Introduction This guide provides a list of school records, including minutes, admissions registers, log books, punishment books, scrapbooks and photograph albums, held at Barking and Dagenham Archive and Local Studies Centre. The records of schools sometimes contain genealogical information, such as a child’s parentage, date of birth and place of origin. In addition to this, these sorts of records have the potential to reveal how the provision of education and the experiences of school children have changed since the Victorian Era. For further information about the administrative histories of the schools featured on this guide see Appendix A. We also look after the minute books, correspondence and reports of successive education boards and committees, which offer an insight into the management and organisation of schools in Barking and Dagenham. Further details of this material can be found in Appendix B. Please note we do not hold records, concerning the academic careers of individual pupils that attended school in the borough, such as examination results and certificates. If you wish to obtain proof of your qualifications, you will need to contact your old school or the relevant awarding body. For further advice on this, we recommend contacting the Office of Qualifications and Examination Regulation. For further information about the contents of any of the collections listed below or to enquire about viewing archive material in the reading room, please do not hesitate to contact a member of staff by email at [email protected] or telephoning 020 8227 2033.

Educating Dagenham The first School Board was established in Dagenham in 1874. At this time there were already five elementary schools in the parish, of which two were charity schools founded by William Ford, two belonged to the Church of England, and one was probably connected with the Plymouth Brethren. During the next 30 years the school board built five further schools at Dagenham Village, Becontree Heath, Chadwell Heath, Hainault, and Marsh Green. In the same period two of the older schools at Dagenham Village and Chadwell Heath were closed, so that in total there were eight schools in the parish when the administration of education was taken over by Essex County Council. The council built a school in Whalebone Lane in 1907 and closed Hainault School in 1911. The first permanent new school to accommodate children from the Becontree Estate was opened on Green Lane in 1923. By 1929 county council had built total of fifteen new schools, two of them senior, one of which was built in Ilford. Under the Education Act of 1944 the Borough of Dagenham exercised its right to become an Excepted District. As a result, between 1945 and 1962, six new county schools were built in Dagenham, as well as Robert Clack Technical School, two secondary modern schools and one special school on the Heathway. Rush Green college of Further Education opened in 1961.
