Philippe Herreweghe was born in Ghent and studied the piano at the Conservatory there before going on to study medicine and psychiatry. While still at medical school he founded the Collegium Vocale Ghent and attracted the attention of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt who subsequently invited him to collaborate in their recordings of the complete Cantatas of Bach. In an endeavour to do adequate justice to a repertory ranging from the Renaissance to modern and contemporary music, Philippe Herreweghe felt the need to create several ensembles with whom he has made nearly sixty recordings for harmonia mundi. In 2000 the Collegium Vocale celebrated 30 years of a career devoted entirely to Bach and his forerunners; together with the Chapelle Royale, this ensemble has frequently collaborated with the Orchestre des Champs Elysées. Philippe Herreweghe has appeared as guest conductor of ensembles like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Flanders Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. He was the Artistic Director at the Saintes Festival from 1982 to 2002. He was awarded the order of Officier des Arts et Lettres in 1994 and in 2003 he was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. In October of that same year he was knighted by the Belgian King.

He came to fame as a counter-tenor but in recent years has become renowned as a conductor of Baroque and early Classical opera. His work as a conductor subsequently saw him leading performances of the operas of Monteverdi, Cesti, Cavalli, Gluck and Handel in the foremost venues in Europe and Japan. Since 1997 René Jacobs has been artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival. For many years he has been an enthusiastic advocate of Venetian opera. As principal guest conductor and artistic adviser for Baroque repertoire at the Berlin Staatsoper, René Jacobs has conducted Telemann's Orpheus, Graun's Cleopatrae Cesare, Gassmann's Opera seria and Mozart's Così fan tutte. In 2001 the Académie Charles Cros awarded him its highest distinction, the “Prix in honorem”, for his recording of Keiser's Croesus and for his entire career. The year 2004 was marked by a new series of triumphs in the international press. Finally, as the year 2005 begins, René Jacobs has just been chosen as Artist of the Year by MIDEM, and his recording of Le nozze di Figaro has been distinguished by two MIDEM Classical Awards. A few weeks later the same recording won a Grammy Award in Los Angeles (Best Opera 2005). For many years René Jacobs was a teacher at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and maintains a close relationship with this institution, where he trained many singers who are now internationally known.

Paul Van Nevel [email protected] www.huelgasensemble.be Specialization: Mediaeval & Renaissance Labels: harmonia mundi, Eufoda, Sony, … Paul Van Nevel studied early music at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, between 1969 and 1971. There, he formed the Huelgas Ensemble in the early 1970s. The name refers to the Spanish Cistercian monastery near Burgos where Van Nevel travelled as a 24-year-old. In a short time, the ensemble has emerged as one of Europe's premiere vocal ensembles dedicated to the performance of music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. When not rehearsing or performing, Paul Van Nevel spends his time in research. He explores archives and libraries in search of unpublished works and forgotten treasures of the Flemish polyphonic tradition, so the Huelgas Ensemble can bring to life long forgotten music. Bringing together everything from Albertus Magnus's study of temperaments to the “memory theatre” of Giulio Camillo and the techniques espoused by orators of the period, the Huelgas Ensemble offers performances that are at once surprising and yet singularly apt. Besides his devotion to research, Paul Van Nevel is a guest professor at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and receives regular invitations to conduct other ensembles such as Collegium Vocale, the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the Choir of the Nederlandse Bach Vereniging.

Labels: Eufoda, Musique en Wallonie, Naxos, ORF, Passacaille, Ricercar, Alamire, Fundación Las Edades del Hombre Besides being one of the founders and the artistic director of the ensemble, Dirk Snellings is the bass of the quartet that lies at the heart of the Capilla Flamenca. He holds a masters degree in musicology and graduated with a First prize in voice from the Antwerp Conservatory. His repertoire stretches from the Renaissance to contemporary works, with an emphasis on Polyphony and Baroque music. It is precisely in this field of tension between old and new that he has identified an exciting challenge: to look for the specific vocal technique appropriate to each stylistic period, so that each genre can be performed in ideal circumstances. This exploration of old and seemingly lost vocal techniques has led him to a closer consideration of the roots of the early vocal arts. As a soloist, Dirk Snellings has enjoyed a rich performing career, including many radio and television appearances and CD recordings. He has worked with such ensembles as Il Fondamento, La Petite Bande, Le Parlement de Musique, Ex Tempore... He is currently a voice teacher and also lectures in early music history at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (Belgium).

He was exposed to early music at a very young age, along with his brother Wieland. Studying on his own, he gained a thorough knowledge of specific 17th- and 18th-century performance techniques and conventions of interpretation. This led to the introduction, in 1969, of a more authentic way of playing the violin, whereby the instrument was no longer held under the chin, but lay freely on the shoulder; this was to have a crucial influence on the approach to the violin repertoire and was consequently adopted by many players starting in the early 1970s. From 1964 to 1972, Sigiswald Kuijken was a member of the Brussels-based Alarius Ensemble (with Wieland Kuijken, Robert Kohnen and Janine Rubinlicht), which performed throughout Europe and in the United States. He subsequently undertook individual chamber music projects with a number of Baroque music specialists, chief among which were his brothers Wieland and Barthold, Gustav Leonhardt and Robert Kohnen, as well as Anner Bylsma, Frans Bruggen and René Jacobs. In 1972, with the encouragement of Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and Gustav Leonhardt, he founded the Baroque orchestra ‘La Petite Bande’ which, since then, has given countless concerts and has recorded for a number of labels. In 1986 he founded the Kuijken String Quartet (with François Fernandez, Marleen Thiers and Wieland Kuijken), which specialised in the quartets and quintets (with Ryo Terakado as first violist) of the Classical period. Recordings of quartets and quintets by Mozart and Haydn have appeared on Denon. From 1971 to 1996, Sigiswald Kuijken taught Baroque violin at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague; since 1993 he has taught at the Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium in Brussels. In addition, he has been in demand as a guest teacher at a number of institutions (including the Royal College of Music in London, Salamanca University and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena). Since 1998, Sigiswald Kuijken occasionally conducts ‘modern’ symphonic orchestras in romantic programmes (Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn).
