(Continued from page 1)SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19. The homepage of the GVREC.org website has been temporarily dedicatedto reopening information and it is being updated frequently. Be sure to check it often as schedules for open facilities can change at any time, including schedule extensions that you might appreciate.

As the summer progresses, staff are turning their attention to club spaces and how to best off er access in a responsible manner. GVR staff have received countless suggestions from members about how to resume operations. The reopening plans are being developed by GVR’s multidisciplinary leader-ship staff in consultation with GVR supervisors, public health offi cials, other active adult recreation organiza-tions, attorneys, and, in some cases, GVR club pres-idents. In short, we have selected our experts and we’re sticking with them as long as things continue to go well.

Aside from suggestions on how to proceed, GVR staff have also received a great many questions. By far, the most popular question is “When will __________ (the asker’s favorite amenity) open?” The answer is, we will let you know. GVR intends to reopen every amenity in a modifi ed manner. Staff and members alike look forward to a day when new ways become routine. But we aren’t going to rush. Please see the answers to Frequently Asked Questions on page 4 for more on that subject.

A little help.A big difference. The assisted living services at Silver Springs Senior Living Community are about the whole family and the whole YOU. Of course, we can help you with your daily needs. But did you know you will also have options for fitness, socializing, healthy fine dining, and more? And services are tailored to you, so you’ll get just the right amount of help you need, when you request it.

But the best part? No matter if you need a little

help or a lot, you will be amazed by the difference.

Q: Why is this reopening going so slowly? A: We have been directed to take it slow…While Governor Ducey is permitting many of GVR’s facilities to reopen, he did not give the “all clear” sig-nal. He explicitly directed businesses to open CARE-FULLY, and to ensure that every feasible measure is taken to reduce the risk of COVID to staff and “cus-tomers” (members), and to ensure that members behave in ways that minimize the risk. He framed this as our patriotic duty because if an outbreak is traced to a pool or gym or meeting facility at GVR, it will have implications for all pools, gyms, or meeting facilities in the county or state. There is nothing preventing the county supervisors or governor from resuming lockdowns if they deem it necessary. Lockdowns are obviously very hard on the economy, locally and nationally. GVR agrees with Governor Ducey on this matter and we are taking our responsibility to the community seriously.

Green Valley has been fortunate to escape the higher infection rates of larger communities. It is likely that this fortune is the result of GVR and other gathering places shutting down in March. We do not want hasti-ness to cause a tragic reversal in this trend. B: Resources are limited…Pima County and the city of Tucson—entities with far more resources than GVR will ever enjoy—have not reopened their recreational facilities and haven’t even

published a projected date to do so. To abide by the Governor’s admonishment to ensure safety to the greatest degree possible, significant resources need to be applied to the problem.

Staffing is one of the resources GVR is short on right now. In order to provide the greatest level of safety possible, more GVR staff need to be in the facilities working with members than ever before. Our staff includes many people who are over age 60. Many have underlying health conditions or spouses with medi-cal concerns. This has forced some staff to make the difficult decision to resign rather than resume their service roles. Others are parents who have no school, daycare, or summer camp options for their children. Filling open positions has never been easy for GVR, given that most folks who live nearby are retired and we cannot offer adequate pay to lure younger people from Tucson. In a pandemic, this problem is more limiting than ever. In short, we need more staff than we had, and it’s harder than ever to find them.

Q: How is GVR selecting the facilities that are reopening?

A: Sites are being selected based on a number of factors. Among them might be:• Which facilities are available? Summertime is when

GVR shuts facilities down to complete essential maintenance. Access is always limited in the sum-mer as a result. (Cont’d on pg 5)

• Can we offer multiple amenities in one location to reduce demands on staffing (eg. a pool and tennis courts at the same center)?

• Can we provide a balance of access to northerly and southerly Green Valley residents?

• Do we have staff to adequately monitor use of the facilities?

• Has a club provided a thorough plan that ensures pandemic precautions will be observed? Is the club available to help GVR test and tweak the plan? Will they train club members to act as informal monitors?

Q: Why are some facilities available to clubs before the general membership?

A: For preliminary planning to resume club activ-ities, staff asked dedicated space clubs and a few sports clubs to submit proposals for reopening. Some clubs declined because they don’t yet feel it’s safe to resume their activity. Others submitted very thorough plans that inspired high confidence. In those cases, clubs and staff are working together to test out and tweak procedures. During that phase, the clubs might have exclusive access to the facility in ques-tion. GVR is grateful to these clubs and looks forward to continuing this level of collaborative planning as we continue to slowly reopen. Additional club activi-ties are being considered and staff will request details from club presidents as needed.

Q: Does GVR expect to be back to normal when the snowbirds return?

A: There’s no point in sugar-coating it. The answer is no. Experts agree that until an effective treatment or vaccine for COVID/SARS-CoV-2 is devel-oped, manufactured, and distributed or administered to a majority of the population, life as we knew it before this pandemic is unlikely to resume, especially in retirement communities. Social distancing, frequent sanitizing, and other precautions are a part of life for the foreseeable future. These requirements will have a significant impact on how GVR operates facilities that have been over-crowded for years. Furthermore, precautions do not eliminate risk. Staff will continue to fall ill with COVID, or be exposed to it and require quarantine, further affecting how we can operate. We hope to open in a modified fashion, every facility that can be reasonably offered, by the time the snowbirds return, but again, we will not make haste when the waste could be our friends and neighbors.

Q: Will GVR issue refunds for the closure period?

A: Under the Arizona Non-Profit Corporation Act, GVR’s Board of Directors is prohibited from refunding any portion of membership dues to GVR members. The Act states that a nonprofit corporation cannot use any of its funds to make monetary payments to members—including refunding dues payments.

BUT

When thunder or lightning occurs nearby, please followthe following procedures: • All GVR pools, spas, and pool decks close immediately• Exit the pool area at once (do not stop to shower

on the deck)• Do not wait for GVR staff to ask you to leave• If asked to leave by GVR staff , exit immediately• Pools will reopen 30 minutes after last lightning• To fi nd out if pools are closed, go togvrec.org, and

click the link in the upper left corner, or go to the GVR app on your smart phone and click “pool status.”

GVR follows guidelines provided by the National Light-ning Safety Institute (NLSI) to determine when to close pools and spas. Incorporated into the Corporate Policy Manual in August of 2014, the “lightning policy”states pools/spas should be evacuated when light-ning is no closer than fi ve miles away from any pool,

It’s Offi cially Monsoon Season in Arizona!Continued from Page 1

and activities suspended until 30 minutes after the last observed thunder or lightning. For consistency, all staff responsible for pool closure decisions consult the WeatherBug app to confi rm proximity of lightning activity. Pools may be closed while lightning is beyond the fi ve mile boundary if weather map data (wind con-ditions) indicates that it will arrive during staff meal periods, and may remain closed for slightly longer than 30 minutes after the last observed occurrence.

All GVR pools are closed when lightning is in the area (even if it is not right over an individual pool) because swimming pools and spas are connected to a much larger surface area via underground water pipes, gas lines, electric and telephone wiring etc. Light-ning strikes to the ground anywhere on this metallic network may induce shocks elsewhere – up to 30 miles away!

(Continued from page 1)are: “Caring for the Earth” and “Caring for People”. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. We make our lives easier, more resilient and more abundant when we do both. A great place to put this in action for immediate results is by learning to prune desert plants properly.

All around town, plants are sheared into unnaturalshapes: ding dongs, gumdrops and globes. Like sheep sheared of their wool, these shrubs look naked with little protection against our intense sun. So the plants do exactly as nature designed: they stop fl ower pro-duction and send out lots of new shoots to create shade for themselves. Then, the vicious cycle of prun-ing and excessive growth begins.

Next time your landscaper wants to shear your shrubs, consider allowing the plants to return to their natural shape instead. You’ll have a more resilient plant with lots of blooms for pollinators and shelter for birds (Caring for the Earth). And, you’ll make your landscaping easier, less expensive and more beautiful (Caring for People). After all, which of these Texas Rangers would you prefer?

To learn more about pruning desert shrubs, visitthe UofA Cooperative Extension website at:extension.arizona.edu/pubs and do a search for publication az1499. Charlene Westgate is a perma-culture landscape designer and owner of Westgate Garden Design.

West Center, Auditorium

*NOTE - This schedule is current as of 6/15/20.

For the most up-to-date schedule, visit gvrec.org.

With all of GVR’s facilities closed, now by order of Governor Ducey, members have been inquiring whether GVR is planning to refund a pro rata share of membership dues for the closure period.

The answer to that question is “no” - GVR’s Board of Directors is prohibited from refunding any portion of membership dues to GVR members. This is because GVR is governed by the Arizona Nonprofit Corporation Act which imposes certain restrictions on what non-profit corporations may do. One of those restrictions is that a nonprofit corporation cannot use any of its funds to make monetary payments to members - including refunding dues payments.

Is it Just a Mole, a Bump or Something Else?By FasTrac

Is it just a mole, a bump or something else? Should I be concerned and what is to be done?

Twenty percent of Americans will develop some sort of skin cancer by the time they are 70, which is particularly relevant to the folks here. Unfortunately, 7,000 deaths occur every year due to melanoma, usually the worst of the bunch. Because their appear-ance is cumulative from our younger days of picnics and outdoor activities, the risk of skin cancer increases with time.

There are 3 main types of skin cancer; basal cell (the most common), squamous cell and melanoma. If caught early the cancerous growth can be eliminated successfully with surgical removal. In those of highest risk, yearly skin “surveys” may identify precancerous lesions (AK or Actinic Keratosis) before they can be-come cancerous. These are often “frozen away” and don’t usually require biopsy.

Most often, skin cancer occurs on areas that have been sun-exposed now or in the past, such as the head and especially face, arms, hands, legs and feet. Melanoma can develop anywhere. Although skin can-cers cannot be reliably diagnosed by sight, some properties are highly suspicious such as an unusual

mole, lump, bump, skin discoloration, growth rate or texture change.

The only accurate diagnosis must come from sub-mitting a piece (or the entire lesion) to a patholo-gist for examination under a microscope with special techniques called a biopsy. Avoiding sun exposure, particularly between 10am-4pm, wearing sunscreen year-round (at least 30 SPF), clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a broad-brimmed hat will help reduce current damage. Having any new or suspicious lesions checked and potentially biopsied by a healthcare professional is prudent.

Here at FasTrac we perform skin biopsies includ-ing removing the entire lesion (excisional biopsy), if appropriate, to determine whether there is cancer and if so, what type. Some dermatologist offices also offer more complex “Mohs surgeries”. These are simply “nibbling away” at the lesion until the pa-thologist has confirmed it is gone. This is time con-suming and generally reserved for poorly delineat-ed, complex or large cosmetically significant lesions.

Green Valley and Sahuarita is Open for Business!By Randy Graf, President & CEO, Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center

No one could have imagined back in February what the country and our community would go through for the better part of three months. From arguably the most vibrant economy ever to a virtual standstill. Restaurants shifting to take-out only, office personnel learning to work from home, all major sports leagues shuttered, and unemployment hitting historic levels were unimaginable at the beginning of the year.

Unprecedented action by Washington D.C. was the reason the small business sector survived to the extent that it did. From the Paycheck Protection Pro-gram designed for businesses to survive to expanded unemployment benefits for out of work employees, trillions of dollars poured out of our nation’s capital to buoy the economy. How quickly we get back to normal is still anyone’s guess. Our restaurants are back to in-

house dining (at least partially), folks are being hired back and all the major sports leagues may be play-ing at the same time trying to salvage their seasons and fan bases. What our businesses need now is for their customers to eat, drink, shop, workout, pamper themselves, see their doctors and veterinarians, do tourism stuff, golf, swim, donate, landscape, invest, make home repairs, volunteer and anything else that will sustain them through the summer months.

The Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce has a member that can assist you with any of these activities! Look us up at: GreenValleySahuarita.com, call us at (520) 625-7575 or stop by and visit our office and visitor center at 275 W. Continental Road, Suite 123, Green Valley AZ 85622.

Don’t Ignore Heart Attack Symptoms, Even During COVID-19By BPT

It’s your heart. Don’t hesitate. If you’re experi-encing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, doctors urge you to not delay seeking treatment because of COVID-19 concerns.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors across the nation are reporting a sharp decline in patients coming to the hospital for heart attacks and strokes. These conditions don’t stop during a pandemic, and the decline has doctors worried that many people experiencing symptoms may not be seeking treat-ment, or that they are seeking treatment only after their condition has worsened. Delaying care could pose a significant threat to your health.

“Heart attacks and strokes required emergency care before the COVID-19 pandemic, and they continue to require emergency care now,” said Sean D. Pokorney, MD, MBA, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the divi-sion of cardiology at Duke University School of Medi-cine. “If you are experiencing symptoms, contact your doctor or call 911 now, as you may need immediate care to save your life.”

