Santa Claus will be coming to town on Saturday, Dec. 3.

The evening’s festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with the start of the Christmas In The Park festival in Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge.

Christmas lights will adorn the bandstand to highlight the evening’s entertainment, which will be kicked off by students from St. Patrick’s School singing Christmas carols.

Festival-goers will be treated to free hot choc-olate, popcorn, cider, smores and cookies.

However, the Christ-mas Festival Society asks people to bring their own mugs in order to re-duce the amount of waste around the park.

A food vendor will be open from 4 to 6 p.m., serv-ing hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries, by dona-tion.

All proceeds will go back to the Christmas Festival

Society to ease the $10,000 it takes to put on the festi-val every year.

“We want it to be as free as possible,” Natalie Freer, publicity coordinator for the Maple Ridge Christ-mas Festival Society, said of the evening. “We don’t want anybody to feel ex-cluded.”

At the Children’s craft section, there will be a choice between making one of two Christmas or-naments; a candy cane or a wooden nativity scene.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be welcoming children at Santa’s Yurt, which will be in a new location. This year the yurt will be locat-ed on the new brick area at the southwest corner of the park in order to give Santa better light to see children’s Christmas wish letters.

Children can bring their letters when they visit with Santa, then put them into Santa’s Mailbox, lo-cated beside the yurt.

A free four-by-six-foot picture will be given out to all of Santa’s visitors. People are also welcome to take their own photo-graphs.

At 6 p.m., Santa will leave

the yurt to help countdown the lighting of the new Peace Tree, located along 224th St. at the southwest area of the park, which will signify the beginning of the Santa Claus Parade.

This year, the parade will be bypassing the loop around Memorial Peace Park for a couple of differ-ent reasons Freer said.

“We have had the fire de-partment say they’d like to have their large fire trucks in the parade.”

They are unable to make the turn at the top of the loop.

“We have also had con-cerns with safety be-cause so many people are crammed into the park,” Freer added. “If it doesn’t work out this year, we will bring the loop back into next year’s route.”

The Santa parade will begin at 7 p.m.; Christmas in the park starts at 4 p.m.

Parade routeThe parade will start at Church Avenue, travel south along 222nd Street, turn east on Dew-dney Trunk Road, then south on 224th Street. It will go straight past Memorial Peace Park, then turn right at Lougheed Highway, fi nishing at 223rd Street.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Mead-ows Christmas Hamper Society is off and running

again, working to create a mem-orable Christmas for financially disadvantaged families in the community.

Every year the society col-lects new, unwrapped toys for children, items for teens, adult-oriented gifts for parents and caregivers, gift wrapping and cash and cheques to pay for Christmas food vouchers and more toys.

The goal of the Christmas Hamper Society is to provide a sack full of toys, with a value of at least $75 each, for every child up to 18-years-old, and a full traditional Christmas dinner for the whole family.

Families are also treated to two days of free shopping at the hamper’s Rudolph’s Recy-cle Shoppe and a free shopping spree for the children to choose a gift for their parents and care-givers in the Kids’ Only Gift Shoppe.

Last year, the Christmas Ham-per Society registered and as-sisted 625 families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and is expecting the same demand or

even more this year. The society does not do any

door-to-door or telephone so-liciting and operates strictly through the generosity of vol-unteers.

Donations can be dropped off at the Christmas Hamper Soci-ety office, located on the Albion Fairgrounds, across from Planet Ice. The office will be open from

10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday to Friday in November, and start-ing Dec. 1, it will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. until Dec. 17.

Toy drop-off boxes will also be located in Haney Place Mall and ValleyFair Mall.

At the Christmas festival on Dec. 3 in Memorial Peace Park, toys and cash will be collected

at the society’s big red tent that will easily be identified by a sideways Santa hat logo.

Cash and cheques can also be dropped off at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News office at 22328 – 119th Ave..

If you would like to sponsor a family for Christmas, go to www.mrpmchristmashamper.org and click on the Good Neighbour

Program, where you will be able to get information, as well as an application form.

Families wanting to qualify for a Christmas hamper can regis-ter at the Christmas Society of-fice on Nov. 13, 20 and 30 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Also register on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at either the Royal Cana-dian Legion on 224th Street at Brown Avenue, or Ridge Mead-ows Community Services, at 22359 119th Ave.

