The Improvisatory State of Mind in Performance Professor Robert Levin

Following last year’s memorable visit, Professor Robert Levin returns to Guildhall for his second annual visit as the International Chair of the Centre for Creative Performance & Classical Improvisation. His performances and lectures focus on the impact of improvisational concept on performing a range of styles within western art-music.

As a performer and Harvard University scholar, Robert Levin is one of the most influential living classical improvisers. His residency begins with a lecture-concert in Milton Court, followed by a series of public masterclasses with Guildhall School musicians (see page 28) and a second lecture with musical demonstrations.

Bringing together artists from the Guildhall School, Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin and the Juilliard School, New York, Drums and Guns is a devised piece which explores conflict in war and the impact it has on families left behind. Led by renowned pianist and Guildhall professor Iain Burnside, this fresh and engaging production commemorates both World War I and the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, and tours to New York following performances at the Guildhall School in March.

Guildhall musicians present some of Dutilleux’s intricate chamber music, including the wonderfully fluent string quartet Ainsi la nuit, considered by many to be one of the finest quartets of the

post-war period. The Sonatine for flute and piano takes a very French tradition into enigmatic new realms while the darker Les citations pays homage to a composer who died fighting in the Second World War. Part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Total Immersion series.

Guildhall Jazz Showcase Join students and professors as the Milton Court Studio Theatre is transformed into a jazz club for this two-day showcase. During the day, students showcase their work in small ensembles – expect a diverse range of music covering the history and stylistic breadth of jazz as it stands in the 21st century. The evenings bring performances from celebrated artists Bobo Stenson and Martin Speake, and Iain Ballamy’s Anorak quartet.

The Gold Medal

The Guildhall School’s most prestigious prize for musicians. This year is the turn of the instrumentalists, who will perform a concerto with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra conducted by Adrian Leaper. The Gold Medal was founded and endowed by Sir Dixon Kimber in 1915. Since 1950 it has been open to singers and instrumentalists in alternate years. Previous winners include William Primrose (1922), Jacqueline du Pré (1960), Tasmin Little (1986) and Bryn Terfel (1989).

4.48 Psychosis was the astonishing final work of the radical British playwright Sarah Kane. Detailing the experience of clinical depression, the play harrowingly reveals, through poetry, anger and dark humour, an individual’s struggle to come to terms with their own psychosis, the numbers in the title referring to the time in the early morning when clarity and bleak despair strike together.

Philip Venables, the Guildhall School and Royal Opera’s first Doctoral Composer-in-Residence, is a British composer with a strong musical language and visceral sense of theatre. In his new operatic adaptation of Kane’s play, directed by Ted Huffman, the search for love and happiness and the struggle for identity are explored through a fusion of opera with spoken and visual text. Presented at the Lyric Hammersmith, this is a production that promises to bring a new resonance to the last creative utterances of one of the most courageous young British writers of her generation.

An evening of delightfully surreal French opera from Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu .

Ariane (1958) is a short opera based on the myth of Theseus, Ariadne and the Minotaur, which reflects Martinu ’s great admiration for the celebrity singer Maria Callas in the virtuosic style of its title role. Set in Paris, the earlier Alexandre bis (1937) was written when the city was at the centre of Surrealism, a movement that considerably influenced the composer and is reflected in the opera’s curious subtitle, ‘The Tragedy of a Man who Had His Beard Cut’. Technical Theatre Arts Graduate Exhibition 2016

This end-of-year showcase presents some of the outstanding work of final year students on the Guildhall School’s Technical Theatre Arts programme.

It’s a chance to see up close a range of props, scenery, costumes, light and projection displays created for the School’s public operas, dramas and musicals, as well as for students’ own personal projects, and many of the students will be present to talk about their work.

Aboard a luxury locomotive travelling from Chicago to New York, a down-on-his-luck theatre producer attempts to rekindle his romance with a glamorous Hollywood starlet and lure her back to Broadway to save himself from bankruptcy. Based on the classic Howard Hawks film of the same name, this madcap 1930s-era screwball comedy catapults full steam ahead with fun and farce in the first-class carriages.

