Volume 8, Issue 1 April, 2015
Hello Gunter Mountain
Daughters!
What a wonderful week we have had for "Spring Break". The beauty of for-sythia, daffodils, and blooming trees is always breathtaking this time of year. Just at the time the new spring foliage comes with milder weather, we are preparing for the continua-tion of our chapter with the selection of new leadership for next year. My two years as your Regent have gone by so fast. It has truly been an honor to serve. I can't wait to see how I can help
the next administration continue to increase chap-ter membership and be successful in the future. I am so proud that our chap-ter has its first State Of-ficer, Tammy Clemons. She will serve the Alabama State Society as the First Vice Regent. Tammy has worked hard to achieve the honor of serving on the state executive board and I
am so proud of her.
Please join me on April 4 at 9:00 a.m. in the Michigan Center. We will have a short program on Ameri-canism presented by our committee chairman, Sher-ry Brown. It will be interest-ing to learn the history of some of our chapter ritual.
I hope to see you there!
Hugs, Susie

Jean Vaughan, Honorary State Regent, Alabama, presented the
program on Insignia at the March meeting sharing many aspects of
the official symbol of the DAR Organization to include correct
placement, historical facts, and when to wear your insignia pin.
When placing the insignia pin on a jacket, the top of the ribbon
must be placed on the left shoulder seam with the member’s high-
est ranking pin on top. Refer to the member’s website mem-
bers.dar.org for proper placement of other pins on the ribbon. The
official insignia was designed after a spinning wheel with 13 spokes
instead of 14. The number 13 is representative of the 13 colonies.
Active members can wear pins when attending an event in which
they are representing their DAR Chapter. Examples include a chapter member’s funeral and an
event in which their chapter is paticipating, such as a Veterans Program. The Gunter Mountain
Chapter is thankful for Mrs. Vaughan’s desire and efforts to see a DAR Chapter organize in
Grant, AL during her administration.

Chapter Office and Committee Reports
April 2015, Treasurers Report from Katie Buffington
The Gunter Mountain Chapter continues to raise money through their monthly door prize voices for the various chapter projects to include Adopt-a-Class and KDS special projects such as the Becker-Horton Hall Maintenance Fund. If you are unable to attend a meeting consider contacting one of our hostesses and
pledge your support for their door prize item. A special thank you is extended to the Gunter Mountain Chapter members for their continued support for all chapter projects. To date, all bills have been paid and the chapter remains in good financial standing.

Please continue to keep Gail Keller, Jean Mitchell, Alma Kingsbury’s grandson Kyle, and Jean Brewer’s daughter Jennifer in your thoughts and prayers. Keep Tereaca Sut-phin in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers from knee replacement surgery.
For those members who did not attend the March Meeting, a memorial service was conducted for member Lucy Whitaker who died on March 9, 2015 at the age
of 90. Please keep her daughters, Janie Poland, Vickie Smith, Annette Kelly, and her grand-daughter, Koren Olinger, and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
April 2015, Indian Minute from Chairman Amy Mitchell
Women of the Inuit tribe of Alaska had very different game foods to prepare including seals, walrus, and whales. Women were responsible for butchering, skinning and cooking any game the hunters of the tribe brought home. They were also responsible for making clothes from skins, and taking care of the sick and elderly of the tribe.
April 2015, Conservation Minute from Chairman Jean Jackson
Almost 90% of the energy used to wash clothes is used to heat the
water. To save money and energy, wash in warm or cold water using a
detergent formulated for cold water use. Just going from hot to warm
can save energy by 50% per load, and save you $63 a year. We will only con-
serve what we love, we will only love what we know, we will only know what we are taught.

Technology Tidbits
Otus is a innovative new mobile learning system for the iPad. This is an excellent free easy
to use tool that educators around the world are using to seamlessly integrate tech-
nology into their classroom. W/ the free iPad app educators can track assign-
ments, assess students, poll, browse the web, take attendance, and more. It is a
complete all-in-one solution for the mobile learning environment. Educators can even "flip"
a lesson for at home instructions. Also, the simple to use split-screen allows students to
take notes while working on assignments.

April 2015, Women’s Issues Minute from Chairman Sue Hart
This should be titled “Weather Issues”. Aren’t we all tired of the cold and experiencing some cabin fever? According to the gardening calendar we should be planting, pruning and dividing. Good luck with that.
We do need to remember to pay attention to the weather forecast and be pre-pared. Pay attention to skin care and stay hydrated. Dress ourselves (and our
children) appropriately
When the sun is shining go outside and soak up some rays (vitamin D). Look for those first signs of spring – before it snows or ices over again.
