Born in Ankara, in 1984, he received his
Bachelor’s from Middle East Technical
University in 2006 with Honor Degree.
In 2009, he received his Master’s from
Delft University of Technology in the
Netherlands, where he was awarded
a full-scholarship from Royal Dutch/
Shell. He has worked in offices in the
Netherlands and Turkey, on projects of
diverse types and scales. Throughout this
time, he has been actively involved in
every stage of architectural projects from
sketch-design to detailing and finishings.

To produce space in a peculiar context where the architect could not operate by building or restoring,
‘implantation’ became a convenient and strong metaphor...
This story begins with the identification of a ‘potential’ in Centro Habana: A potential released by the weaknesses and the
inconsistencies of the built environment. Over-populated buildings of Centro Habana are falling apart as the chances for
regeneration fade out more and more everyday. However life is getting more vibrant in between the ruins of the city... A creative
potential emerges out of this tension between the society and the buildings. This is an experiment investigating the probability of
materializing this potential. Therefore it needed to be persistent in confronting the constraints of this stagnant context. By means
of this one could start thinking about producing space within space, places within places…
The outcome of this experiment was
a system of small-scale architectural
elements which generate
transformation on the urban-scale.
‘Implants’ are cocoon-like rooms,
formed in-between the Spanish
Colonial houses. ‘Nexus’ are series
of ramps and stairs that link the
implants to each other, to the streets
and to the courtyards. A new set of
spatial codes are developed in this
system via an analysis of the present
ones. Unlike their predecessors
these new codes are designed
to allow for possible necessity of
transformations in the future.

BamBoox is a generic system of prefab bamboo containers. Programmatic elements (rooms) are treated as independent spatial units
with modular attributes. This allows for the containers to be used singular or in a variety of multiple arrangements. Different sizes of
containers are prefabricated via simple techniques of weaving, hot-bending, and wire-lacing. The design is inspired by traditional cane
basketry. The woven surfaces improve structural integrity while featuring the peculiar tectonic qualities of bamboo as a raw material.

‘Walls’ are used as the principal design element in this project. They are intended to attract graffiti artists, skaters, dancers,
and other kinds of street performers. The functional and tectonic dynamics of the context helped the formation of a design
methodology that is unique for this case.

As a result, this public space generates strong relationships with its surroundings as well as introducing sharp contrasts. This
park connects the cultural and commercial activities in the environment, in a place where surprising experiences can easily occur
any time for the passersby.

Enveloping the retail spaces around a central common-area contributes to a more pleasant experience for the visitor.
Unlike the conventional concept of mall, here, the most of the space is left for daylight, air, and visual access. This would remind
one the traditional Turkish bazaar and the caravanserai, as well as the European arcade. The particular building codes on this
location asked for two separate buildings which were proposed to be connected with a public-deck and glass bridges. These
connections create a comforting experience as they provide visual access to the nearby young forest.

This map evolved through the effort of understanding the city’s complexity; its social structure, political mechanisms, and the
reciprocal influence between these spheres over the past. Achieving a layer of clarity in the representation of the collected
information was the main challenge. Typography was chosen as the notation tool to deal with the multifold nature of the
collected information. The result became more than just a superimposed mass of text: It is a ‘tool’ that helps revealing the
intangible realities of Havana.
