AcAdemic Support center (the LeArning center)The Academic Support Center (ASC) is located on the second floor of the Performing Arts Center (PAC) and offers a range of support services for all LSC-Kingwood students and faculty.

Tutoring is offered by appointment, walk-in and as an open lab. Tutoring is available in the ASC and around campus in approximately 30 subjects including English and math placement testing. Conversation groups are offered weekly to learners who want to practice their English speaking skills. Contact Vanessa Farmer, program coordinator, at 281-312-1662 or [email protected]. More information is available at http://www.lonestar.edu/tutoring-kingwood.htm.

Peer based Support Services includes the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program and Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL). Contact Charlotte Iserhardt, program coordinator, at 281-318-4336 or [email protected] for more information.

SI is an internationally recognized approach designed to reduce attrition and improve academic performance by employing students who have successfully completed the course as SI leaders. SI leaders work in close partnership with the instructor and hold SI sessions outside of class that form a foundation for student success. SI leaders are especially effective in gateway courses that students find most difficult to pass. Instructors often select a student whom they believe will be an effective SI leader.

PLTL takes place in the classroom and utilizes peer leaders who facilitate small group work under the supervision of the instructor.

The Computer Lab supports most software being taught at LSC-Kingwood and is open to students and instructors. Lab assistants are available at all times to assist with any technical difficulties. Media consulting appointments are available for one-on-one help with PowerPoint, image manipulation or for other media related projects. Contact Traci Stewart Jones at 281-318-4397 or [email protected] for more information.

The Success Training and Referral (STAR) Program (formerly known as Early Alert) helps students with mastering skills (i.e. time management, study strategies, test taking tips) that will provide them with long-term academic success. Students may schedule 30 minute appointments by calling 281-318-4367 or instructors may refer students to the program via myLoneStar.

For more information about these and other services contact Traci Stewart Jones, program manager, at 281-318-4397 or [email protected].

cLubS And orgAnizAtionSRegistered Student Organizations create and support opportunities for students with common interests to come together for a variety of shared experiences. They also provide a framework for students to develop their own special talents and interests and typically are classified as social, ethnic, political, occupational, athletic, academic, religious, or cultural. To form a club, a student must identify a faculty or staff member to advise the group, charter a constitution, and find other interested students who are committed to the mission (in no particular order). There are currently 45 registered student organizations. Information about current organizations and guidelines for starting a new organization may be obtained from the Office of Student Life. For more information contact Tracie Ring, program manager, at 281-312-1794 or [email protected].

coyote cAmp (new Student orientAtion)As part of the Admissions process, all incoming students are required to attend Coyote Camp. During this new student orientation, they are introduced to the campus and its resources. Many components of Coyote Camp are identical to components of orientation among the other five campuses and their prospective centers. Before attending Coyote Camp, students must apply for admission, send previous official transcripts, provide proof of bacterial meningitis vaccine (if needed) and take placement test(s) (if needed). Students should leave orientation with a schedule for an upcoming semester and understand where the buildings and many of their resources can be found. For more information contact Rick Walsh, orientation coordinator, at 281-312-1790 or [email protected].

diSAbiLitieS AdALSC-Kingwood is committed to ensuring that equal access to its educational programs, activities, and facilities occurs for students with disabilities. Disability Services assists current and future students by determining and recommending appropriate academic support services. Disability Services focuses on helping students with disabilities make a successful transition to college and acts as a referral source for services both on campus and within the community. All students with disabilities are encouraged to register with Disability Services on the campus they will be attending and provide appropriate documentation of their disability. Students should register as early as possible to help ensure that all accommodations are in place by the beginning of the semester.

Students will receive letters documenting the accommodations determined necessary for each course and must submit a letter of accommodation to each instructor. Provision of the accommodations will begin at the time the student presents the letter of accommodation to the instructor, and are not retroactive to any instruction or evaluation prior to the instructor’s receipt of the letter.

For more information, visit http://www.lonestar.edu/disability-services.htm.

diScipLinAry iSSueSAll matters dealing with policy and procedure related to handling inappropriate student behavior (see online Code of Conduct Reference Manual) should be directed to the Dean of Student Development. Students must complete the FAFSA and supply all information as requested to complete their file. In order to qualify for federal aid, students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid (which varies greatly from Academic Progress). To attend one of the colleges, a student must have an F-1 visa. Once accepted for admission into a college, an advisor will send the student a welcome packet containing a SEVIS I-20 form, which is used to obtain an F-1 student visa at a local U.S. embassy or consulate.

Prior to interviewing for the student visa, the student will be required to pay the SEVIS fee via mail using the I-901 form, Western Union, or by logging on to http://www.fmjfee.com/. Students must present their receipt to the U.S. embassy or consulate before being permitted to interview.

The admitting/testing/advising and enrolling process of eSoL students and f-1 visa students is as follows:

2. An admissions representative will help students complete the online application.3. An advisor will provide students with the testing form.4. Students will go to the Testing Center for assessment.5. Students will return to Admissions after testing for referral (or to meet with an advisor or

someone in Continuing Education).
