Primary optical area

In the primary optical are the main focus point are the name of the star, his name, his image, the title of the movie and the tagline. These have been put in this area because these aspects are the main reason you’d go to see the movie. They use star theory with Liam Neeson to draw the audience in and they know how important he is to the movie because the size of his name is almost the same size as the movie. They use the image also because if you weren’t aware of his name you could see him and recognize him and may look up the film/ actor. The title is in red to make it stand out from the rest of the shot

Terminal Optical area

The terminal area is used to convey all the information needed to the audience such as the release date. Used in red again to show it’s important. There is tombstones in the back of the show in that are to reinforce the genre of action- thriller and to relate to the title.

Axis of orientation

On the axis the only thing you really see is Liam Neeson because he is centred and he is the main reason the audience will go see this movie so they make him the main thing to be seen by the audience.

Strong fallow area

In the strong fallow are the title and the star are in this area as well just to kepp symmetry in the poster and to make it look aesthetically pleasing.

Weak fallow area

In the weak fallow area there is the gun to reinforce the genre further and to show that the character is able to use these guns effectively. Also quite a lot of the information overflows into the weak fallow area.

Genre Codes and Conventions

There are a couple things that are typical of action thrillers one of them being the actual actor himself, Liam Neeson very recently has become not just a convention of action thriller’s but a stereotype. Apart from that though in the weak fallow are we see a gun in his right hand which is obviously typical of action thrillers. There is also a graveyard in the background which symbolises death which is another convention of the action thriller genre.

Anchorage

The image of Liam Neeson anchors us because he is the only thing in the foreground and he is centred so he is the thing that draws our eyes in. Also because he addresses the audience by looking directly into the lens to give it a more personal feel. There is also a bit of depth of field used just so Liam Neeson’s character looks more focused which makes us focus on him.

Modes of Address

Liam Neeson’s character is looking directly into the lens to make the poster have a more personal feel to it because it makes it look like he is looking directly at the audience and addressing them.
