This exhibition A Bounce Borrowed brings together five artists. It looks at the special energy that happens within a group show. The artists bring distinct approaches to making work and are at varying stages of their artistic development. The exhibition also offers a lens for a number of other considerations, for example what structures and approaches to making artwork influence the artists and how might this play out in their artistic language? The title A Bounce Borrowed references friendships, exchange and how exhibition making may influence how artworks speaks to audiences. The works are playful in their use of materials and ideas and are engaging in how materials are repurposed, represented and in the stories and perspective taken.

Ailbhe Ní Bhriain Saturday 8th April to Saturday 27th May

This exhibition brings together a number of recent works by Irish artist Ailbhe Ní Bhriain for the first time. Ní Bhriain works with film, computer generated imagery and sound to create immersive multi-screen installations that play with ideas of representation and displacement. Her films depict archetypal or generic locations that have been transformed into a dream-like theatricality. Whether a flooded library inhabited by birds of prey or a disused airport housing a rudimentary landscape, these works represent an altered reality in which our expectations of time and place come undone.

Return of the popular play writing workshops led by Dr Rhona Trench. Have you a story to tell? Do you want to tell it through playwriting? The Dock offers you three fun and stimulating sessions on playwriting to get you started. These sessions are open to new and emerging writers of all ages. €15 for three sessions Rhona is Programme Chair of the BA in Performing Arts at IT Sligo and lectures in Drama Studies, Directing for Theatre, Performance Analysis and Literature and Representation. Rhona holds a PhD in Contemporary Irish Theatre from Queen’s University Belfast. Her book, Bloody Living: The Loss of Selfhood in the Plays of Marina Carr, was published 2010. She is currently editing a book on theatre and performance practices, in and of Ireland, which will be published by Cambridge Scholar Press next year.

Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Leitrim Youth Theatre Company is a professional youth theatre organisation dedicated to providing opportunities for young people who wish to become involved in acting and theatre. Youth Theatre training at The Dock covers many aspects of theatre performance and production. Areas such stage management, costume, make-up and set design and promotion are all part of the training modules covered during what is a very popular and rewarding course. The training is a great way for teenagers and young people to gain practical skills and meet new people, build confidence, and above all, have fun! It’s also a great way to make friends outside of the school networks and a fantastic opportunity to work with people your own age. You don’t need previous experience to join but advance booking is essential as there is a large demand for places.

Artist Naomi Draper has developed a series of extraordinary sensory experiences aimed at developing creativity and the social skills of little ones under five years old. Tell a Story with poet & writer Gerry Boland

In this series of six workshops over a six week period, Gerry Boland, author of the popular series of Marco the Grizzly Bear books, will focus on showing teenagers how they can approach writing their own stories. Through a variety of interesting and fun exercises and approaches, he will draw on the individual imagination of each participant and explore different story ideas and themes. There will be writing, a bit of reading, some time for illustration and the opportunity in the last two workshop sessions to actually make your very own book with artist Natalia Beylis.

The overall aim is that at the end of six weeks participants will have written a story or two that they will be proud of but also that they will have had a few laughs in the process. €65 for six weeks

Gerry Boland’s first Marco book, Marco Moves In, was nominated for the Bord Gais Children’s Book of the year in 2011. His other books include, Marco Master of Disguise, Marco Moonwalker, and his most recent book, a collection of poems for the young reader titled The Secret Lives of Mothers. Gerry is a frequent visitor to schools across the northwest, where he gives readings and facilitates creative writing workshops for all ages.

Engineers Week Making Moving

Engineers Week is a week-long programme of nationwide events to create a positive awareness and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession. It is aimed at people of all ages, especially students, their teachers and parents. The Dock is offering those aged 8 to 14 years the chance to get involved in applying engineering principles to creative and fun arts practices.

Artist Vanya Lambrecht Ward will be on hand on Saturday 4th March with a super workshop which involves no digital tricks but lots of illusion as participants are shown how to create Zoetropes and Thaumatropes. You might be asking yourself what a Zoetrope and/or Thaumatrope is exactly. Well they are devices that create the illusion of movement and, in the case of Thaumatropes, can actually make still images move! The great news is that these can be made with readily available materials such as cardboard and paper so we can take engineering principles and apply them to artistic creativity and learn more about both disciplines in the process.

