    Guidance for the Electronic Submission of Assessed WorkUndergraduate Modules Levels 2 & 3

    All assessed work for the School of English at Levels 2 & 3 must be submitted electronically through Turnitin in theVLE:http://vlebb.leeds.ac.uk.

    Deadline: Monday, 9 May 2011 by 4.00pm

    Submission areas will be available two weeks before the deadline.

    ASSESSED WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN PAPER COPY. These submission instructions supersedethose provided in the School of English Undergraduate Student Handbook, 2010-2011 (available on the VLE:English organisation > Student Handbooks).

    Preparing your assignmentIn the Header section of your assignment (Insert > Header), enter your Student ID number, the module title, andthe submission month and year (e.g. March 2011, May 2011). You MUST NOT put your name on the assignment,but it is imperative that you include your ID number so we can identify your work.

    You should follow the guidance in the Handbook(section 2.3.3) for general presentation of essays. Word countshould be stated at the end of the assignment (Handbook, section 6.5.3 iv).

    The maximum file size Turnitin will accommodate is 20MB, which should be more than sufficient for mostdocuments. If your assignment contains particularly large images, please use the tool in Word to compress them(Picture Tools > Format > Compress Pictures).

    Submitting your assignment

    Go to the Module Area in the VLE. At the bottom of the left-hand menu you will see the Submission Area.

    In the submission area you will find:

    - a link to the VLE student guide submit an assignment using Turnitin:http://www.leeds.ac.uk/vle/students/guides/turnitin.htm

    - Guidance for Electronic Submission of Assessed Work at Undergraduate Levels 2 & 3 (this document)

    - The Turnitin assignment (titled with the date of the deadline) Click on the Turnitin assignment link: View/Complete.

    In the assignment inbox, click the Submit button.

    Choose single file upload. Enter your Student ID number as the Assignment Title.

    You must read the Academic Integrity statement before uploading your assignment. In submitting yourassignment, you are acknowledging that you have read and understood the regulations regarding plagiarism andpenalties for late submission.

    Click Browse to locate your file for upload and then click Upload.

    You will be automatically directed to an unformatted preview of your upload (which will not include footnotes).Formatting will be preserved at the final submission stage.

    Please verify that is the correct file, and click Submit

    If your upload is successful, you will be shown a digital receipt of your submission. You will also receive aconfirmation email to your University email address. You must retain this for your records as proof ofsubmission.

    You must always retain a back-up of your assignment on your own storage device (memory stick, hard drive,personal network space).

    Checking your submission

    You should now check your submission by returning to the Turnitin assignment in the Submission Area. ClickView/Complete and you will see that the status of the assignment shows as complete. Click on Show details andthen click on the title of your paper to view your submission in the document viewer.

    The Submit button is now labelled Resubmit. You may resubmit your assignment as many times as you chooseprior to the deadline. Previous submissions will be overwritten. At 4.01pm, resubmissions will not be permitted.

    Late submissions

    Assignments submitted after 4.00pm on the day of the deadline will be accepted by the system, but you will bealerted to the deadline having passed. A 5-mark penalty will be incurred for work submitted after the deadline up to

    4.00pm on the following day. If you do not have an extension, assignments will have 5 marks deducted for everycalendar day they are late (to 4.00pm), down to minimum mark of 20. Consult the Handbook(section 6.5.3 ix) forfurther details on penalties for late submission.

    Extensions

    Extensions for assessed work can only be granted by Mrs Delyth Burch or Ms Nicola Wildman. If you think youhave a case for an extension, you must contact Mrs Burch or Ms Wildman without delay and be prepared to explainthe circumstances. Supporting documentation will be required. Extensions should be arranged in advance of thedeadline.

    If you have an extension, you should submit your work as instructed above. The system will allow submissionslater than the main deadline. When you log in to the submission area, you will be alerted to the main deadlinehaving passed, but no penalties will be applied providing that your submission meets your agreed deadline (also by

    Computer problems

    Unverified computer / connection problems arenot acceptable as reasons for late submission. Therefore:

    (a) Always make a back-up copy of your work(b) Plan to submit in good time (do not wait until 3.45pm on the day of the deadline before attempting to

    submit)(c) If you do experience technical difficulties, ensure that you report the problem to the ISS Helpdesk

    Technical help

    If you have concerns that your work has not been submitted, or if you have not received your email confirmation,please contact the ISS Helpdesk immediately. You should also send a copy of your assignment immediately to theISS Helpdesk by email attachment:
