Abstracts

Set in the Xenia, a poor city in Ohio. Portrays a vivid representation of American White Trash.

Although not well rated, gained a cult following and accolades for the portrayal of middle America.

Often divides viewers between ‘glowing reviews’ or ‘thunderous condemnations’.

Plot

Gummo features a non linear storyline following the doings of Solomon and Tummler in a small, poor, boring city that is yet to recover from a tornado in the 70’s.

Features numerous disturbing scenes and generally unpleasant surroundings.

Direction

The non-linear storyline is a metaphor for the hopelessness of the community, lifestyle and expectations of the film’s characters.

Gummo is visually bleak, raw and grimy stylistic watermarks of Harmony Korine.

Glaring vibrancy of 90’s fashion creates a stark and unnerving contrast to the negative essence of the film.

Jarring soundtrack picked for its uncomfortable nature.

Addendum

American born, I see Korine as more of an artist than just a film producer/director; writing lyrics with Björk, writing short films and screenplays from the early age of 19 focusing on hard to express subjects.

The directors father produced documentaries – this has had a strong influence on the film stylistically with many remarking that it pays out as realistically and as believable as a documentary.