Vanya Lambrecht Ward is a Sligo based artist. Her practice is centred around our built environment and combines photography, sculpture, painting and all things spatial. Vanya has worked for many years with Kids’ Own Publishing Partnership, in education, Arts Initiative in Mental Health and other community setting as an artist and designer.

National Drawing Day for Families

Everyone draws, scribbles and doodles at some stage and we all sketch out maps, directions etc. So whatever your skill, ability or perspective on drawing this is a great opportunity to reconnect with your drawing abilities together with friends and family of all ages. National Drawing Day is a nationwide initiative which is coordinated by the National Gallery of Ireland. The Dock will provide a range of drawing materials and the ideas which will unlock new techniques and offer you the opportunity to try out fun ideas. The sessions will be led by artists Paddy McCann & Sharon Kelly.

Sharon Kelly is an artist based in Belfast with a practice that centres on drawing process. She has undertaken many projects and residencies exploratory in nature including collaborative productions with poets, dancers / choreographers and with children and teachers in educational settings. This very popular evening has been running at The Dock on the first Tuesday of every month for the last two years. It is a free, informal event for all writers, readers and beat poets to share their work. Its continuing popularity is due to the relaxed and collegiate atmosphere where those who come along can listen to new writing, offer their thoughts and opinions and, if they wish, make their own contribution. The format is informal but structured so as to give each person adequate time to share their work and to get constructive feedback from the group. The style of writing varies from poetry to short stories, essays,plays and even extracts from works in progress. Members of the group have also been involved in public readings at The Dock at events such as the annual Culture Night celebrations in September and National Poetry Day. If you would like to become involved all you have to do is come along. New comers are always welcome to attend, enjoy a cup of tea of coffee hear, some wonderful new writing and chat.

Michael Collins is an actor, writer and performer, he has acted on stage in the Abbey and Olympia Theatres. He is a member of the Irish Traveller community who has been an advocate of Traveller human rights for over 20 years. Many will know him from his depiction of Johnny Connors in RTE’s Glenroe for over 10 years. He has also appeared in numerous films including Trojan Eddie and Man about Dog and most recently King Of The Travellers and Stalker.

In this production he plays Jim, a Traveller father who struggles to cope with the suicide of his 23-year-old son. After his son’s death, Jim has become isolated from other family members and is misusing alcohol. The audience accompanies Jim on an emotional roller-coaster ride as he articulates loving memories of his son, his fears for the well-being of his other three children, the turmoil that has developed in his relationship with his wife, his anger at God, and his agonising questions about whether there was something he could have done to prevent his son’s death.

The performance will be followed by a Q & A with Dock artist in Residence Sorcha Fox and Michael Collins where topics raised by the play will be discussed.

National Poetry Day Celebrations

For National Poetry Day we will be featuring readings by poets Colm Keegan, Sorcha Fox, Roseleen McDonagh, with musicians Dee Armstrong, Lughaidh Armstrong Mayock and Megan Lawlor.

Dock Theatre Artist in Residence & winner of Lingo’s New Work Fund Sorcha Fox will perform her original work Remember with a live score - dulcimer, fiddle, guitar and percussion. This performance poem is a challenge, personal and political, to look at Ireland and our role in it. It is a call to action and a challenge to listen to and amplify the voices of those who hold the seeds of who we might be.

Colm Keegan is a writer and performance poet, shortlisted four times for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award, for both poetry and fiction. He won the All Ireland Poetry Slam in 2010.

Roseleen McDonagh is regarded as a leading feminist in both the Traveller community and the disability community. A regular contributor to The Irish Times, her new play Mainstream premiered in The Project Arts Centre Dublin in November this year.

Lough Allen Dance Weekend

The 3-day Lough Allen Dance Weekend from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April is a weekend packed with dancing and relaxing outdoor activities on the shores of Lough Allen.

Designed for dancers of all levels participants can take part in classes, workshops, relaxing outdoor activities and impromptu open dance sessions in a fun and festive atmosphere on the shores of Lough Allen. Some of Ireland’s most well known dancers will be there to share their steps, experience and knowledge with a special treat of live music provided for each workshop. We’d especially love to see local people as well as visitors join in at the music and dance session each night. The fee for the weekend is €70 which includes workshops, yoga sessions and open dance sessions. Other outdoor activities – stand-up paddling, guided hill walks, horse trekking, kayaking are separate and can be booked on arrival.

