A district gazetteer is a compendium of informationpertaining to a district. Its raison d'efre is the focussing ofconcerted attention on various aspects pertaining to a districtso as to bring into prominence its distinctive featureshistorical genesis, cultural pattern, socio-economic aspectsand latent potentialities for its future. It is an importantreference book for administrators, general· readers andresearch workers.
An attempt has been made to portray the Gurgaondistrict in all its ramifications. The district as covered inthis volume was bifurcated on August 15, 1979 and the newdistrict of Faridabad was carved out of it. Since the presentvolume contains information up to March 31, 1977, it givesan integrated picture of the district before its bifurcation.
The Gazetteers Uuit has done a big job in bringingout this gazetteer. It is a matter of gratification thatDr. K.€. Khanna, M.A.,Ph.D (London), F.R. Hist. S.M.R:A.A.,was able to revise this volume before its publication. Thanks are due to the Chief MinWier and the RevenueMinister for their interest in this project.

to Government, Haryana,Revenue Department
This is the fourth gazetteer in the series of the revisedDistrict Gazetteers of Haryana, the first three being that ofRohtak (including Sonipat), Karnal (including KUfukshetra)and Bhiwani Districts. The gazetteer of the Gurgaon districtwas first published in 1884 and the last edition was out in1910.
The new gazetteer is not the mechanical reproductionof its prototype although the basic features have been retained.Besides, the pattern laid lown by the Government of India(Ministry of Education and Culture) has been adopted asfar as possible. With the passage of time, most of theinformation contained in the old district gazetteer becameobsolete. After the attainment of Independence in 1947,the changes in socio-economic sphere have been phjpomenal. As the Partition of the country had a marked effect on thisregion, a detailed section on 'Rehabilitation' has been addedto the chapter on 'People'. Lakhs of refugees had migratedfrom Pakistan. Their rehabilitation was a big challenge, butit was met with courage, determination and faith. 1hecreation of Haryana on November I, 1966, was an epoch-making event. Thc tempo of development and reconstructionwas accelerated This small State, during the short spanof a few years, has changed beyond recognition. The presentvolume describes the progress made and the changes thathave occurred in every sphere of life in the Gurgaon districtupto March, 1977. A few later significant changes alsohave been highlighted. A glossary of Indian words, a biblio-graphy of the more important words used or referred to inthe preparation of the gazetteer, an index, a few represen-tative. photographs and two district maps are added at theend of the volume.
In a way, most of the project has been cooperativeendeavour. The material was collected and licked into shapeby the State Gazetters Unit. A number of sections ofvarious draft chapters were sent to the Deputy Commissioner,District Officers and the Departmental Heads for theircomments and data authentication. Their suggestions wereincorporated. I am grateful to them all and their stafffor helpfUl cooperation. I wish to thank the Director, NorthWestern Circle, Survey of India; the Botanical Survey of
India; the Meteorological Survey of India; the GeologicalSurvey of India; the Indian Railways; the Posts, Telegraphsand Telephones authorities and all other official and non-oficial agencies who supplied the information that wasneeded.
I am full of apPreciation for the officers and staff ofthe State Gazetteers Unit for their hard work and zeal. Thesuccessful completion of the project is primarily due tounsparing efforts of Shri B. Raj Bajaj, formerly Editor inthe State Gazetteers Unit, and his emotional identificationwith the assignment. The three of the chapters, viz.History, People and Places of Interest, were exclusively pre-pared by him. Sarvshri S. P. Dheer, A .K. Jain, S.P. Kainthand R. K. Malhotra tackled miscellaneous assignments andefficiently handled work of technical nature. Their contri-bution has been quite meaningful and deserves appreciation. The gazetteer owes much to the valuable assistance renderedby Dr. K. C.Khanna. He took great pains in scrutinisingthe manuscript to the minutest details.
The Controller, Printing and Stationery, Haryana,.deserves my thanks for getting this volume printed according'to the specifications laid down by the Government of ~ndia.