Performed by singers and repetiteurs from the first year of the Guildhall Opera

Course, this term’s Scenes feature three exciting new works written by composers and librettists on the School’s MA in Opera Making & Writing programme. This innovative programme delivered in association with the Royal Opera House enables writers and composers to write specifically for the singers, and to develop the pieces with them. The new operas will be performed with a small orchestral ensemble, and will be linked by scenes from existing opera repertoire performed with piano accompaniment.

Curious Curious is an annual celebration of the experimental, multi-artform work by current students and graduates of the Guildhall Masters in Leadership programme and design students from Central Saint Martins, working alongside professional guest artists. This year, students from the School’s new BA in Performance & Creative Enterprise programme also take part.

Curated by Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning, performances include live music and visuals from a variety of artists, as well as panel discussions and open workshops.

Dan-Iulian Drutac, winner of the Lutine Prize 2015, performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, full of natural lyricism and one of the composer’s most challenging works for a violinist. The programme is completed with Holst’s ever-popular The Planets and Vaughan Williams’ atmospheric and haunting Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1, based on folk songs.

Transformational feedback for artistsFindings from Professor Helena Gaunt’s Higher Education Academy-funded research into the focused development of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process and formal coaching skills at the School. The presentation, to include overview evaluation and individual case studies, will be followed by a panel discussion exploring wider implications, application and potential impact of this work in the performing arts and higher education.

New opera-makersHead of Composition Professor Julian Philips and Writer in Residence Stephen Plaice will be joined by composers Mo Fan and Li Ruixiang from Shanghai Opera House in an exploration of contemporary opera. The discussion, chaired by Principal Professor Barry Ife, will preview The Merchant’s Tale (Philips and Plaice) and The Wager (Wen Deqing), both due to be performed in London next year.

Orchestral composition in Britain today Guildhall composers Professor Julian Anderson, Dr Paul Newland and Matthew Kaner give accounts of recent works written for the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony and the BBC Scottish Orchestras. From their different experiences during these recent collaborations emerges a more general picture of the changing relations of UK orchestras with the living composer, as well as some hints about what the future might hold.

Explorations in Creative Learning Tutors and students from the Masters in Leadership programme present collaborative practical research projects across art forms. Topics include contemporary audio-visual interpretation of pre-Colombian artefacts; new collaborations between a Middle Eastern musician and UK electronic musicians; participatory composition and architecture; the spoken word, identity and ‘maleness’. Detta Danford and Natasha Zielanski’s research investigates the varied definitions of, and approaches to, collaboration and composition across the School.

What and how we teach at conservatoire Traditions and specialisation vs creativity for the conservatoire instrumentalist: Ian Clarke’s first-study Player Development through Creativity on the Instrument pilot explores methods of re-balancing the opposition through integration. Kate Paterson and Carlos Lopez-Real’s project seeks new ways of encouraging collaborative rapport between conservatoire teachers, using video footage of one-to-one lessons to prompt reflection and dialogue about teaching practice.

Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet re-heard Head of Historical Performance Jane Booth joins colleagues including Germán Clavijo and Pierre Doumenge in an exploration of this late masterpiece curated by Professor Jacqueline Ross.

Institutional change Curated by Professor Helena Gaunt, this session brings together doctoral students and colleagues to explore new experiences of change within the performing arts from various perspectives – artistic, educational, personal and organisational – and considers the degree to which they are triggering a paradigm-shift in professional practices.

How to find us

The Guildhall School is located in the heart of the City of London, in the midst of an exciting cultural hub which includes the Barbican Centre, LSO St Luke’s and the Museum of London. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars nearby on Whitecross Street, Old Street and in Farringdon and Spitalfields, for those looking for a pre-concert or pre-theatre meal.

The School’s Silk Street and Milton Court buildings both have main entrances on Silk Street. The closest tube stations are Moorgate and Barbican.
