National Anthem Invitation Gujarati Samaj of Detroit would like to invite children (ages 5 to 12) who enjoy singing and are not too shy to be on stage to sing in a group National Anthem. Your children will definitely enjoy this opportunity, so please encourage them to participate. Please download the National Anthem from our www.GSOD.Org/Holi page so your kids can begin to practice. Valentine’s Dance Party!
Gujarati Samaj Youth (GSY) had their annual Valentine’s Dance Party on Friday, February 13th at Club In-ferno. We were fortunate to have mild temperatures with no snow. This year’s event was a great success with 45% more kids than last year. The entire GSY team did a wonderful job organizing this event and eve-ryone had a great time dancing the night away till 11pm. Security being our # 1 priority, we had 2 security guards to ensure the safety of all the kids who came to the party.
There were several raffle prices given away to lucky winners. There were 2 iPod Shuffles and 2 $25 gift cards. GSY would like to thank Chirag & Jigna Shah for the donating the 2 iPod Shuffles. Tummy-Yummy Recipe - CORN SEV PURI
Although every Mumbai visitor never misses eating sev puri, those who eaten the same thing over the years do grow weary of it. Here is a recipe, similar but yet, very very different from the traditional sev puri. Preparation Time : 5 mininutes. Serves 4.
To be mixed together into a corn topping
1 cup Green Giant Niblets Corn 1 cup chopped spring onions 2 green chillies, finely chopped 1 tomato, finely chopped 1 teaspoon chaat masala 2 teaspoons lemon juice salt to taste
Other ingredients
24 Baked Papadis 1/2 cup tomato chutney 1 cup sev or nylon sev 1/4 cup fresh pomegranate (daadam) 2 tablespoons chopped coriander
Method
1. Arrange the papadis on a serving plate. 2. Top each papadi with 1 teaspoon of the corn topping. 3. Put 1 teaspoon of the tamatar ki chutney on each pa-padi and garnish with the chopped coriander, sev and pomegranate. 4. Serve immediately.

Vivekanand For Children: The Game of Meditation
Swami Vivekanand’s real name was “Vireswar”, which was difficult to be used as a nick name when he was a child. So everybody in the house used to call him as “Biley”. Everyone is prone to play various games in child-hood, and Biley too had played many a game. At times, he would hang his body up-side down from a tree with his feet locked with one of the branches and remain gaily in that position. Often, with his companions, he used to play mimicking a king and his court. In this game Biley was sure to take the role of the king. Again, at times he would play the game of meditation, sitting erect in a meditative position with his eyes closed and hands placed on his lap. A slip of a boy resembling Lord Buddha! That is the right posture to meditate and pray to God with sin-gle minded devotion. Biley used to sit in that posture for quite a long time without moving a bit of opening his eyes. And was it only sitting quietly? His mind was also lost in meditation. He was then totally unaware of the outside world. Once Biley and his playmates were mim-icking meditation as a game. However, other mates could hardly keep their eyes closed as long as Biley could. So they opened their eyes at times to have a look around and closed again after a while.
Suddenly a cobra crept into the room. Having seen the dreaded snake, other mates fled in fear. They cried out from a distance outside, “O Biley, flee out.”
But Biley remained motionless with his eyes closed un-aware of the external world. He could not even hear the call of his friends. The snake however went away a little later without causing harm.
