Webinar on What the Eyes Reveal About the Brain: Advances in Human Language Acquisition

On May 1, 2014 the Clerc Center presented a webinar: “What the Eyes Reveal About the Brain: Advances in Human Language Acquisition-Insights from Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) and the Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging (BL2)” With Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto from Gallaudet University’s Brain and Language Laboratory. In the webinar, Petitto shared breakthrough research related to the visual modality and what happens as she said, “the lion’s share of knowledge comes from the eyes.” She addressed the impact of that on brain structure and function and findings on how this applies to early language acquisition. This webinar was split in two parts: The first part was a pre-recorded tour of the Brain Lab with Petitto and her lab assistants while the second part was a live question-and-answer session with Petitto. Petitto is the science director and co-principal investigator of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, VL2. A Great Resource for Parents and Families The Clerc Center collaborated with the American Society for Deaf Children to provide Spanish and Mandarin translations to their publication, Sign Language use for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Babies: The Evidence Supports It. What was previously only available as full report is now a colorful publication ready to share with families in three languages. The Gallaudet University Regional Center-Midwest is one of the six Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURCs) in the United States that partners with Gallaudet University. Based in Washington, D.C. and chartered in 1864, Gallaudet University is recognized as the premier educator for the deaf community. The GURCs help bring the resources and expertise of Gallaudet University and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center to sites across the country through extension courses, training programs, workshops, conferences, enrichment programs, and technical assistance.

The GURC-Midwest serves Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Sheri Cook is the center’s director.