Exhibition Continues: Open Jan 11-14 Jan

Mountains Move While Oceans Do Not Des Cullen: Exhibition of recent Sculptural work,

Fri 27 Jan – 14 FebWorking primarily with limestone, Cullen orchestrates a series of large-scale sculptural forms that explore the force of materials in the enactment of the ‘image’ and in releasing the power of ‘things in themselves.’ One of the ideas that unifies Cullen’s work is an interest in the underlying interconnectedness of things and the ambiguities of identity that emerge as we move between microcosmic and macrocosmic orders of scale.

Des Cullen is an artist currently living and working in North Leitrim. He studied sculpture at GMIT where he graduated with Honours in 1996. He completed a First Class Honours Degree in Painting in Sligo IT and more recently an MFA at Ulster University, Belfast (2014).

Water Senses Ruth Le Gear: Video work Screening

Opening 10 – 23 MarchLe Gear’s practice involves an engagement and meditation with the landscape, making visible the invisible by creating a tangible response to forces that are not immediately apparent. Water Senses has emerged from the outcomes of research, collaboration and fieldwork based around water and its memories held within Glenade Lough. The water and ice remedies that she creates are for water bodies initially and then people. The water

remedies are a way of drawing out the layers of embodied energy that is held within the water. Each remedy interacts with the energy of the human body in a unique manner. Water Senses is supported by the Arts Council’s Arts and Disability Connect Scheme managed by Arts and Disability Ireland. Also kindly supported by Leitrim County Council, Leitrim Sculpture Centre and The Model.

Le Gear (b.1985) graduated from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) with a degree in sculpture in 2007. Exhibitions include a solo show in Galway Arts Centre (2009) Ev+a (2008), and Claremorris Open (2008). In 2011 she was awarded a 6 month residency in Fire Station Artists’ studios, Dublin. Other residencies include The Arctic Circle (2012) Berlin (Culturia 2012), Iceland (SIM, 2012/09) Cill Rialig, (Kerry, 2011) Limerick City Gallery of Art ( 2008) and Tyrone Guthrie (2010).

Altered Environments Kathleen O’Leary: Video work Screening

Opening 31 March – 13 AprilO’Leary’s artworks are multidisciplinary in nature including Drawing, Painting, Video, Installation, Photography and Interactive Media. Altered Environments is the result of digital collaborations with artists, musicians, performers and technicians that explore how the body and its movements change the conditions of a site and alter the meaning and use of a place.

O’Leary completed her Masters in ‘Art in the Contemporary World’, NCAD in 2013 and her B.F.A (Hons) Degree, Institute of Technology, Sligo in 2005. She screened ‘Second Sight | Site’ at Corina Fastnet Short International Film Festival in Schull West Cork, 2014, and curated ‘Mercurial’ for The Five Glens Arts Festival, Manorhamilton, (2015). In 2013 O’Leary screened her short film ‘Second Sight | Site’ at the Riverside Studios – The Irish Film Festival London, 2012. She launched her second solo show ‘Fifth Wheel Element Project’ at Pallas Projects, Dublin 2013.

Outsider Liz Byrne – Exhibition

Opening 21 April – 4 MayByrnes printmaking is process driven and inspired by the weather patterns in the local landscapes - the heavy rains and ever changing light. Her Outsider images capture the atmospheric cloudscapes just prior, or immediately after a downpour, which she combines spontaneously to form multi-layered responses to light in print and plate.

Byrne is an artist, printmaker and community arts worker, living and working in North Leitrim. She obtained her BA (hons) in 3Dimensional Design, Loughborough College of Art UK1975-1978 and a Diploma in Community Arts at Reading College UK, 1998-2000. She is a member of the Manorhamilton Print Group, and organises ‘peer 2 peer’ artist-led print development and training. Her community workshops range across the age groups and encourage self-fulfilment, confidence building and creativity through a wide use of practical arts and crafts processes. Group exhibitions include Evidence of Small Behaviour Print symposium Leitrim Sculpture Centre 2016.

Photopolymer and Photo-etching Print Techniques (Foundation)TUTOR: JOHNNY BUGLER. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 6. COST: €180

Photopolymer printmaking utilises a light activated printmaking plate that is etched without the need for acid and produces results similar to the 19th century photographic process of photogravure. Johnny Bugler received a Masters in Fine Art Printmaking from The University of the Arts, London. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad, most recently in The Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Currently he is technician at Cork Printmakers studio in Cork, Ireland.

