Founded in 1514, then Villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana, it was transferred to the heights of the Casiguagua River (Almendares at present). Finally, in 1529, it was moved to the western shore of Carenas Port (Bay of Havana). In December of 1592, Philip II granted it the title of city, and in 1607 it was acknowledged for the first time as the official capital of the colony.Having an excellent geographic location, in the northern coast of the western region, Havana is the smallest province of the country. It stretches over the east to beautiful beaches and over the west to the marine and the coasts, conceding the island its pleasant climate.Havana is the most cosmopolitan city of Cuba, a peculiarity gained by its privileged geographic position. Since the first centuries it has sheltered very important personalities and institutions, turning it into the principal cultural site of the island. Diversity is the seal of Havana’s culture; which can not be defined as an homogeneous process. It is very difficult to define in a few lines what it really means to be Cuban. In general it could be expressed as the result of the mixture of several ethnicities and cultures that ended up by creating a body and a culture different to the one that originated it. But it can be clearly seen this is an incomplete and rushed definition. So rather than defining the Cuban identity phenomenon, is preferable to define Cubans. And Cubans are unique: happy, witty, sympathetic, loving, argumentative, hospitable, generous, loving of his own, unselfish, disinterested, however, mocking, hyperbolic, exaggerated. Enthusiastic, for him all problems can be solved, but he often finds a problem for every solution. Cubans are also noble, honorable, patriotic. It has major avenues such as Carlos III, and wellknown places as China town and the Callejón de Hammel. The most modern part of the town is occupied by the municipality of Playa, whose Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) shows the most recent architecture type. gave the English the victory over the Morro and the advance toward the city. Restablished the Hispanic dominance in Havana, one of the first dispositions of king Carlos III with regard to the protection of the city was the construction of a colossal fortification, the largest erected until then in America and in the Island . The project, undertaken by Silvestre Abarca, with plans by two French engineers, was finished in eleven years, between 1763 -1774. La Cabaña, with its 750 meters long and ten hectares of surface, together with its strategic position, was considered the summit of the fortification system of the Spanish military constructions, the best of the military engineering of the time.This fortress, along with the Tres Reyes del Morro Fortress, comprises the Military Morro -Cabaña Park, the largest museum in the country. It took in the main military bodies of the Spanish crown and served as a prison to the countless patriots of the war for independence in the last century where some of them were also shot. Once obsolete its defensive function, it served for storage, troops lodging and imprisoning.In the 18th century a cannon shot used to be fired to warn the townsfolk that the gates of the city were about to open or close. Nowadays the inhabitants of the area surrounding the bay can hear every day at 9:00 pm a shot fired by one of the several Spanish guns that the castle has kept since the 18th century. It remains as a ceremony of deep historical meaning.The fortress holds the most important ancient weapon collection of the country: a catapult and a natural size

apostles. In past times, after Spain regained the city by the Treaty of 1763 from the British, who had managed to seize it, a beacon was added to the fortress to warn townfolks about dangers. In 1945 it underwent some preservation works; since then, it has had an active cultural life attracting large numbers of visitants. At the same time, it counts on two restaurants: Los Doce Apóstoles and La Divina Pastora, in addition to a bar, located in its old batteries, a place with an extraordinary view of the coast of Havana.

San Salvador de La Punta CastleAve. del Puerto and Prado, Habana Vieja.

La Punta just like El Morro, was designed to protect the entrance to the Havana Bay which became an important and strategic entranceway to the harbor since the settlement of the town, as well as the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the three of which appeared in the coat of arms of the time. It was designed by Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli , considered the most renowned professional to practice in 16th century Cuba. The works began by 1590 , stopping at times for economical or desagreement matters. Once finished, later changes have followed, until a final capital restoration. Together with the Historic Center, it was declared World Heritage in 1982.

There is an exhibition of his personal objects and photos at the house where he settled.The restoration works undertaken by this facility, located in the municipality of Habana del Este (East Havana), began in 1986 as an integrated effort by the Ministry of The Revolutionary Armed Force and the Office of the Historian of the City , in order to create the military-historic park Morro Cabaña. This site , along with the Old Havana, included in the system of fortresses, was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A greek - roman styled temple inaugurated in 1828 and inspired in its equivalent in the Vasque city of Guernica, it is located in the Plaza de Armas, in the Old Havana. It safeguards the stone identifying the Historic al Site of the City as World Heritage. At this place on November 16, Havana residents gather to celebrate the first mass and the first town council of San Cristóbal de La Habana. Symbol of the city, it is considered by experts the first neoclassical construction of Havana, and the most influencing one in the country.