You may be having a heart attack if you have symptoms such as:

• chest pain

• difficulty breathing

• discomfort in chest, arms, back, neck, shoulder, jaw

You may be having a stroke if you are experiencing:

• numbness, weakness or loss of movement in your face, leg or arm, especially on one side

• loss of balance

• confusion, including trouble speaking or under-standing

Hospitals have safety measures in place to protect you. Patients may be understandably nervous about going to a hospital during COVID-19, but hospitals have implemented many safety measures to protect you from coronavirus. These facilities are ready now to safely care for you if you are experiencing serious health issues.

Facilities have implemented routine screening proce-dures to evaluate if any visitors entering the facility might have a risk of COVID-19 exposure, even before they step foot inside the building. Many facilities are separating COVID-19 patients into separate wards or buildings to ensure other patients are protected and not exposed. Routinely checking temperatures, masks and protective equipment for healthcare workers and other staff are some of the other measures that help to ensure a safe environment.

Waiting now can cause complications later - Bad news doesn’t get better with time. Delaying treatment for a heart attack or stroke can have serious consequences, causing a bad condition to worsen and making recov-ery more difficult. For some patients, postponing care can be the difference between life and death.

The recovery period after a heart attack may also require critical care. “A heart attack is a potential risk factor for sudden cardiac arrest, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating,” said Mary Newman, Executive Director of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. “If you’ve had a heart attack, your doctor can help to determine if you are at risk and can discuss treatment options to keep you safe. But they can only help if you follow up on your symptoms.”If you are having symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, getting care quickly is critical to your treatment and recovery. When you seek help immediately, the care you receive is more likely to be lifesaving, you can likely get better more quickly, and you can limit the damage to your heart and your overall health.

Acting Fast After a Snake Bite Could Save Your Pet

By Hannah Bigelow, DVM

Summer is here and with it, snake season! We all know snake bites are bad but what actually happens when a snake bites your pet? Snake venom contains different enzymes and proteins which affects the victim and aids the snake in digestion. Each enzyme plays a different role in creating tissue damage, bleeding disorders, clot-ting issues, cardiovascular shock and neurotoxicity.

After being bitten by a snake, there is an initial localized reaction causing muscle necrosis, pain and swelling that can potentially induce obstruction of airways and respi-ratory distress. Many components of venom are vaso-dilators which cause poor blood pressure. Leaky blood vessels result in fluid buildup at the site of bite. Different proteins breakdown blood cells and cause clotting issues. Venom does not directly affect kidneys, it causes the breakdown of muscle and blood cells. Excretion of these products in combination with poor blood pressure can result in kidney failure. Some components of venom are specific to certain types of snakes; i.e., mojave rattle-snake venom contains a neurotoxin that affects muscles needed for breathing, eliciting respiratory paralysis.

The best way to prevent snake bites is to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, particularly at dusk and dawn, and especially near low ground cover folliage where snakes like to hide and dogs tend to poke their noses. Rattlesnake avoidance training can be effective in teaching dogs to avoid snakes and even warn owners of their presence! If your pet is bitten, it is necessary to act fast with life saving treatment from a veterinarian, including antivenom, fluids, pain medication and anti- biotics; laser therapy can also aid in healing, reducing inflammation and fluid buildup. Animal Care Center always keeps antivenom on hand and is prepared to perform life saving treatment, when warranted.

Contruction of the Hoover Dam BeganJuly 7, 1930

On July 7, 1930, construction of the Hoover Dam began. Over the next five years, a total of 21,000 men would work ceaselessly to produce what would be the largest dam of its time, and one of the largest manmade structures in the world. Although the dam would take only five years to build, its construction was nearly 30 years in the making. Arthur Powell Davis, an engineer from the Bureau of Reclamation, originally had his vision for the Hoover Dam in 1902, and his engineering report on the topic became the guiding document when plans were finally made to begin the dam in 1922. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States and a committed conservationist, played a crucial role in making Davis’ vision a reality. As secretary of commerce in 1921, Hoover devoted himself to the erection of a high dam in Boulder Canyon. Today, the dam is the second highest in the country and the 18th highest in the world, and generates enough energy each year to serve over a million people.

Neil Armstrong Walked on the MoonJuly 20, 1969

The American effort to send astronauts to the moon originated in a famous appeal President John F. Kennedy made to a special joint session of Congress in 1961: “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.” In 1969, after years of work, testing and tragic setbacks, with most of the world watching, at 10:56pm EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, spoke these words to more than a billion people listening from 240,000 miles away: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He then planted his left foot on the gray, powdery surface, took a cautious step forward off the lunar landing module Eagle, and became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. Among the items left on the surface of the moon was a plaque that read: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot on the moon–July 1969 A.D–We came in peace for all mankind.”
