The Problem

• Certain parts of the government want to control who can have guns.

• People are using guns to commit murder. (mentally unstable, ex convicts, gangs)

More Problems!

• Lots of shootings are happening throughout the US.

• You don’t need a permit to get a long gun.

Guns Should Be Allowed.

• You have the right to bear arms (own a gun) as stated in the second amendment.

• Guns are used for protection and hunting.• We are taking care of it. The numbers of murders using

firearms from 2005-2010 has decreased by over 1.5k.

• The government is trying to stop the wrong weapon.• Most weapons used to commit crimes are handguns.• Banning large capacity magazines won’t matter because most

shooters have many extra mags.

Guns Should Be Banned!

• In 2010 over 6,000 people were killed by guns. • 6,000 by handguns, and over 350 using rifles.• Lots of murders involving guns are gang related.

Too Many People Dying

• Adam Lanza: Sandy Hook school shooter killed 20 children and six adults.

• Kyle Aaron Huff: Killed six people after a party and then committed suicide.

• Tyler Petersen used an AR-15 to kill 6 people at a homecoming party.

• James Holmes used a Smith and Wesson version of the AR-15 with a 100 round drum magazine.

• Assault Weapon ban of 1996- Expired in 2004.

History of Gun Laws

• National Firearms Act- In 1934 a law was passed that when buying a gun it has to be registered with the BATFE.

• Gun Control Act of ’68-After the assassination of JFK congress passed laws prohibiting felons from having firearms, and makes licenses required to trade guns.

• Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were also assassinated during the 60’s.

More Gun Laws.

• The Brady Law- Makes it required to have background checks for those buying firearms. (1993)

• Violent Crime Control Act-Increased fees and required photos and fingerprints to obtain a dealers license.
