meet great people who share your passion, and have a great deal of fun in the process. What’s required: Nothing really. Just show up, meet some people, learn about DU, and decide if you want to participate in the future. There’s no cost and no commitment required. At the very least, you’ll enjoy some complimentary beverages, pick up some conservation information and learn about DU. Just for attending, you’ll enjoy free raffle tickets and a free 1yr membership to Ducks Unlimited. Next Step(s):

RSVP if you can make it – just so that we can get an approximate head-count. If you can’t make it to this but still want to be involved, please contact me and we’ll include you on

future committee activities. BRING YOUR FRIENDS, and forward this email to any of your friends and colleagues who are passionate

about conservation and who you think might want to participate. SHARE YOUR PASSION and be part of a conservation legacy, I hope to see you there!