SAT 1 & SUN 2 APRIL 2017Digital Portfolio Development & Presentation Workshop

TUTOR: CHRISTINE MACKEY. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 5 COST: €110 This two day intensive course will develop portfolio presentations skills that concentrate on the creative layout of digital material through In-Design and Photoshop applications and how to make the work ready for portfolio presentation (both for projection and screen-based viewing) PDF print-ready, Wordpress or other social platform using PDF links. Christine Mackey’s research based practice is rooted in environmental concerns and the development of meaningful participation. Mackey works across a range of disciplines and site-specific contexts, graduating with a practice-based PhD at the University of Ulster, Belfast (2012).

SAT 1 & SUN 2 APRIL 2017Traditional Printmaking Relief/Block Printing Workshop

TUTOR: DEIRDRE NOLAN. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 6 COST: €150This course will demonstrate the techniques of relief printmaking using the lino block and MDF. Deirdre Nolan studied Fine Art painting at Dublin Institute of Technology and subsequently Art and Design Education at the Crawford College of Art, Cork. She studied Printmaking in Italy and Germany.

SAT 22 & SUN 23 APRIL 2017Welding Workshop

TUTOR: MICHAEL O’HARA. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 6 COST: €190Introduction to cutting and grinding techniques and uses of hacksaw; files; drills; hammers; grinders; chop-saw; sanders. Demonstrated competence in MMA/Arc welding including different weld joints – butt weld, lap weld and T-fillet. Students also attempt similar joints through the TIG welding process. Michael O’Hara is an artist and lecturer in sculpture at Dublin Institute of Technology. O’Hara has shown extensively within Ireland and is a well-known expert in metal fabrication techniques.

SAT 22 & SUN 23 APRIL 2017Workshop In Vernacular Carpentry

TUTOR: NIALL WALSH. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 6. COST: €130 Walsh will lead the group through the process of locating locally sourced hazel and willow to construct simple stools and benches in the style of the ‘cottage’ tradition. Niall Walsh has worked with wood in a range of different contexts from 2d to3d, in gallery contexts, public commissions and sculpture symposiums in Ireland and around the world. www.niallwalsh.ie

TUTOR: JACKIE MCKENNA. DURATION: 3 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 7. COST: €180Students will be introduced to the principles of stone carving and design, the identification and uses of different stone and the use of hand tools. Each student will design and carve a simple form that they can take home with them. Jackie McKenna has completed many public commissions and is an expert in the use of stone in both public space and as a fine art practice in Ireland and abroad.

SAT 29 & SUN 30 APRIL 2017Sand Casting In Aluminium Workshop

TUTOR: KATE ORAM. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 6. COST: €130Discover the ancient technique of sandcasting, see examples of what you can make, learn how to make a master pattern and then cast it in aluminium and then how to finish it. Everyday and found objects (bones, shells, nuts, household items) can lend themselves nicely to moulding, as well as your original sculpted patterns. Kate Oram received a degree in Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics from Brighton University in 1991, specialising in metal and wood. She has run her design workshop for 20 years, working in copper and bronze as well as aluminium, silver, steel, wood, perspex, concrete and stone.

SAT 6 & SUN 7 MAY 2017Stone Lettercutting Workshop

TUTOR: SEAMUS DUNBAR. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 8. COST: €120Cutting inscriptions in stone is an important part of the stone-carvers craft that has been elevated to an art form in its own right. This module teaches calligraphic and typographic design in combination with precise sculptural skills. Seamus Dunbar has exhibited throughout Ireland. Dunbar lives and practices in Manorhamilton and recently completed a Masters degree at Ulster University.

SAT 6 & SUN 7 MAY 2017Make Your Own Casting Facility Workshop

TUTOR: NICK HUGHES DURATION: 2 DAYS.Participants will learn how to make their own casting facility and areas covered include furnace building, metal sourcing and equipment making. No frills budget casting for the home caster with a big emphasis on safety and good practice.Nick Hughes is a master foundry man who has worked for many years across all aspects of mouldmaking and casting processes. He lives in Manorhamilton and is based at Leitrim Sculpture Centre.

SAT 13 & SUN 14 MAY 2017Wood Construction Workshop

TUTOR: DAVID SPENCE. DURATION: 2 DAYS. PARTICIPANTS: 8. COST: €190The aim of this workshop is to make either a workbench/banker or a treadle lathe from working drawings. This includes complex jointing, with mixed materials, understanding the requirements for exterior wood products and the safe use of hazardous chemicals.
