GUINDON NEWSLETTER -2-

The purpose of La Société des Filles du roi et soldats du Carignan is to honor the memory of our courageous ancestors, the filles du roi (King's Daughters) and the soldiers of the Carignan-Salières Regiment of 17th century New France.

The King's Daughters (French: filles du roi; filles du roy) is a

term used to refer to the approximately 800 young French

women who immigrated to New France between 1663 and 1673

as part of a program sponsored by Louis XIV. The program was designed to boost Canada's

population both by encouraging male immigrants to settle there, and by promoting marriage,

family formation and the birth of children. While women and girls certainly emigrated to New

France both before and after this time period, they were not considered to be filles du roi, as the

term refers to women and girls who were actively recruited by the government and whose travel

to the colony was paid for by the king.[1]

They were also occasionally known as the King's

Wards, where "wards" meant those under the guardianship of another. MAISON SAINT-GABRIEL home to the Filles du Roi (the King’s daughters) http://www.maisonsaint-gabriel.qc.ca/en/index.html

It was at Maison Saint-Gabriel, on the shores of the majestic St. Lawrence River, in the house

bought in 1668, near the Pointe-à-Callière fort, that Marguerite Bourgeoys received the King’s

Wards.

Getting along as best they could in the

difficult world of a new colony, the

King’s daughter’s made their home on this

30-arpent farm. Their role was to adapt to

the rigors of the country, and to take a

husband.

OUR GUINDON CONNECTIONS to the filles du roi et soldats du Carignan Francoise Pilois and Andre Barsa daughter Catherine Barsa married Pierre Guindon 21 Nov 1706, Notre Dame Church, Montreal, Quebec.

1. Francoise Pilois m Andre Barsa dit Lafleur 2 Dec1669

*Andre Barsa dit Lafleur, is a member of the Carignan-Salières regiment, married a fille du roi (Using the PRDH records and the Red Drouin, Barsa is referenced as Barsa or the above.)

2. Elisabeth Hubert m Louis Bolduc 20 Aug 1668 in Quebec City *Louis Bolduc is a member of the Carignan-Salières regiment who married a fille du roi

3. Francoise Conflans m Charles Rancin 11 Oct 1667 in Quebec City, Quebec.a fille du roi

If you have any female ancestors who arrived in Canada between 1662 and 1673 and married in Canada they most likely were filles du roi. If you think you might have one or more ancestors that were in this group you can find a list of them on the web site of La Société des filles du roi et soldats du Carignan, Inc. www.fillesduroi.org The site is in English and also has information on the famous Carignan-Salièries regiment that came to Canada in 1665. If you are interested in joining the Society the membership information is also on the site. William (Bill) Kane a director of the Society also compiled a list of the soldiers of the Carignan Regiment who married filles de roi. This is the site of the Filles du Roi Index List http://www.fillesduroi.org/src/Filles_list.htm

GUINDON CONNECTIONS By Laverne Aitchison – editor lk.aitch “at” gmail.com

WE WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO MADE THE EFFORT TO BE A PART OF THIS SPECIAL EVENT: Without you, it wouldn’t have been a success!

The Guindon Reunion on July 27, 28, 29, 2012 in Westlock, Alberta was a great success with 80 relatives attending. We welcomed the Guindon families from Falher, Alberta who descend from Napoleon Guindon and Marie Claire Chartrand originally from Ripon, Quebec. Bonnie and Tim Flannery of Eureka, Montana also made the trip to share Bonnie’s family connection of Sophia Yandeau who married Joseph Fournier ”Fuller”. Sophia Yandeau is the sister to Leonard Yandeau. Leonard and Mary Ann Hoover’s descendants were the majority attending this

family reunion. These families originated in St Benoit, Deux Montagne, Quebec before settling in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. Some of the family moved on to Brasher Falls, New York. Others farmed in the Ottawa Valley. Our guest of honour, Pat Yandeau is the last of ten children born to Thomas Yandeau (son of Leonard Yandeau) and Elize Jourdain. Pat’s families contributed many Yandeau signatures in our guest register. (Pat turned 90 years young March 17, 2012) A big thank you to Jodi Willaims and her committee members who worked very hard for this special event. Laverne Aitchison, family genealogists since 1972, author of “Where

Have All the Yandeau’s Gone? And reunion recruiter presented the committee with a novelty flash drive:

“We must encourage family reunions. The family unit is the

basis of our society. A tree symbolizes our family tree and our

connection to our roots.”

The family tree at left was filled with leaves from the different

branches of the families who attended the reunion. Each person

filled in a leaf with their name, date of birth and place.

We acknowledged the fallen leaves at the base of the family tree.

Thank you to Katrina Nielsen, Jenny Williams and Jodi Williams

for their efforts to make this project a huge success.

Thomas Yohemas giving the traditional toast of his great, great, grandfather Thomas Yandeau:

Drink and be merry Drown a tear in each glass. Drink a health to each maiden And this charming fine lass. Drink and be merry All sorrows refrain. For we may and may never All meet here again.

We had a contest to see if anyone could find the original version of this poem. This is what Bonnie Flannery found from Spanish Ladies Shanties and Sea Songs: And let every man drink of a full glass And we’ll drink and be merry and drown melancholy Singing here’s a good health to each true hearted lass After doing some research when I started to put this newsletter together I found another version of “Tom Yandeau’s Toast” from this website: http://www.thebards.net/music/lyrics/Health_To_The_Company.shtml

Health to the Company Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain For we may and might never all meet here again

Here's a health to the company and one to my lass Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain For we may and might never all meet here again

Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well Her style and her beauty, sure none can excel There's a smile upon her countenance as she sits on my knee Sure there's no one in this wide world as happy as we

Our ship lies at harbor, she's ready to dock I hope she's safe landed without any shock If ever we should meet again by land or by sea I will always remember your kindness to me

We would like to acknowledge the time and efforts Mary Boychuk has donated over the past eight years as our membership officer and treasurer. Mary began her dedication in 2004 to these positions when she “volunteered” as our Chairperson for the 2005 Guindon/Yandeau Reunion in Edmonton, Alberta. It was well organized and well received. Mary has officially resigned and has passed her position onto Debra and Gail Fox. Now Mary will have more time to tend to her prize winning flower garden, (left) and her world travel. Debra and Gail Fox have always been a part of the planning, organization, distribution and proofing of the Guindon Newsletter.

A special thanks to all from the editor of the Guindon Newsletter, Laverne Aitchison.

Gordon Mulleneaux [email protected] Laverne This may be the record of Francois Guesdon of Vienne. The French is written in a manner which I cannot read with ease. The date vingt-cinq of March seems correct and some names seem okay.
