Father’s Day Carry-In Meal
Nurture Commission is planning for a
Father’s Day celebration on Sunday, June 16! Please bring in any old ties (we only need a few) for use as decorations. Begin looking for pictures of you and your father to share us on Father’s Day!
Guest Speaker Pastor Dave is taking some vacation from June 1-8. If you should need pastoral assistance before his return, please call upon Alyce Newman, Bob Gangwer or Terrie Glass. That Sunday, June 2, we are pleased to
have former WRCOB pastor, Mike Hostetter, as our quest speaker.
Discerning God’s Call In April we came together to begin a series of discussions to discern where God is calling us in the future. Our session was productive and many folks felt quite engaged by what came out. Come join us for the next step on Saturday, June 15 from 9 am – 12 noon. Terrie Glass will once again be leading our discussion. From our last discussion, a number of options were discussed and those that had the greatest support are now being further researched for our next conversation. Some discussion items:
1) the White Building; 2) the Preschool; 3) outdoor recreation space; 4) merge with another congregation; 5) children’s and young families
ministries; 6) racial diversity; 7) workshops as a community service.
Please pray for all of us as we discern where God wants us to be. Join us JUNE 15!
The month of June brings us 2 episodes of our
Moment in History — June 2 and June 23. Join
us in hearing more of our 100 year story.
O ne of the things that I have tried to continue to do since my work as a Rural Development Consultant in Nigeria,
from 1991 to 1994, is to find projects for a crew of men in the area of water resource development. There is only one man remaining from a crew of four that I worked with back then. The others have since passed. His name is David Hemena from Garkida. He is a farmer and finds these projects a great way to carry him through the dry season. We have just finished the repair of a water tank in Garkida at the EYN Mason’s Technical School. We built this tank in 2008 when I worked there as the Mission Coordinator. After 10 years, it needed repairs. The photographs show the recent repairs.
D avid, our crew, and myself built another tank, like the one in the photos, in Chibok also in 2008. It caught water off the
building at the Chibok Bible School, a part of the EYN Theological Education by Extension. David has informed me that it, too, is in need of repairs, most likely caused by the destruction from Boko Haram. It would be good to repair this tank before the rains come so that they might utilize the water come next dry season.
I n these past projects, I have reached out to congregations and districts for funding. The Northern Plains District and the
South Waterloo congregation has been very generous in helping to fund these projects. If anyone is interested in helping, please let me know. The Chibok’s project cost estimate is $600.
What Do You Tell Yourself Every Morning as You Start the Day?
June: Jeremiah would say, "The Lord has plans to prosper me and not to harm or fail me." Each month we will have a new statement of faith in the newsletter.
Meditate on it! Speak it every morning.

The Christian Education Commission is grateful to Janet Brunk for her leadership of Children’s Church and commend Janet for all she is doing for our children with this special program. We especially appreciated the series through Lent when Janet took the children on a journey to the cross. It is a real joy to see how enthusiastically the children respond to Janet and the Children’s Church program.
Another exciting development is Janet’s report that the children are showing growth and maturity – both spiritually and socially – through their experience together in Children’s Church. Because the children are maturing, the preschool room they’ve been using -- with toys and other attractions -- is no longer a suitable space. With the Church
Board’s blessing, Janet will be using the large first-floor space in the White Building for Children’s Church! The current tenants of the White Building are aware of this change and have no objections. Janet will make use of the room for the first time on June 9, then on June 16. After that Children’s Church is on the first and third Sundays of the month.
Christian Ed. will ready the room – cleaning it up to make a place for learning and craft activities and for displaying artwork, as well as a small worship area. The Commission has funds available to purchase tables and a white board to be hung on a wall. A dozen of the metal folding chairs from the Gathering Room closet will be moved to the White Building for use over there.
Our White Building has served many purposes over the years. It was our chapel as well as Sunday school and gathering space in our early days here. It has housed a nursery school, missionaries, a Mennonite congregation and our CARITAS residents. It was the place for bazaar and yard sale offerings, for family nights and youth group activities, for carry-in lunches, special programs and wedding receptions. We are happy to be able to use this space to enhance the experience and education our children receive through Janet’s exceptional work with Children’s Church.
If you have questions about any aspect of Children’s Church, please speak with Janet, Carol Goss or Ann Andrus.

Going to Annual Conference in July?
If not, we have a way to be part of it’s outreach and never leave Virginia! Join the Witness Commission in supporting the Annual Conference by helping to “Witness to the Host City” of Greensboro, NC. Pastor Dave has agreed to transport all the items we collect when he goes to conference. We have the entire month of June to collect items for BackPack Beginnings. Read more below and look for the collection boxes starting June 1st.
BackPack Beginnings
The Annual Conference will again be partnering with BackPack Beginnings in Greensboro for our Witness to the Host City as we did in 2016. The mission of BackPack Beginnings is to provide children in need with nutritious food, comfort items, and basic necessities. The organization was started in 2010 by Parker White, a young mother who wanted to help children in need in her community. From a few boxes of food on her dining room table, this organization has grown to a multi-program organization that now serves over 4,000 children. The organization is staffed 100% by volunteers!
How you can help
The Annual Conference has asked BackPack Beginnings what their most needed items are that Conference attendees can donate. Here’s what is needed (in order of need):
Also:
Gently used khaki/navy pants for boys and girls, sizes 8-14 Gently used jeans for boys and girls, sizes 2T, 3T, 4, 5, 6, 6X and 7/8 Gently used children’s athletic shoes, size 10-13 and 1-5

End-of-Year Report
What an exciting year for Hilltop Preschool! This year we hit a record of 79 students enrolled! We creatively
use every inch of all five classrooms for the program.
We enjoyed our annual celebrations such as our Fall and Spring Musical Programs, Halloween Costume Party,
Pastries with Parents Valentine’s Breakfast, and many more. Special guests also came to educate the children
including a Tooth Fairy (from a local pediatric dentist office), VDOT’s Touch-A-Truck, and Henrico Fire Fighters
just to name a few.
Hilltop has also made some very exciting changes throughout the year! We have hired B&F Enterprises, LLC
(Kevin Beers & Shaun Finchum) to create a new website, implement online enrollment and payment options for
parents, and create an online appointment calendar for tours. Kevin has helped in working to increase our
online presence and effectiveness with strategic ads and Google search options. With Barbara’s help included,
the preschool has also obtained a new brand new colorful logo! Check it out in the display case or down in the
hallway. We are so excited to see these things in action!
Looking forward, we have 10 weeks of Summer Camp on tap. This will run
from May 28th-August 9th. We offer different weekly themes, and end each week
with outdoor water play and popsicles.
As of May 1st, next year’s enrollment is already at 35 students. We are
expecting full capacity with a waiting list again.
The preschool continues to enjoy much success and a wonderful reputation in
the community. We are blessed to have a committed staff (5 teachers, 3
assistants) that truly shows love towards our students and creates a fun and
exciting learning environment.
I extend my personal appreciation to the church body, the Preschool Board, Pastor Dave, and Kevin and
Barbara Beers for all of your support. A special thank you as well to June
Diehl for her tireless volunteering!
We are looking forward to another GREAT YEAR!
Jackie Algood, Director
