WELCOMEIt is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome Gunnedah Red Devils Junior Rugby Club to New Zealand. It is the game of rugby that has brought us together and Total Rugby will ensure that you will experience the very best of New Zealand’s rugby culture. Welcome, Haere Mai, and enjoy your stay.

INTRODUCTORY NOTESWeather: April is autumn weather, which means it can be very changeable. Temperatures can fluctuate wildly, from high 20’s / low 30’s to almost single figures. However, the average should be about 16 degrees Celsius.

Grounds: Grounds will be in good condition without the winter rains. If weather is warm they could be very hard. Multi-studded boots should be adequate for backs (no guarantee), but are unlikely to provide adequate traction for tight forwards. Medium length studs recommended

Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is common practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This is meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish. Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and ‘front up’. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed at the end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition. Some clubs will perform a haka but it is less common than with school teams. It pays to ask before the game starts whether

Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand. The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.

Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in New Zealand age group rugby.

After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after match function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain. The after match is generally held at the host’s clubrooms or school. Speeches are made by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form of a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, player’s jersey, touring booklet, pins/badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served.

First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial first aid is generally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergency services are available for more serious injuries. The emergency number in New Zealand is 111. There are after-hours medical services available in all main centres. ACC (Accident Compensation Commission) covers most of the cost if it is an accident - there will be surcharge. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travel insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their own policies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directly with them. Ice should be part of your first aid kit.

Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for storing ice at matches.

Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make an early request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source a range of gear.

Laundry: Coin operated laundry facilities are available at your accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary. Breakfasts will all be at your accommodation and are continental (typically cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches are packed and are provided at your accommodation to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners at your accommodation are two course (main course and dessert)

Itinerary Times: All the times shown on this itinerary have been booked and confirmed with the accommodation providers and activity operators. For meal time changes please liaise directly with the hotel. If you wish to change timings for any activities or find you are running behind schedule please contact Total Rugby so that we can inform the operator

Security/valuables: This is your own responsibility. Valuables have been stolen before. Please never assume that it will be okay to leave valuables unattended or gear rooms unlocked. Every attempt will be made to assist you with your own security.

Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phone numbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your activities but we will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss the day’s events and go over the next day, or in the morning. There are other people who are also available to assist in most centres you will visit. They will either be the local Total Rugby Coordinator or someone appointed by Total Rugby.

Luggage: Due to coach luggage capacity it is requested that each person is limited to one suitcaseand one carry-on bag. If your luggage is going to exceed this please advise Total Rugby prior to your arrival.

Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your flight please complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with care and ensure rugby boots are clean prior to your departure.

On arrival you will be required to clear customs and immigration formalities. You will be met and welcomed by Total Rugby staff who will assist with your coach transfer

0830 A short walk to Hagley Park for this mornings 2 hour Total Rugby Training Session which will be conducted by 2 elite Canterbury level coaches. Session will commence at 9:00am and finish at 11:00am.

Tabai Matson Former Crusaders player, played 94 games for Canterbury and a former All Black and Fiji player. Has played at Brive, London Irish, Yamaha. Coached Yamaha, University of Queensland, Canterbury NPC 2009, 2010 , 2011, 2012 Assistant Coach (Won national title 4 years running) England Rugby Union Level 1 qualified. The only person to hold the highest qualification for both New Zealand and Australia. ARU level 3 , NZRU level 4 and IRB level 4 coach. Current Crusaders backs coach. 0730 This morning you will be joined for breakfast by two celebrity All Black/Crusaders player for breakfast. Learn about the life of a professional rugby player over breakfast, there will be an opportunity for photographs and autographs. Please pick up your packed lunch at breakfast Sam Whitelock One of 4 Whitelock brothers in the current Crusaders squad, Sam has been an integral part of the Crusaders since his debut in 2010. Standing 6”8’ he plays lock. Sam was part of the world championship winning team, the Baby All Blacks, at the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship. He impressed All Black selectors enough to make his debut for the national side in 2010, scoring two tries in his first match against Ireland. In 2011 he was selected for the All Blacks World Cup Squad and started every game, except for the first pool match. Luke Romano Luke is an old boy of Christchurch Boys High School where he made the schools 1st XI for cricket but only the 3rd XV for rugby. He played for Colts, Div 2 & then Div 1 for local club Old Boys. A builder by trade, Luke was a promising cricketer until he was overcome by injury and made the switch to rugby. His professional rugby career started with the Canterbury provincial team in 2009. 2012 was a breakthrough year for Luke, impressing for both the Crusaders and for the All Blacks in his debut season. 2013 is his third season for the Crusaders and he seems to be going from strength to strength as he gains in experience & confidence. 1000 CRUSADERS TRAINING Spend 60 minutes at Rugby Park, home of the Crusaders. This is the most successful rugby franchise in Super Rugby history. Watch the team go through its paces and gain an understanding of what it takes to be amongst the world’s elite player

1100 Depart Rugby Park, time for a short tour of Christchurch before returning to your accommodation for match preparation. During the tour you will see some of the damage caused by the series of earthquakes that hit Christchurch during 2010 and 2011.

1415 A short walk this afternoon to Christchurch Boys High School, venue for your first tour match. Total Rugby staff will provide directions.

1545 MATCH 1 Gunnedah Juniors Vs CBHS CBHS is second only to Auckland Grammar for the number of All Blacks produced. From the 2011 RWC Champions, Adam Thompson, Ben and Owen Franks, Dan Carter, Colin Slade and coach Steve Hansen were all Old Boys of the school. They have close to 500 players playing for the school each season. Their 1st XV was the winners of the Press Cup in 2012.

The match will be followed by an aftermatch function, family and supporters are invited to attend.

FRIDAY 19 APRIL CHRISTCHURCH/HANMER SPRINGS

0730 Breakfast at your accommodation this morning, please collect your packed lunches at breakfast. Then check out. 0900 Depart Christchurch City Park Motel, head north out of Christchurch through the vineyards and wineries of North Canterbury.

Stop just south of Hanmer Springs for a New Zealand jetboat experience. The jetboat was invented here in New Zealand by William Hamilton in 1954 and has opened up many otherwise inaccessible areas of New Zealand - unlike a conventional propeller the jet boat has an impeller above the water line enable it to travel through extremely shallow water (3” or 75mm).

Following the contours of the steep canyon walls where possible, elbows in as we pass within centimetres of rugged rocks and cliff faces. 0900 Depart your hotel by coach this morning, you will need to take your match gear with you. A visit to Te Papa National Museum of New Zealand is recommended. Admission is free, there is a charge (to be paid direct) for some of the activities within the museum. If time permits ride the Wellington Cable car from the centre of the city, there is a small charge for this, payable direct. From the top of the cable car ride there are great views over Wellington Harbour.

Late morning visit to New Zealand Rugby House. Level 4 100 Molesworth Street in Wellington. There is a range of rugby memorabilia on display. A member of the staff will show the group around and answer any questions.

1330 Arrive Scots College, time for match preparation prior to your final tour match. 1430 MATCH 3 Gunnedah Juniors Vs Scots College U14. Scots College is a world-class independent Presbyterian day and boarding school for boys Years 1-13. Scots is one of the more prestigious schools in Wellington and their sportsmen play with pride in the school colours.

The match will be followed by an aftermatch function. Supporters and family are invited to attend.

1700 Depart Scots College for Kingsgate Hotel.

1900 Final tour dinner at your hotel this evening.

WEDNESDAY 24 APRIL WELLINGTON/SYDNEY