In Pitt Meadows, registration will be at Pitt Meadows Lions Hall on Harris Road on Wednes-day, Nov. 30, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

To qualify, you will need to bring the last stub or print out of a monthly financial assistance or disability cheque, CareCards for members of the whole fam-ily, proof of residency, photo ID for yourself and proof of age for any children over 16-years-old.

If your family is low-income, you will need to bring any proof of lack of income such as wage receipts, rent, phone, hydro, car payments or any other bills, in addition to CareCards, proof of residency, photo ID and proof of age.

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Asso-ciation has launched

its 16th annual Coats for Kids campaign in support of the Lower Mainland Christ-mas Bureau, a group which many initiatives help pro-vide a brighter Christmas for families in need.

In addition to the GVHBA offi ce, 29 companies at 45 lo-cations in 13 municipalities will serve as coat drop-off sites from November 21 to December 9.

Coats, toques, gloves, blan-kets and new unwrapped toys will be collected at two locations in Maple Ridge.

Not only is there a need for children’s coats, but also for teens and adults as well, says GVHBA president Pe-ter Simpson.

“There is a greater need this year than in past years as the economy is not as strong as last year,” says Simpson.

He is encouraging people to really search their clos-ets for items that they either don’t wear or have grown out of.

Guide to the Holidays - THE NEWS -- Wednesday, November 23, 2011 -- B7

Simpson started the cam-paign 16 years ago after driving to work through a poorer neighbourhood in the city.

He saw children walking to school in cold weather without proper clothing and realized that they just didn’t leave their homes dressed like this by choice.

They didn’t have warm coats to wear.

As soon as he got to his offi ce, Coats for Kids was born.

Last year, the GVHBA col-lected more than 3.000 win-ter coats, scarves and gloves

from 34 companies that al-lowed their premises to be used as drop-off locations in 13 municipalities through-out Metro Vancouver.

“We always get a very good response from the people of Maple Ridge,” says Simpson. “They open their hearts and their clos-ets for us.”

Donations will be picked up by the local Lower Main-land Christmas Bureau agency after Dec. 9 in time for them to distribute the coats when needy families pick up their Christmas Hampers this year.

However, Simpson says,

if other agencies that help the homeless need coats to distribute, they can con-tact him at [email protected] and he will make sure their needs are addressed as well.

• Drop boxes will be located at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News at 22328 119th Avenue, where donations will be col-lected from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Donations will also be collected at Portrait Homes Ltd., 13851 – 232nd St. from Monday to Friday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas at Osprey

Osprey Village will have its fourth an-nual Christmas tree

lighting celebration on Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

There will be caroling, crafts, warm beverages, along with the official lighting of the tree. Santa Claus will also be on hand for the festivities.

The third annual Pitt

Meadows Christmas will take place on Dec. 2, put on by the Pitt Meadows Community Foundation and the City of Pitt Mead-ows.

Join in the cel-ebration at Pitt Meadows Spirit Square from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for this free family event.

The annual lighting of the City Christmas tree

will be taking place along with live en-tertainment by the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts and the Showstoppers

Academy of Per-forming Arts.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be making an ap-pearance ,as well.

Refreshments and hot dogs will be avail-able by donation.

The 14th annual Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Haven will be held at the ACT again this year.

Everyone is invited to join in the holiday cel-ebration on Dec. 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the ACT, located at 11944 Haney Place.

Every year the Christmas Haven brings people together on Christmas Eve to provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie for people who face hardship and a lack of support over the holiday season.

It will be a free, non-denominational event that will be wheelchair accessible for people of all ages, ethnicity and socio-economic status.

“The main thing is that everyone is welcome. It’s for anyone,” says organizer Corisa Bell. “It’s to provide a celebration for anyone who doesn’t have family in town or is alone at Christmas.”

This year, the Christmas Haven has teamed up with the Salvation Army, which will be catering the event.

A free hot turkey dinner will be served during an evening fi lled with musical entertainment, in-cluding a Christmas carol sing-a-long.