Royal Force CastleO’Reilly Nº2 e/ Ave. del Puerto and Tacón, Habana Vieja.

It is the older fortress of Cuba, located next to Plaza de Armas. It was the first major fortress of the city, started in 1558 over the ruins of former Plaza de la Villa (village square). For almost two centuries it was the residence of the General Governor, and today it is the Museo de Armas (Arms museum). The floor of the castle is a square divided into nine equal parts topped by four regular bastions. Around it there is a pit bounded by the perimeter wall. Its perfect symmetry recalls the Italian and French Renaissance buildings of the XVI century, although the volumes of its architectural mass and its isolation approach more to the medieval tradition.The first floor extensions began on 1588. The purpose of them was the housing of the governors. By 1630, a floor was added to the tower on the southwest corner of the bastion. A weather vane was place there, known today as la Giraldilla, a copy of the primitive Giraldilla; the original one, a symbol of Havana, is preserved in the Museo de la Ciudad (Museum of the City). It is said it resembles the Giralda of Sevilla, and it dates back to 1631, although it was a top typical of the towers of the time. Its legend, one of the first and most beautiful ones of Havana, goes that it is the image of Inés de Bobadilla’s, wife of Spanish conqueror and governor of the island Hernando de Soto.

Tres Reyes del Morro Castle

This stronghold, of great historical and cultural tourist attraction, is located on a ridge into the port of Havana. Its construction, ordered by Philip II, started in 1589 and ended in 1630. Each of its twelve cannons, which guard the entrance to the Port of Havana, has names of

It was founded in the late XVI century, but it was not until the XVII that it became one of the main squares of the city due to its trade and social activity, since it also served for parties and religious celebrations. Paradoxically, at the beginning it was named "Plaza Nueva" (New Square), and then it became the Plaza Vieja (Old Square) when Plaza del Cristo (Christ’s Square) was built. This square is surrounded by other interesting tourist places like the Cámara Oscura (dark chamber), the headquarter of the Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods, a construction from the XVIII century; a small brewery and the Conde de Villanueva hotel. In the early XVIII century, a fountain was placed in the middle of the square. By the middle of the XIX, it was removed, to be placed in Prado. The square’s current fountain was made in Carrara marble by Giorgio Massari.

San Francisco de Asís SquareOficios and Amargura, Habana Vieja.

Called San Francisco after the convent next to it, this square was conceived, with the objective of supplying water to the ships trading with the metropolis.

For many years it also served to stockpile the goods arriving from the harbor, due to its position, and as a result of the growth of the population by the coastline. Chronicles of the time say that the square had a busy commercial life, as the people, in humble carts or afoot, sold and bought a variety of goods in the space, now refilled, of the dried water area.During the period of Marqués de la Torre (1771-1776), started the stone paving of Oficios street. It was under Tacón that the fountain called Fuente de los Leones (Lions Fountain), a gift to Havana by Count Villanueva, was placed there. At that time it was protected by an iron fence, as seen in some pictures of 1835. Later on, because it was feared that it could be damaged, it was relocated to the Paseo de Isabel II, nowadays Paseo de José Martí (or Paseo del Prado, as it was also called). Finally, the fountain was returned to its original location, where it still remains. Plaza de Armas (Square of Weapons)Tacón e/ Obispo and O’Reilly, Habana Vieja.

It was the first known public square of Havana, also known as the “church square”, functioning as space for public or trading activities. Later on in the 16th century, it was occupied by the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Unlike what the neighbors expected of their plaza –of it being a place of amusement and social interaction– its vicinity to the Castillo de la Real Fuerza led Diego Quiñones, keeper of the fortress, to make it into a maneuver ground in 1584. From that time on the frequency of military exercises made the people call the square Plaza de Armas (Arms Square) as it came to be known. Even today this square is the heart of the old city.

Revolution SquareOriginally called Plaza Cívica (Civic square), it was built in 1959, as a result of a contest. Its star-shaped base has a large 109 meters obelisk with a viewpoint which is the highest point of the city . In its front stands a marble statue of José Martí.At its base is the Memorial José Martí, a space devoted to deepening in the life and work of our national hero. It has four permanent exhibition halls and another for temporary exhibitions, were political and cultural activities take place.In front of the square is the Ministry of Interior, whose façade shows the familiar image of Che Guevara, taken by photographer Korda. Another similar image of Camilo Cienfuegos, by famous writer Enrique Ávila, is displayed at the Ministry of Informatics and Communications.Nearby is also found José Martí National Library, together with other ministries.The square gets its fame with the success of the Revolution, as it is an exceptional witness to important events occurred in Cuba and permanent public stage for its people.

