What is Family Medicine?Family medicine is comprehensive health care for your entire family – from newborns to your most senior members. All our physicians are board certified or board eligible in family medicine. Our family medicine physicians deliver a range of acute, chronic and preventive medical care while providing you with a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). PCMH patients and their family (when appropriate) establish a partnership with their practitioners to ensure they have the support and education needed to make decisions and participate in their own health care.

What is Internal Medicine?With a focus on preventive health care and overall well-being, our internal medicine physicians and staff specialize in primary care for adults and patients with acute and chronic multi-system diseases.

What is Internal Medicine/Pediatrics?With a focus on lifelong preventive health care and overall well-being, our internal medicine and pediatric physicians and staff specialize in primary care for infants, children and adults. Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, sometimes called Med-Peds, is the combination of Internal Medicine (primary care for adults) and Pediatrics (primary care for infants, children and adolescents). Physicians receive an additional year of training and are board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics.

What is Geriatrics?Physicians and staff in geriatrics provide support to aging adults and caregivers by offering a comprehensive assessment, developing a plan and making connections to local resources. Each patient completes an initial questionnaire, receives an in-depth assessment and recommendations for care or resources to enhance the quality of life. A geriatrician is a physician who is board-certified in geriatrics. Geriatricians are welcoming new patients at our IHA Senior Health practice location.

What is Midwifery?Women are unique in many ways, very much like IHA’s Nurse Midwives. IHA Nurse Midwives not only offer comprehensive prenatal and childbirth services, but also provide the entire spectrum of well-woman gynecological care. With a focus on wellness education, our midwives are committed to enhancing a woman’s self-reliance and trust in her normal life process. IHA Nurse Midwives practice evidence-based medicine offering comprehensive women’s health care, from preconception counseling, obstetrical and gynecologic services, normal labor management and vaginal deliveries. Nurse midwives have graduated from a nurse-midwifery education program accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and have passed a national certification examination to receive the professional designation of certified nurse midwife. Nurse midwives have been practicing in the United States since the 1920s. Our sensitive and professional approach to gynecologic primary care includes annual assessments and evaluations and consultative services with specialists as needed.

What is Breastfeeding Medicine?Breastfeeding medicine focuses on the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding and lactation. Physicians, often pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists or family practitioners who are trained in lactation support provide care for both nursing mothers and their children. This medical specialty is different than other specialties because physicians who practice in this field combine medical care with lactation support for both mother and baby, providing care to both patients at the same time, during the same office visit. While breast milk is thought of as nature’s first food, breastfeeding does not always come naturally. Breastfeeding is a physiological process that involves both the mother and baby. In addition to lactation support for mother, we provide specialized breastfeeding care for both mother and baby. Because we are seeing both mother and baby as patients in one office visit, we can address and treat any issues that are identified with either the mother and/or the baby. In addition to providing methods to support lactation and breastfeeding, we also provide medical support, guidance and treatment for more complex breastfeeding issues. We have a board-certified Pediatrician and Lactation Specialist at IHA Breastfeeding Medicine and have IHA Lactation Consultants at six IHA Pediatrics practice locations. Our lactation consultants are all certified nurse practitioners who have completed training by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).

What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?Maternal-fetal medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their developing babies, who may be at high risk for special health problems. Women are generally referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist by their obstetrician or by an infertility specialist because he or she sees a potential for a pregnancy-related health concern or because a problem develops during the course of the pregnancy.

Our team is staffed with experienced internists, family medicine physicians and advance practice providers who are experts in the management and coordination of care in the hospital setting. NEWBORN CAREThe IHA Pediatric Hospitalists care for both well and sick newborns at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Mary Mercy Livonia. The IHA Pediatric team consists of Pediatricians and Nurse Practitioners that work closely together and focus on prevention and education for your family about newborn care. The nurse practitioner hospitalists are advanced practice nurses with specialized academic and clinical experience with newborns and parents. The IHA pediatric hospitalist team will make rounds each day, evaluate your baby’s progress and adjust the plan as needed. They are available in the hospital 24 hours per day to respond to care for your newborn.

Neonatology, or neonatal medicine, is the specialized care of newborn infants. It’s a subspecialty of pediatrics. Neonatologists care for premature or seriously ill infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery. These physicians have completed three years of additional fellowship training in neonatal medicine, following their pediatrics residency. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses who assist the neonatologists in caring for patients. IHA Neonatology cares for patients at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Mary Mercy Livonia and provides treatment for: • Breathing difficulties• Birth defects • Premature birth• Feeding difficulties • Many other conditions affecting