Children can look forward to crafts and colour-ing, and face-painting provided by the Emerald

Pig Theatrical Society. Finally, Santa Claus will pay a special visit to

hand out a present to everyone.Bell says the Christmas Haven is planning to

serve around 300 people this year, but that there will be extras just in case more people attend.

Any leftover food will go back to the Salvation Army and toys will be kept for next year’s Christ-mas Haven, Bell added.

Since the Salvation Army will be providing the food this year, Bell says instead of turkey dona-tions, the Haven is looking for cash donations and donations of presents for teenagers and adults, who are often overlooked.

Bell suggests gift cards since teens and adults are hard to buy for, but the Haven will accept any donation.

From Dec. 1-31, cash donations will be accept-ed at both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Leisure Centres, and donation boxes for toys and presents will be located at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and at Curves in Maple Ridge at 22335 Lougheed Highway.

More volunteers will also be needed this year, says Bell.

And the sooner the better because every volun-teer needs a criminal record check.

Corisa Bell, a Haven organizer, expects about 300 people to attend this year.

The 15th annual West Coast Express Santa Train will be rolling

into town on Dec. 10 and the 17 this year.

Each year the West Coast Express offers free rides to Waterfront Station and back with the donation of a new, unused and unwrapped toy for the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.

The Lower Mainland Christ-mas Bureau, established in 1930, currently gathers toys all year round to be distribut-ed to needy children by 12 lo-cal bureaus around the Lower Mainland.

All toys collected here will go the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, which will then dis-tribute them with Christmas Hampers or at Rudolph’s Gift Shoppe.

Last year, 120 toys and more than $40 was collected at the Pitt Meadows station, 500 toys and more than $60 at Maple Meadows station, and 350 toys and more than $55 at Port Haney station.

Lorraine Bates, co-chair of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Mead-ows Christmas Hamper So-ciety, says the Santa Train is a great way to get children involved in giving.

“The Santa Train is perfect

for young kids to get involved in because they are not com-ing in contact with the re-cipient children,” Bates says, since parents bring their chil-dren when they pick up their Christmas hampers.

“The Santa Train is some-thing away from this offi ce.”

We also get some pretty nice toys for the children, says Bates.

“We know it is a diffi cult time of year for the local toy bureaus,” says organizer Kyla Daman-Willems. “We are told every year how much the infl ux of toys and cash is ap-preciated to help families in need.”

The train will be leaving

Mission City station at 10 a.m. on both days. It will arrive at Port Haney station at 10:17 a.m., Maple Meadows station at 10:23 a.m., Pitt Meadows station at 10:27 a.m. before picking up people in the Tri-Cities area and heading to Waterfront station for 11:15 a.m..

Last year, a group from Al-exander Robinson elementa-ry and Rayne Beveridge, with students from the Bergthor-son Academy of Musical Arts, provided musical ambiance at the local train stations. Anyone wishing to be part of the musical entertainment this year can contact Bates at 604-463-6922.

This year, the second annu-al open house at Waterfront Station will take place as part of the annual festivities. From 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., both days, Santa Claus will be on hand for photo opportunities, there will be face painting and crafts for children to do, as well as live musical entertainment.

People are asked to bring non-perishable food dona-tions for the food bank to the Waterfront Station event.

The return train leaves at 5 p.m.

B y C o l l e e n F l a n a g a ns t a f f r e p o r t e r

The Canadian Pacifi c Holiday Train hits the rails again at the end of month and will chug into Maple Ridge

on Dec. 17.Since the program’s inception in 1999,

more than $5.6 million and 2.45 million pounds of food have been collected in Cana-da and the United States.

The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fi ght against hun-ger.

The trains are made up of 14 rail cars, dec-orated with thousands of festive lights and a modifi ed boxcar that turns into a traveling stage for live performances at each stop the train makes.

Both trains will visit 150 cities and towns on both sides of the border. The Canadian train starts off in Quebec on Nov. 27 and heads west through six provinces.

Joanne Olson, executive director of the Friends In Need Food Bank, is hoping ev-eryone is as generous this year as they were last year.

A total of $21,113.24 was presented to the food bank in 2010, as well as 5,500 pounds of food, donated the night of the event.