Plaza de la Catedral (Square of the Cathedral)Empedrado e/ San Ignacio and Mercaderes, Habana Vieja.

Its origins date back to a place where, and due to its surface’s properties, the waters became stagnant, so that the place was known at the beginning as Plaza de la Ciénaga (Swamp Square).Until the beginning of the 18th century the square was used for the restocking of the metropolis navy and commercial fleet’s water supplies. In 1727 the work on the church that would give this plaza a greater importance began. Eventually known as Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square), it is the highest expression of the baroque colonial architecture. This is one of the most valuable historical sites in the city, especially for its majestic early 18th century houses. Having hosted social and political events, it now gathers artist from all manifestations.

PARKSCentral ParkPaseo del Prado, Habana Vieja.

Located in the space between three squares and Isabel II old colonial Park, later Paseo del Prado, this park is surrounded by traditional hotels, such as Inglaterra, Plaza, Telegrafo and modern Parque Central. Also enclosing it are important buildings such as Manzana de Gómez, Payret movie theater and Fine Arts Museum. Its center is marked

by the first statue erected in 1905 in honor of José Martí by Cuban sculptor José Vilalta Saavedra, built in Carrara marble. It is one of the busiest spots of Havana for its lush trees and palm trees, providing shadow and space for daily discussion considering it is also regarded as the main sportive informal gathering of the country.

Paseo del Prado Its first name was the Alameda de Extramuros or Isabel II and it extends from the Fuente de La India (The Indian Fountain) and the Plaza de la Fraternidad (Fraternity Square) to Malecón. It was built in 1772, figuring in it eight bronze lion statues, which seem to guard the ride. All down the way former Campo de Marte, Parque de la Fraternidad today, and Teatro Tacón, currently Gran Teatro de La Habana, permanent host of the Opera and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, can be seen, as well as the ruins of the old prison buildings, by the end of the ridle.The place has been divided into four main sections well defined: the Promenade, Central Park, the Esplanade of the Capitol and the Plaza or Parque de la Fraternidad

Havana Forest It was in the decade of the 20’s that the idea of building a park on the banks of the Almendares River was handled. Preservationist of Paris parks at the time, French urban planner Jean Claude Nicolas Forrestier, was invited to undertake a project. The original project envisioned a large national park comprising 2 010 hectares.In the area near Almendares bridge was built Almendares Park, with picnic areas, playground and various outdoor facilities.Currently, the Bosque de La Habana (Havana Forest) is part of a huge project called Parque Metropolitano (Metropolitan Park), covering an area of 678 hectares and including Playa, Plaza de la Revolución, Cerro and Marianao municipalities.

Set in the last seven miles of the river, it has varieties of botanical species. This forest is considered the green lung of Havana.

Botanical GardenHighway Rocío, km 3 �, Arroyo Naranjo.

The dream of building a green cathedral in Havana became true on March 24th of 1984, with the opening of the National Botanical Garden (JBN).The garden is a center for natural exhibition with a representation of the flora of Cuba and the rest of the tropical areas. It is an educational, scientific and recreational institution of some 600 hectares, organized into phytogeographic zones, special collections, exhibition pavilions, laboratories, greenhouses, a forest in honor of Marti, a herbarium, an eco Bamboo restaurant and other recreational areas. The center promotes awareness, in the general population, of the tropical plant biodiversity with emphasis on native flora and the importance of conservation through environmental education activities, which undoubtedly is its essential purpose.The National Botanic Garden of Cuba is, no wonder, a very interesting and special place for us to be in direct contact with the majestic world of plants.

Park LeninCalle 100 and Cortina de la Presa, Arroyo Naranjo.

With an area of 745 hectares, it is a very frequented place, especially on weekends and the months of July and August.It offers ample opportunities for biking, horseback or steam train rides; or to enjoy a picnic in the shade of leafy flamboyants, bamboo and other species that make it a vital part of the green lung of the city.Founded on April 22nd of 1972, this recreational site has restaurants, light food selling points, amusement park, swimming pools, rodeo area and art galleries, among other facilities.

