CANCELLATION, REFUND, AND PRIVACY POLICIESIf a program is oversubscribed when a student’s payment is received, the student will be notified and the full amount will be refunded or may be applied toward another course. If a class or workshop is canceled due to insufficient enrollment, students will be notified and full tuition will be refunded or may be applied toward another course. Students who withdraw from a class or workshop up to two weeks before the first class are eligible for a full refund. Up to one week before the first class, students who withdraw are eligible for a credit, less a $25 registration fee. After that, consideration can only be given with a written medical excuse, or in the case of other extraordinary circumstances. Credits may only be for classes going forward from the date excuse is received by Guilford Art Center.

Students missing a regularly scheduled class will not receive a refund or a makeup class.

Classes not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absence will be rescheduled, usually at the end of the semester. Call 203.453.5947 for weather cancellations, which will be announced on the main phone message line.

We are thrilled to announce our new fall semester of classes and workshops for adults and children. There are lots of options, both in-person and online,

so that everyone can stay creative this fall. Small-sized on-campus classes will meet to ensure proper social distancing. If you’re more comfortable

at home, there are many online offerings to study remotely.

• Students are strongly encouraged to register for classes online. Most of the GAC office staff are still working remotely; walk-in registration will not be available.

Please keep this code and password in a convenient place, as GAC staff are not always immediately available to re-provide this information in time for a class session.

Transform steel round, square and flat stock, as well as sheet metal, into your choice of bottle openers, hooks, bowls, cheese knives, spoons, skewers, steak turners, BBQ forks, spatula, ladle or small pan. FRONTIER KNIFE & HATCHET WORKSHOP

In this 5-day intensive, students will make a frontier style knife with a wood handle and then hot punch a hole through 1/4” round stock to forge a hatchet that will then be fit with a hickory handle. Students must be able to swing a sledge hammer. Fee payable with tuition $80.00.


INTRO TO THE HAND FORGED BLADE WORKSHOP

This weekend workshop will cover the basics of forging, grinding, heat treating, and sharp-ening of a small utility knife. The instructor will discuss fit and finish, overall knife design, how to sharpen and care for knives, and how to begin making knives on your own. Expect to forge several blades over the weekend, and get at least one to the point of a usable knife. Fee payable with tuition $45.00.

THE ART OF THE JAPANESE BLADE WORKSHOP

In this 5-day intensive students will learn to forge a traditional Japanese tanto blade. The blades will be ground and filed clean. Heat treat will be done with a clay coating to create the “Hamon” or hardening line separating the hard edge from the soft spine. Blades will then be polished and etched to reveal their true beauty. Fee payable with tuition $70.00.

glasses, leather work gloves, and should wear jeans, a non-flammable cotton shirt and/or jacket, and closed-toed boots or leather shoes. Welding gauntlets not needed. Our forge is a semi-enclosed,

The Bowie knife is one of America’s most famous knives steeped in history and legend. In this five day intensive, students will learn about forging, grinding, and heat treating this iconic blade. CalligraphyCALLIGRAPHY + KNOTWORK DESIGN: THE UNCIAL HAND

A variation of which was used in the famous Book of Kells, Uncial — often referred to as the Celtic script — is a majuscule script (written entirely in capital letters). It was commonly used by Latin and Greek scribes from the 4th to the 8th century AD. But you can use it to write your favorite Irish proverb or maybe even a bawdy limerick. Fee payable with tuition $22.00. This traditional calligraphy workshop may be taken as a stand-alone workshop or in conjunction with the Celtic Knotwork class.

CELTIC KNOTWORK DESIGN WORKSHOP

Constructed using a grid method, Celtic knots are complete loops without any beginning or end. Early on, these designs were used mainly for decorative purposes. Over time, people began interpreting them as the crossing of physical and spiritual paths, and as symbols for eternity and the endurance of life, love and faith. Celtic knots are also very popular designs for tattoos. Just sayin’. This is an ad-junct to the Uncial calligraphy workshop, but could be taken as a stand-alone class.

An introduction to various techniques in jewelry and metal-working with an emphasis on design, metal forming, and fabrication, basic stone setting, surface embellishment, and creative problem solving. STACKING RINGS WORKSHOP

In this workshop we will make several rings that will stack together. Each ring is different yet all go together. Using assorted wire, we will shape them into rings, solder them, and use hammers to create textures. We will add beads and other decorative elements to provide a variety of rings. Silver wire and sheet on hand for purchase. Estimated cost of materials will be from $10 to $30, depending on how much used.


ALL ABOUT STONE SETTING WORKSHOP

Covers basic bezel mounts from the simplest settings to more elaborate tube bezel set-tings, prong setting for round, oval, square, trillion, emerald-cut faceted stone and more. We will work mostly in silver, but also with some gold settings. Pros and cons of various gold alloys will be discussed. Students may bring their own stone settings projects to work on along with any stones, silver and gold they may have. Silver, gold, settings and stones can be purchased from the instructor. Together we will create a critter out of your hand made pom poms. Now you’ll know how to make pom poms of all sizes on your own. There will be lots of future possibilities. (Small hands will need an adult present to help).

AGES 8+AMAZING WAYS WITH COLORED PENCIL

Even if you have used colored pencils be-fore, you will certainly learn more, as at least one new technique will be taught each week. You’ll learn how to make gradations, multiple ways of color blending and practice cross-hatching to name a few. There will be opportunities to combine colored pencil with other types of drawing materials. Knowing how to use watercolor colored pencils will also be part of the course. Students will be assigned projects but are encouraged to create work inspired by their own interests and experiences.


CREATING A WORLD WITH CLAY

What do you like to surround yourself with? What are your interests? What would you like to invent? Where would you like to visit? There are so many different things in our world. In this class you’ll learn clay working skills as we sculpt and build objects reflecting the things we like. We will be using white self-hardening clay. After our pieces have dried thoroughly we will paint and seal them.

This workshop was conceived as an oppor-tunity for families to be creative together, welcome the holiday season together and enjoy family time in a relaxed and fun manner. Materials needed are not costly and some substitutions can be made. Make a cup of hot chocolate or cider and join us.
