HISTORIC CENTRES AND EXHIBITIONS
The Oiasso Roman Museum, with its permanent exhibition, is the reference point for exhibits and information on the Roman era in the Bay of Biscay. This archaeological museum houses a collection of remains from the Roman era found in Irun, the city is referred to as Oiasso in Roman sources. This visit is a must, to get to know the archaeological heritage of the area. The Green Train gives you a ride through the Oiasso Roman City, with a visit to the necropolis at the Santa Elena Sanctuary and taking you past the Irugurutzeta Lime Kilns sitting at the foot of the Aiako Harria Natural Park.
The Menchu Gal Exhibition Hall is a permanent exhibition area to display the artistic career of the Irun artist, from the early 1930s until the 1990s. It holds some of the best-known works of the artist, hanging alongside temporary exhibitions of other artists such as, for example, Jorge Oteiza, Eduardo Chillida and Néstor Basterretxea.
In the butterflies of the world exhibition, visitors
can admire the beauty and colour of 7,000 real specimens of butterflies from all over the world. The visit is rounded off with viewing of a documentary about the biological life cycle of the butterfly (by appointment).

THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, ON IT WAY THROUGH IRUN
Since the time in the 11th Century when King Sancho the Great of Navarre made Irun part of the route to Santiago de Compostela, this city has established itself as a not-to-be-missed point on the Camino, serving as a link between France and Spain.
There are various options available if you want to try the Camino experience (Camino del Norte – the Northern Camino and Camino del Interior – the Inland Camino) for a few hours, or if you want to carry on along your journey towards the city of Santiago: Ramal de Santiago (camino de Santiago Branch Road and Camino Real (Royal Route).
CYCLING TOURS
The European EuroVelo 1 network which runs along the border of Gipuzkoa, Navarre and the French Basque Country, boasts the Euroziklo Visitor’s Centre, in an old customs building on the international Santiago bridge between Irun and Hendaye. The 80km of the Euroziklo route offer lovers of cycling holidays the very best of the Basque Country, on both sides of the river Bidasoa: coastal villages, wild coves, scenic areas, beaches, heritage, the Basque mountains and the Bertiz Natural park: a whole world waiting to be discovered!

SCENIC AREAS AND PARKS
The Plaiaundi-Jaizubia Ecological Park is one of the best marshes in Europe to observe some of the more than 312 species of bird which have been spotted in the area, about 60% of the total number of birds to be seen in the Iberian Peninsula. The abundance of birdlife in the wetland is due to that fact that this area is located on one of the main migratory routes for birds on the continent, meaning that numerous species make a stopover in the park’s lagoons.
Aiako Harria Natural Park.
The imposing solid mass of what are known as the Aia Peaks (Peñas de Aia in Spanish) rise between the rivers Urumea and Bidasoa. To their unique beauty, marked by their charac-teristic silhouette, is to be added their great geological interest, since this is the only granite massif to be found in the Basque Country and it is the oldest material in this territory.
Also within this natural area is the area corresponding to the Urdaburu-Añarbe range, with its impressive oak and beech woods, the fascinating Landarbaso Caves, and the sheet of crystal-clear water at the Añarbe reservoir.
Even so, the Aiako Harria’s main claim to fame is its fauna. Atlantic salmon still swim in the Endara stream, having also been reintroduced from the River Urumea, and the Pyrenean desman, and the European mink are to be found as well. In the grazing land surrounding the upper reaches of the Endara, harriers are to be found, and the rocky outcrops provide shelter for crag martins, alpine accentors and rufous-tailed rock thrushes.
The Urdaburu forest is home to European wildcats and roe deer, both of which species have come from the nearby mountains of Navarre. As well as other typical birds, there
is the eye-catching hawfinch; this is the only area in the entire Basque Country where it is to be found.
