Some people choose to visit Loveland as an art destination, while othersare pleasantly surprised to learn of this art-enriched community when theyarrive. The Sweetheart City provides a sculpture wonderland with justunder 300 bronze sculptures positioned for viewing throughout the com-munity. In Loveland, visitors and residents see sculptures on the way to thegrocery store, in residential neighborhoods, in front of banks and offices, inparks and on playgrounds. In addition sculptures, paintings, photographsand fiber pieces of art embellish city buildings and local businesses. Thearea’s diverse mix of art makes the city a vibrant destination and residence.

Loveland became the first Colorado city to pass an Art in Public Placesordinance, which was approved in 1985. This designates one percent of thecity’s capital construction projects of $50,000 or more for the purchase ofart. A nine-member, volunteer citizens’ committee, the Visual Arts Com-mission, oversees the City’s art acquisitions/donations and placements.

Loveland’s Valentine Re-Mailing Programis the largest program of its kind in the nation and has received theattention of national media, including CBS Sunday Morning. From ap-proximately Feb. 1st through the 14th, more than 50 volunteers gatherat the Loveland Chamber of Commerce to hand-stamp a special mes-sage of love on each of the 150,000 cards sent through Loveland to bereceived by their special recipients. In partnership with the LovelandPost Office, the cards are also postmarked with a special postal cancel-lation. The Loveland Museum/Gallery features a Sweetheart TownUSA exhibit that shares the long tradition of this community program.

The nearly 150,000 valentines come in all shapes and sizes and range fromelaborately handmade to simple and sweet. While most of the cards are ad-dressed to individuals unknown by the stamping crew, some of the famous re-cipients have included Lady Bird Johnson, Abigail Van Buren, Robert Redford,Oprah Winfrey, Judge Judy, sports teams and President Barack Obama. Whilerecent numbers have dropped slightly due to the economy, the program hasreceived as many as 300,000 cards and has an overall average of 200,000 cardsper year.

How it all beganIn the early 1940s, a local stamp club, including member

Elmer Ivers, Loveland’s Postmaster, came up with an ideato assist in their stamp collecting efforts – the creation of are-mailing program. The club tried to promote the programfor a couple of years but realized they needed someonewith more marketing abilities. They sought the help of TedThompson, a master of marketing, who managed Loveland’sRialto Theater and served as president of the LovelandChamber of Commerce. Ted realized that Loveland, Colo.had a unique opportunity to share a little love and friendshipwith the people of the United States, and indeed, the worldthrough a valentine focus. With that, Valentine Re-mailingProgram was born, capturing nationwide exposure.

Ted’s own sweetheart, Mabel, became involved in theprogram when the couple began the Miss Loveland Valentineprogram, selecting (through an interview process) a localhigh school senior to serve as the spokesperson during thevalentine season, promoting the Valentine Re-mailing pro-gram and community. For years, the Thompson’s accompa-nied Miss Loveland Valentine to all of her speaking engage-ments and arranged for her to visit the Capitol where shemet and presented a gift to the governor, and made formalpresentations to Colorado’s House of Representatives andthe Senate.

Also added to the program in 1964, was the creation ofLoveland’s own official valentine card by Ted Thompsonand the Loveland Chamber of Commerce. The first valentinewas designed by Ted Thompson and Loveland art instructorDarrell Elliott.

Loveland’s “Valentine Sweethearts,” as they are affection-ately referred, Ted and Mabel Thompson have since passedaway and the Loveland community feels their absence. To commemorate their vision and love of Loveland, theirmemory lives on through this annual program and thepeople of Loveland. A bronze relief of the Thompsons standsin Thompson Park in Historic Downtown Loveland. Today, the Loveland Chamber of Commerce continues to operatethe program.

Norma Jean and Chet Goodhart have taken over aschaperones of Miss Loveland Valentine and have held thatprestigious role for 19 years.

Official Loveland Valentine CardThe Loveland Chamber of Commerce continues produc-

ing a special Loveland valentine card each year. This cardis generated from the creative works of local artists and

residents who designthe card front and penthe inside verse. JessicaBenes designed the 2012card, and Sheri CobbSouth authored the 2012card verse.

The valentine cardcan be purchased fromearly January throughFebruary 14th throughmany retail outlets in Loveland and northern Colorado. Itcan also be purchased online at www.loveland.org or bycalling (970) 667-6311, where the Chamber signs them (asinstructed) and mails them through the Valentine Re-mailingprogram.

It’s a community affairSeveral years ago, the Chamber added a sponsorship op-

portunity for a local company to sponsor the entire ValentineRe-mailing Program. The 2012 sponsor is McKee MedicalCenter. In addition to the sponsor, many community busi-nesses make donations to the program from flowers donatedby Rowe’s Flowers for the Miss Valentine selection programand professional photographs of Miss Valentine by MarcusEdwards of Sugar Mill Productions; to food and gift itemsdonated by local caterers, restaurants and businesses forthe volunteers who lovingly hand-stamp the cachet for twoweeks at the Chamber.

The 2012 Miss Loveland ValentineIn September, each local high school nominates three

young women from their senior classesto participate in the selection of MissLoveland Valentine. These young ladiesmust have at least a 3.0 GPA, be collegebound and demonstrate leadership skillsin their school and community. Eachcandidate is scored on a 300-word essaythey are required to submit and judgedon a series of questions asked duringan interview conducted by communityleaders. They are also rated on the content and presentationof a speech they give during a luncheon hosted by Thomp-son Valley Rotary Club. A scholarship is awarded from theTed and Mable Thompson Trust Foundation.

While Miss Loveland Valentine is no longer allowed tomake a formal speech to thestate House and Senate, itis still the highlight of herduties as she travels by lim-ousine, provided by SummitLimousine, to Denver topresent a gift to the gov-ernor and tour the capitol. She visits the House andSenate and is introduced byLoveland’s representativesand senator.

The 2012 Miss LovelandValentine is Mary Askham,a senior at Mountain ViewHigh School.

Page 32: Guide to Loveland

Loveland is a wonderland of recreation, wherevisitors and residents are invited to enjoy the manyactivities offered. An abundance of parks, lakes, rivers, sports parks, hiking & biking trails, camping, fishing, horseback riding, plant and wildlife viewing occupythe spring, summer and fall months, while ice fishing, sledding, ice skating, and snow shoeing are winterfavorites.

Living/Playing around WildlifeThe key to living with wildlife is to respect the

wildness of wildlife. “Wildlife” is just that—wild. Mostdangerous and potentially harmful encounters occurbecause people fail to leave the animals alone. Wildlifeshould not be harassed, captured, domesticated or—inmost cases—fed. Intentional or inadvertent feeding isthe major cause of most wildlife problems. It is illegalto feed deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, prong-horn and elk in Colorado. If you have nuisance wild-life issues that cannot be resolved, please check theyellow pages in your phone book under Pest Control. If you have conflict issues involving big game species, you should contact your local Division of Wildlife

office. (Biggame speciesinclude deer,elk, pronghorn,sheep, goats,bear, andmoose.)

AltitudeAdjustment

Loveland is situated at 4,982 feet above sea levelin a semi-arid climate. The sun is more intense here. You should always wear sunscreen of at least 15 SPFand sunglasses when outdoors and drink lots of water.Because there is less oxygen at higher altitudes, giveyourself some time to adjust. Plan a day of rest beforestrenuous exercise like downhill or cross-country ski-ing; pace yourself while hiking or biking. To decreasethe risk of acute mountain sickness at altitudes above7,400 feet, take it easy, eat high carbohydrate foods andlimit salt and alcohol intake.