Expocuba Fair GroundHighway Rocío, km 3 �, Arroyo Naranjo.

"IN EXPOCUBA WE HELP YOU KNOW CUBA", So reads the slogan identifying the major fairground (in Cuba). Inaugurated on January 4th 1989, it shows the advances achieved by the country in all its fields. Important national and international events have their headquarter inExpocubathroughout the year. Among them, the International Havana Fair in November has emerged as the most significant.Its location in front of the National Botanical Garden and its proximity to Lenin Park and the National Zoo is among its advantages.

Zoological NationalHighway Capdevila and Camino sur Final. Boyeros.

Located in a very varied topography, this zoo is distinguished from the rest of the country´s because animals, whose lifestyle so permits, coexist in free communities.Among the most popular areas is the Lions' Den, a depression with large trees, rocks and caves; as well as the Great African Meadow. This place has lakes for the hippos, and other surrounding tracts for giraffes, zebras, antelopes, rhinos and other African species. It is considered by some a bird migration corridor, ranking fifth among Cuban areas with more groups of birds observed.For visitors there are didactic-recreational activities, as participatory games, talks on live animals, conferences with the use of audiovisual means, among other activities. The visit to Cuba's National Zoological Park is a real safari on the outskirts of Havana.

National Capitol Paseo del Prado e/ Dragones and San Martín, Habana Vieja.

This majestic neoclassical building was inaugurated on May 20th of, 1929, and it marks the kilometer 0 of the nation's highways. With its dome of Renaissance style, it was designed so that it may host both houses of the legislature of the Republic, meeting there until the late fifties. In its meeting halls also developed the Constituent

The statue of the Republic of Cuba located there is the third largest indoors one in the world.

Christ of Havana Loma de Casablanca.

At the entrance of the port of Havana, to the left from ancient San Carlos de la Cabaña fortress and Casa Blanca town, stands majestically a colossal statue known as El Cristo de La Habana. Being over five decades, the Chris, was inaugurated on December 25th of 1958. It was built in Italy and shows the figure of Jesus standing with one hand on the chest and the other up, as if blessing, and his face is set to the city. One of the only three existing in the world, it is twenty feet high, and is placed over a three feet high base. It weighs 320 tons and is composed of 67 white Carrara marble pieces. The work belongs to Cuban sculptor Gilma Madera. Considering its location on an esplanade over a hill, its height raises to 51 meters above sea level, making it possible to see the Christ of Havana from different parts of the city.

National Aquario 3ra e/ 60 and 62, Miramar, Playa.

The Acuario Nacional de Cuba (National Aquarium of Cuba) is a science center specializing in researches, environmental education and promotion of the marine environment, its flora, fauna and ecology. Its main objective is to enhance culture and education about the care, conservation and rational use of the sea, the coasts and their resources. It opened its doors on January the 23rd of 1960.It has currently a dolphinarium with capacity for 1 200 spectators. Its shows present up to 8 trained dolphins simultaneously working. It also has a sea lion counterpart for sea lions shows, with capacity for 1 000 spectators. Underwater dolphin shows are also presented. It also counts with a 120 seat specialized restaurant.

Cathedral of HavanaEmpedrado e/ San Ignacio and Mercaderes, Habana Vieja.

Its construction began in 1748 as a Jesuit church and was turned into a Major Parish in 1777. Later, in 1788, it became the Havana Cathedral. Its baroque style is given, not by its carved ornamentation, but by the movement of the facade, the curved walls on both sides of the central door, the use of wavy and kinked lines, the presence of skewed columns and the use of spiral in the cornice. All these elements also constitute a starting point for decorating the cover of numerous Havana residences at the time. Originally, it had wooden vaults roof inside, but it was covered in the nineteenth century with a coating of plaster, simulating Gothic vaults decorated in the style of European churches. The floor, originally of stone tiles, characteristic of the eighteenth century, was replaced by marble in 1820. This church holds many secrets discovered over time. Ancient tombs, thousands of hand signatures on the walls and traces of slavery and art are kept here.

Palacio del Segundo CaboO’Reilly Nº 4 corner Tacón, Plaza de Armas, Habana Vieja.