“Twenty thousand dollars is a signifi -cant amount of money,” Olson said of the generosity of the community. “It is about a month’s worth of our budget.”

Firefi ghters from both the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will once again be col-lecting money for the food bank at various locations on Dec. 10.

Members of the Maple Ridge department will be out from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. collect-ing money at Safeway, both Save On Foods locations and at Coopers.

Pitt Meadows fi refi ghters will be at Mead-owvale Shopping Centre and Meadowtown Centre from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. collecting cash, food and toys, half of which will also go the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christ-mas Hamper Society.

The Billy Minor Pub is giving out $5 gift certifi cates with every fi ve non-perishable food items donated at the pub.

Since the CP Holiday Train program started in 1999, close to 2.5 million pounds of food donations have been collected and $5.6 million.

The 13th annual event will be headlined by folk musician Valdy.

A native to Ottawa, Ontario, Valdy has been performing for more than 40 years and has fans all over the world.

Valdy is behind such hits as Play Me a Rock ’n’ roll Song and A Good Song that was recorded by Quincy Jones under the name Just A Man.

Joining Valdy on stage will be special guests, the Brothers Dubé.

Dubbed as Canada’s youngest rock band, Liam, 14, Jan, 12, and Quinn, 10, have been raising money for charity since they formed the band in 2006. They have performed live

with artists like Arcade Fire and Hollerado and performed on the 2010 Holiday Train with The Odds. They have also raised more than $130,000 for Haiti Relief, breast cancer research and various children’s charity or-ganizations. You can catch them perform-ing Jingle Bells at the Santa Toy Parade on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on YouTube.

This year, the Holiday Train will have an interactive map so viewers can check out all the Holiday Train stops.

As well, the CP Holiday Train will be sup-porting a program called Decorate and Donate to encourage children to help feed their communities.

To participate, go to www.cpr.ca, click on the CPR Holiday Train link, look for “Spread the word,” and download one or more of the Holiday Train designs from the “Decorate and Donate” section.

Once decorated, wrap the art around an empty box, to be fi lled with food or cash do-nations for the local food bank, which can be delivered when the train comes to town.

Then take a picture of your box and send it to the Holiday Train at [email protected], where it will be posted as it travels across Canada.

Christmas at library

Award-winning author Gor-don Kirkland has released his eighth book in time for early holiday shoppers.

The Plight Before Christ-mas is the author’s second full-length novel, following on the heels of his previous book, Crossbow, which was released earlier this year.

“Costco already has an aisle dedicated to their Kirkland brand holiday decorations, so I didn’t think it was too early to bring out my own Kirk-land brand novel,” the Pitt

Meadows resident quipped.

“There have been a lot of people wait-ing for this novel to be released,” he added. “It hit Ama-zon three months to the day from Christ-mas Eve and sales started coming in right away.”

The story is set largely in the early 1960s, fol-lowing a family dealing with a number of somewhat come-

dic calamities and disasters leading up to the holidays. Through it all, the events draw the family, especially the books two cen-tral characters, the father and the older son, closer together.

• The book is available exclusive-

ly from Amazon.com as both a paperback, and for their Kindle e-reader.

The fi fth annual Angel Tree event is under-way at the Vancity

savings credit unions in Ma-ple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

In the lobby of the Ma-ple Ridge branch, at 22824 Lougheed Highway, is a Christmas tree decorated with paper angels by students at Meadowridge School.

On the back of each angel is a child’s name, if they are a boy or a girl, and their Christ-mas wish list.

The children’s names are gathered by Cythera Transi-tion House Society, a non-profi t organization that provides services to abused women and children.

Vancity is looking for peo-ple to pick an angel and fi ll a child’s wish list with un-wrapped gifts by Dec. 10.

The gifts will then be wrapped and delivered to Cythera House in time for the holidays.

“It helps children who are least able to help themselves,” says organizer Gina Rubin. “They are going through a tough time. So, it’s all the more reason to give hope and help.”

To date, 190 children in the community have been helped by the Angel Tree program.

In Pitt Meadows, at the

Meadowtown shopping centre, organizers Shelagh MacGregor and Jayne Per-rault have their tree decorat-ed with 73 angels, up from 60 angels from last year.

