Arlington Deco Delight For Sale

$887,500

Built in the Streamline Moderne style of Art Deco, the home hits all the style’s char-acteristic notes, including:

* Horizontal orientation with stacking boxes * Linear brick accents * Curved corners * Glass block * Smooth exterior wall surfaces * Plain and scalloped cornices and frieze boards * Flat roof with coping * Highlighted and subdued paint colors, with alternating bi-color schemes

Entering the home through the rounded, lighted glass block entry, you find a tele-phone nook with original moulding in art deco “ziggurat style,” along with a stair-well light fixture and entry chandelier which are all original to the house. The new, stacked crown moulding found throughout the main level mirrors the moulding found on the telephone nook. Turning left at the entry, you walk into an early 20th century open floor plan with a sun drenched living room including original deco built-ins and hidden desk, and dining area with French doors leading into a sun-room that overlook the private rear patio and backyard. Turning right at the en-try, you pass a fully updated powder room and enter the kitchen, which has been fully updated to maximize its space while remaining true to the home’s architec-tural roots. Upstairs are three bedrooms, including French doors leading to an upper level balcony, and one fully updated bath. Original hardwood floors throughout the house have been refinished. Sited on a 9,463SF lot in Arlington’s sought–after Lee Heights neighborhood, the home sits on a slight rise above the road with a rear yard that forms a natural amphitheatre featuring a custom patio of large, curvilinear cement pavers where the original owner’s wife would hold vocal performances for friends and neighbors.

This unique property is offered at $887,500.

After Hours Party

June 4, 7-10 PM

After a busy day of shopping, the Art Deco Society of Washington invites you to relax with a glass of wine, satisfy your appetite with an assortment of food, indulge your sweet tooth with an array of desserts, and enjoy the evening’s varied entertainment. Catering will be provided by The Tortilla Factory supplemented by a generous dona-tion from Safeway.

The evening’s entertainment begins with renowned novelty pianist Alex Hassan at the grand piano playing an assortment of songs introduced at America’s world’s fairs of the 1930s. Next, Joe and Tabitha give a lively swing dance demonstration. The evening concludes with Vitaphone and other musical shorts displaying the talents of some of

America’s great singers, dancers, and bands of the 1930s.

Vintage attire is encouraged but not required. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed.

About the Performers

Alex Hassan is a Northern Virginia performing/recording pianist thoroughly immersed in the popular musical musical styles and arrangements of the 1920s and 1930s. High-lights of his musical career include performances at the Smithsonian, a party for the gerschwin family at Manhattan’s Player’s Club, Toronto’s McMichael Gallery, England’s Aldeburgh Festival, the Kennedy Center, Germany’s Piano Rarities festival, and numer-ous ragtime festivals throughout the U.S. He has recorded more than a dozen CDs.

Joseph and Tabitha Robinson began their dance partnership in Orlando, Florida in 2001. Together they began to further their knowledge and fundamentals in Lindy, Colle-giate Shag, Balboa, and Charleston, focusing on the basics and maintaining the authen-ticity of the original dances. Joseph was a founding member of the UCF Swing Club and has one of the most extensive collections of vintage dance clips and movies from which much inspiration and source material is drawn. Shortly after becoming dance partners they began competing in local dance contests in Florida and then in Michigan, recently adding national competitions. Their most recent accomplishments are second place in the

Advanced Lindy Open & Team Division at the 2008 Virginia State Open and second place at the 2009 San Francisco Shag Jam.