It is an imposing building in the baroque style of the XVIII century, so named as it was the residence of the second authority in Cuba, after the Captain General in colonial times. It is located to the north of the Plaza de Armas and was built in 1772. Originally designed to house the Post and the Quartermaster during the Republic, the Senate until the construction of the Capitol in 1929, it was finally the headquarters of the Supreme Court and various academies. Currently, it belongs to the Ministry of Culture. It also hosts the Book Cuban Institute and Letras Cubanas and Arte y Literatura publishing houses. On the ground floor there is a craft and a bookstore.

Havana Trade CenterLamparilla No.2, Plaza de San Francisco de Asís

It is an office building in the center of the Old Havana. Its construction began in 1907 and ended in 1909. Since then it has been listed as one of the most prominent of the early twentieth century in Cuba. In a predominantly renaissance style, but with an eclectic character, the building has a very variously decorated façade. On its top was placed a bronze statue of Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, which is visible from a long distance. In 1995, it went through rehabilitation works to condition its spaces to accommodate elegant offices, equipped with the comfort required by modern times.

Partagas Cigar Factory Industria Nº 520, e/ Dragones and Barcelona, Centro Habana.

The construction of this cigar factory was the result of the rise in the second half of last century in this industry, distinguished by the fact that most large buildings devoted to it were located in the most central area of the city. Its outward expression is simple and is in accordance with the image made common at the time: strong and solid presence, regular distribution of elongated openings with moldings in the façade and balcony with iron railings. This is one of the largest opera houses in the world. It stands on the foundations of the former Nuevo Teatro (New theatres) or Tacón. Its façade is decorated with four sculptural groups representing Charity, Education, Music and Theatre. It has three halls, the main of which is Federico García Lorca. The other two are devoted one to an art gallerie and the other to lectures. This center is home to the National Ballet of Cuba, it also welcomes the main functions of the opera and the Teatro Lirico Nacional (national lyric theater), with zarzuela and operetta representations. Among the main events taking place here are the Havana International Ballet Festival and the Huella de España (Traces of Spain) Festival. Many renowned companies as the Royal Ballet of London, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Ballet of Antonio Gades, the Ballet of the Teatro Colón (Colón theater ballet), in Buenos Aires, the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico ( Mexico Folk ballet), among others, have performed in this theater.

Bacardi BuildingAve. Bélgica No. 261 e/ Empedrado and San Juan de Dios, Habana Vieja. The building was commissioned by the SA Bacardi rum company and is a gem of Art Deco. Its construction was completed in 1930 and was at the time the highest structure in town. In the late 90's it was restored under a project of the Office of the Historian of the City. With a steel and concrete structure, this building‘s facades are made of natural granite, terracotta and pressed bricks. The central part has a staggering form ascending up to the tower, with hip roof identifying it, the original place of the bronze bat, symbol of the company, resting on a glass polyhedron with metal armor illuminated from within at night. The outside part of the entrance hall was decorated with wine-red marble, exemplifying the color of rum honeys. For the upper floors bright yellow stoneware tiles were used, representing white-gold rums contributing to the world fame achieved by Bacardi rum.

The Revolution Museum Refugio Nº1, e/ Monserrate and Zulueta, Habana Vieja.

In obvious symbolism, the museum occupies the building fromerly occupied by the Presidential Palace. It functioned that way since it was opened in 1920 by President Menocal, until it was turned into the den of dictator Fulgencio Batista.Its more than 30 exhibition halls treasure about 9 000 pieces of the different stages of the independence struggle, covering every stage of Cuban history. The museum recreates the actions of March 13 at the Palace . Granma yacht, carrying in 1956 Fidel Castro and his men from Tuxpan (Mexico) to form the guerrillas in Sierra Maestra and undertake the revolutionary struggle, is now preserved in a glass mausoleum.Going deeper into the Museum of the Revolution and exploring its corridors is to navigate in the history of this heroic nation. Considered, upon completion in 1854, as one of the largest and most functional of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, this museum became National Museum on February 23rd of 1913. It keeps important collections; of greater value are those made up of Cuban and European paintings, and those of ancient art, mainly Egyptian, Greek and Roman.Among its valuable heritage elements

