From 8.00am every morning........

A PLACE TO STUDYDifferent seating areas offer group and quiet study facilities. A separate, silent study room is also provided. So, whether you need complete silence, prefer to work with a friend, or need to carry out a piece of group work, we can accommodate you.

BORROWINGYou may borrow up to 4 items at a time and will need to show your student card whenever you borrow anything. The loan period is normally 3 weeks, but items can be renewed a couple of times either in person or over the phone. A penalty charge of 5p per day is made for each standard loan book not returned and 50p per day for short loan items.

RESERVATIONSYou may reserve up to 2 items at a time - ask LRC staff for instructions. We’ll let you know when the material is ready for collection. A charge will be made for items borrowed via the British Library Service. LRC resources and catalogue can be accessed off site, ask at the counter for a leaflet.

MAGAZINESWe subscribe to a wide range of paper-based and online magazines offering up-to-date information on general as well as specialist topics. Current copies are displayed in the LRC and back copies of many titles are sent to the relevant departments for you to access.

AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALSWe have an ever-increasing collection of DVDs which are available to borrow for one week, at no cost. And coming soon... Blu-rays.So whether you are a Media Studies student researching a particular genre, or just in search of a decent film for the weekend, we should have something for you. Do make sure you bring them back on time as there is a 50p per day fine for overdue items.

This leaflet is also available on Moodle

USING COMPUTERSAn automated PC booking system operates in the LRC. Either book a slot in advance at the kiosk machine or sit down at a free machine and log on with your student number and your chosen network password. Don’t forget to have your ‘student card’ with you as you may be asked for it.

Once you have logged onto a PC you will see three small boxes at the bottom right of your screen. These give you the facility to pause, extend or end your session.

If you should need to leave your PC for a short period of time, the ‘pause session’ facility will allow you to do this. It will stop other students from accessing your work or using your PC. When you return to your machine just type your student number into the box to access your work again. Beware! The system will automatically end your session if the PC is left for more than 5 minutes

If your session is coming to an end, warning messages will appear on your screen. Providing the PC hasn’t been booked by someone else you can click the ‘request more time’ box. This will give you an extra 30 minutes.

When you have finished with the PC, ALWAYS click the ‘end session’ box and confirm this by clicking the ‘ok’ button on the message that appears on your screen. Never leave a machine without doing this as other students will be able to access your work and use your printing credits.

When researching a topic, as well as using the internet, you will be able to access our range of on-line resources providing newspapers and journal archives and other information. Ask the LRC staff for details or consult the printed guide.

The LRC PCs are there to support your academic work. You will not be able to carry out certain activities, for example, social networking and playing games. The college cybercafé offers these facilities. More detailed guidance can be seen on screen every time you log onto an LRC PC.

PRINTING AND BINDINGThe LRC offers both black and white (mono) and colour photocopying. You will also be able to print or scan your work in black and white (mono) or colour To help you present your work, binding and laminating machines, plus a guillotine are provided. A variety of supporting materials may be purchased at the issue desk, such as laminating pouches, binding combs and covers.