“We had a huge response last year,” says Perrault. “We had people coming in and asking for angels, but we ran out.”

This year they asked for more angels and already they have had donations.

“We had a customer come

in yesterday and give us $50 and asked us to do the shop-ping because he didn’t have time,” says MacGregor.

All of the children’s wish lists are organized by the food bank, but the branch will be collecting non-perish-able food items, lightly used clothing and cash donations as well.

People are asked to pick an angel and bring the un-wrapped toys back to the branch by Dec. 15.

The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association will be hosting a contest open to all mem-

bers who decorate their storefront windows for the holiday season.

The BIA is encouraging stores to be imagi-native with paint, lights, seasonal stock and signs.

Three winners will receive a $50 gift certif-icate to the downtown store of their choice.

Window display judging will take place Dec. 5 to 9, and prizes will be awarded mid-December.

Let the DMRBIA know which downtown windows you like best by e-mailing them at [email protected].

Christmas marketThe third annual Downtown Maple Ridge

BIA Christmas market will coincide with the annual Santa Claus parade and Christ-mas in the Park on Dec. 3.

From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., 20 to 25 vendors will be showcasing their goods in the cov-ered area behind Jim’s Pizza.

For anyone wanting to be a vendor in the Christmas Market, the cost is $15 for mem-bers and $20 for non-members. Contact the BIA for more information at 604-467-2420.

The BIA is also encouraging all downtown businesses to participate in the ‘Light up the Town’ event by turning off their window display lights from 5:55 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, in the lead up before Santa magically lights up the new Peace Tree at the entrance to Memorial Peace Park and the colourful pa-rade starts.

There are many different ways for down-town businesses to participate in the Christ-

mas Festival on Dec. 3, even if they don’t want to be a part of the Christmas Market.

The BIA suggests extending store hours, serving hot chocolate or hot tea or cider, handing out festive treats like candy canes or even doggie treats with your business card attached, playing Christmas music from your store or organizing a children’s activity.

A visit to Santa at the North Pole has never been closer to home.

On Nov. 26, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be moving to their rustic secret vil-lage at Timberline Ranch in Maple Ridge, at the north end of 224th Street, and will welcome visitors to their abode until Christ-mas Eve.

Bringing tradition back into Christmas, rustic cot-tages at the ranch are dec-orated to create a unique North Pole scene.

The cottages and the Great Elvern Hall will make up the heart of B.C.’s North Pole.

A world of elves and Christmas magic await children during a two-hour tour culminating with a private visit with Santa Claus.

An elf will guide families to each interactive scene, where they will learn how to be elves at the Elvern School of Secret Skills, help the elves make teddy bears, visit Mrs. Claus for story time in her kitchen, mail

their letters to Santa at the post offi ce, before meeting with the big man himself.

There will be four new at-tractions this year in addi-

tion to the scenes from last year, says Martin Miller, president of North Pole Events Inc.

At the Gingerbread Bak-ery, each child will get to decorate a gingerbread man, to eat there or save for later.

You can also visit the Sym-Funny Hall, an Elvern music room where children will learn to sing like the Elves. They can also visit The Toy Inventor’s Lab with Profes-sors Hazel Nut and Wal Nut and Gift Wrap Chaos.

This year group sizes have been reduced to 20 people for a more intimate experi-ence, with more frequent tours.

There will also be plenty of scenes that families can wander freely around until it’s time to see Santa.

There will be a choice be-tween fi ve different teddy bears to make at the toy workshop this year.

The bears are optional and range in price from $7.95 to $35.95 to $79.50. and can be purchased online or on site at the North Pole General Store.

Also new this year is a “Gift From Santa” option that can be purchased from the online store or can be brought with you when you visit.

If purchased from the online store, the elves will wrap and label your gift and

Santa will present it to your child when you visit with him.

If you bring a gift with you, the gift must already be wrapped and labelled and for $5 Santa will present the

gift to your child during the visit.

In addition, the North Pole promises an evening fi lled with even more light shows, elf dwellings and decora-tions than last year.

The Salvation Army Caring Place’s annual Christmas kettle campaign kicked off

Friday, marking the start of the holiday season.