One of the most popular avenues in Havana, El Malecón, stretches over the city’s northern coastline, from the Castillo de la Punta, at the entrance of the bay, to La Chorrera fortress, at the entrance of the Almendares River, ma-king about 7 kilometers.Ideal place especially at sunset, taking place by the northwest of the city, it provides spectacular views for those who decide to go to enjoy them. The convent of San Juan de Letrán was founded on January 5 of 1728 , being the first university in Cuba, then known as the “Royal and Pontifical University of San Gerónimo de La Habana”. In the opening ceremony, Fray Thomas Linares del Castillo was appointed as its first rector over the original faculties: Arts and Philosophy, Theology, Canon Law, Law and Medicine.After a series of reforms, this university becomes a secular institution, and in 1850 its name is changed to Real y Literaria Universidad de La Habana (Royal and Literary University of Havana). In this second phase it foments its scientific development. With this aim, the Natural History Museum is founded, and the National Botanical Garden happens to be governed by the institution. La Rampa is an urban strip situated in the most centric part of the city. Its name is due to the slope of this street in its five blocks, from L and 23 to Malecón. Its sidewalks show paintings from Cuban artists of acknowledged international prestige. For this reason this place has become a walking museum. Going to Malecon from L street, to the left is Yara cinema, cinematographic cultural center and main venue during the Havana International Film Festival. Further on is the Pabellón Cuba (Cuban Pavilion), an expositional cultural center hosting events like Arte en la Rampa (Art at La Rampa) and the book fairs, as well as the Cuban video clip festival. Before reaching Malecon, the offices of the Civil Aeronautical Institute and the International Airlines are found. To the right, is Habana Libre Trip Hotel, and down the same street is La Rampa craft fair, El Karabalí nightclub and La Zorra and el Cuervo jazz club, the venue of jazz music. Finally, La Rampa cinema and other restoration centers are found.

It is the heart of Miramar and cer-tainly the most elegant road of Havana. Around it, the country's wealthiest citi-zens built their resting houses in the republican era. Today it has become an ideal area for tourist leisure, with nu-merous hotels, restaurants, theaters, an aquarium and shops with national or imported products. Other interes-ting places like the Iglesia de Jesus de Miramar (Jesús de Miramar Church), one of the most imposing of the city, can be found.

Its first stone was placed on October 31, 1871, and before its widening ending in 1934, it already had a room of 504 458.22 square meters. Rectangular - shaped as a Roman camp in the romantic-Byzantine style, it has numbered sidewalks, streets and roads, providing visitor an easier access within the city, which in republican times was warranted with the provision of flat model).The square located in the central street between the chapel and the huge front entrance, was called Christopher Columbus, since plans to erect a monument to the discoverer to keep his remains, never going beyond the Cathedral of Havana, ironically, had been made, but were not accomplished. For that reason, since then, the cemetery, dedicated to the Great Admiral, full of famous sculptures but without any of him, was given his name. This cemetery is full of curious epitaphs, as the slab carved with domino "Double Three", for an old fan of this game lost with that card in her hand.This place is full of myths and legends such as that of La Milagrosa slab, where rests Amelia Goyri Adot, who died in 1901 at the time of delivery. This slab has a marble statue of a woman with her child, clutching to a cross.

Havana model came out of a project beginning in 1987, and it was conceived as a tool in the urban planning of the capital. How to find your way around

Havana?

Mainly light, casual clothes, with light colors that are more suitable for the average pattern of warm temperatures of the island. The cotton tissue will be the most advisable to wear, due to its softness and freshness. In any case, there’s no harm in including some formal, elegant clothes for visits to cabarets or restaurants, which certainly require adequate outfits. If you have chosen for your trip December or January, the coldest months, you should also carry a jersey or light sweater, and if you plan to go to the beach don’t forget the swimsuit, sunglasses, and suntan lotion, nor strong footwear and mosquito repellent if you plan to go to the mountains or the countryside. Even though most of these items can be found in Cuba, in any case, it is more recommendable to bring it with you to ensure your favorite brands.

In the old areas of Havana, most streets have a patronymic denomination, whereas in El Vedado, Miramar, and other areas of more recent construction there is a numerical denomination. Habitually, the addresses are not only expressed by the name of the street and the number, but also by the names of the streets that delimit the block in which it is located. In a way that an address such as Paseo 115 e/ 17 and 19 indicates that the number 115 is located in Paseo street, in the block limited by the streets 17 and 19. Likewise, if the number 115 were situated in the corner of Paseo and 17, the address would be Paseo 115, corner 17.

TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT

Except for some places where you can find a 220 volt current, like certain very exclusive hotels of Varadero and Havana, the electric current in Cuba is normally of 110 volts and 60 cycles. This should be taken into account if you plan to bring any electrical appliances, and you should not forget the American-type flat adaptor

If you wish to call abroad you should dial 119 (Cuba’s exit number), followed by the country’s prefix, and finally the desired number.