The Sally Ann’s Christmas kettle campaign is as synonymous as its Red Shield logo; when one thinks of Christmas, one thinks of the Salvation Army, the bell ringers, and their kettles.

The kettles are at eight locations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Mead-ows: Real Canadian Superstore; Safeway; Save-On-Foods at 203rd Street; Zellers; Valley Fair B.C. Liquor Store; Cooper Foods; Cine-plex Odeon Meadowtown Cin-emas; Canadian Tire; Fox’s Reach Liquor Store; Maple Ridge Liquor Store; Save-On-Foods at 227th Street; and ValleyFair Mall, east entrance.

All funds raised through the kettle campaign go directly to the Caring Place meal program, which provides 9,000 meals a month to the most needy in our commu-nity.

In addition, the Caring Place also provides over 100 bagged lunches each day for children of low-in-come families at various schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

Join The Caring Place at a “Ket-

tle Season Celebration” on Satur-day, Nov. 27 at Zeller’s in Maple Ridge from 10 a.m. to noon, where the Ridge Meadows Flames team and Salvation Army volunteers will be ringing in the season with hot chocolate and entertainment for all ages.

This Christmas, also consider giving the gift of your time. To

volunteer for the Christmas kettle campaign, call Amy McNutt at 604-463-8296, ext. 104 or email [email protected]. Volunteer shifts are fl exible and can fi t any schedule.

Caring Place: The Salvation Army Caring

Place is a multi-function facility focused on providing the essential needs of food, shelter and support to the residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The Salvation Army is an inter-national Christian organization that began its work in Canada in 1882 and has grown to become the largest non-governmental direct

provider of social services in the country.

The Salvation Army gives hope and support to vulnerable people today and everyday in 400 com-munities across Canada and more than 120 countries around the world.

The Salvation Army offers prac-tical assistance for children and families, often tending to the ba-sic necessities of life, providing shelter for homeless people and rehabilitation for people who have lost control of their lives to an ad-diction.

Red Nose gearing upB y C o l l e e n F l a n a g a ns t a f f r e p o r t e r

The 16th annual Op-eration Red Nose campaign is gearing

up for another busy holiday season.

With the goal of making the roads and highways safer for everyone, Opera-tion Red Nose volunteers give rides home to people out partying and celebrat-ing who may feel unfi t to drive but want to get their vehicles home as well.

Although the service is free, donations are accepted and 100 per cent of the mon-ey will go to Pacifi cSport Fraser Valley to help local high performance, podium sport athletes in the form of travel and performance grants and various other support services.

This year the service will be in operation between 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. on Nov. 25 and 26, and Dec. 2-3, 9-10, 16-17, and 31.

Last year, volunteers in Maple Ridge and Pitt Mead-ows gave 353 rides to party-goers, nearly double that of 2008, when the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows campaign be-gan.

Bruce Livingstone, com-munity liaison for Opera-tion Red Nose Ridge-Mead-

ows, thinks that changes to drinking and driving laws may be the primary reason for the jump in rides, but he would also like to think that the program is simply more established.

“People are more in tuned to what they are going to do and how they are getting home before they go out,” says Livingstone.

This year it is expected Operation Red Nose Ridge-Meadows will surpass the 1,000 rides mark and over-take last year’s total.

Operation Red Nose is always looking for volun-teers. Anyone wishing to do so can visit either the Ridge Meadows RCMP detach-ment on Edge Street or the community police station in

Pitt Meadows along Harris Road to pick up an applica-tion form.

All applicants are required to get a criminal record check, which takes time, says Livingstone, so the ear-lier you decide to volunteer the better.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Living-stone said of volunteering. “It is a great way to meet people and to give back to the community.”

Livingstone is also looking to build up an inventory of old Telus cell phones, since Telus provides the volun-teers free air time.

Anyone wishing to donate a phone can drop them off at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Mead-ows News, 22328 – 119th Av-enue, Maple Ridge.

This year will be the larg-est Operation Red Nose campaign to date, with ser-vices available in 111 host communities in eight prov-inces across Canada.

• To volunteer contact vol-unteer director Dena Sorley at 604-834-4554.

files

Operation Red Nose expects to get a 1,000 calls for free rides home this year, so more volunteers are needed.
