Chairman’s Report I am reminded regularly by what I see taking place within our club activities of the wide range of talents and abilities we have within our membership. At our Club night on 23 February, Valda Hodges, Jennie and Colin Mackie gave us a superbly illustrated talk of their travels during 2009 through Chile and Argentina. Together they gave us a real insight into aspects of the history, geography and the culture of where they travelled.

It was apparent from the outset that these three are seasoned travellers, with the ability to do their research thoroughly and the nous to get issues sorted out when things don’t quite go according to plan. Throughout their travels, we saw photographs of spectacular scenery, a number of which had similarities within our New Zealand landscape. It was a really interesting evening – evidence again of the multitude of talent we have among us - thank you Valda, Jennie and Colin. Your committee has endeavoured to have a good balance of outside speakers and club members as speakers at Club nights, because we do have considerable talent in our membership. Our club has been involved for several years in the clearance of ‘wilding pines’ and again we have been able to assist on Saturday 20th March at Flock Hill station. We had a great response where 15 members spent the day along with other clubs in this Ecan project – another 7 offered to help, but we were restricted to the lesser number, because Canterbury 4 wheel drive clubs were providing transport. As well as doing our bit for the environment, $20.00 per person has gone into the coffers to help with training. Thanks again to all those who have supported this effort. As a club, we occasionally receive brochures advertising tramping or touring trips of a commercial nature. While the club has a policy of not promoting such things in ‘Going Places’, the committee has decided that this material will be available in future at Club nights for anyone interested. Regards to you all - Warwick Scadden

Club Captain’s Report Here it is autumn and the really hot tramping days are gone for another year. It’s time to think about our gear and the things we must carry in our packs. I have seen some rather small packs at times and I ( along with others ) have wondered if they really do contain a parka let alone some of the other essential kit we must carry in case we need them. Each of us has a responsibility to ourselves and as importantly to those whom we tramp with to be carrying the correct gear. Hearty congratulations and well done to those of you who are always properly outfitted. And thinking about our responsibilities to each other, here is a big thanks to those who always jump in and help our leaders on tramps. Leading can, for some, be a harrowing experience and our leaders deserve all the support and assistance we can give to ensure we have safe, fun trips. Another reminder- this time to leaders: Please always appoint a co leader - when the trip is advertised is good but if not on the day before setting out! Don’t forget we have first aid training available so get in touch to make a booking. I am still really enjoying being Club Captain - it is easy with such a receptive, open and fun loving membership. I have accepted nomination for the role again and if I am elected will do the job through till 25 September this year - this will be almost 3 years ‘in the saddle’. By that time (at least) the Club will deserve a fresh face as Captain. I will (if elected) remain on the Committee until the time of the next AGM. So to sum up this month - don’t forget: • Take the right gear - If you don’t already! • Be responsible group members and help our leaders - If you don’t already! • Do some training - If you haven’t done some for a while! • How lucky we are to belong to such a great Club - Stu McHugh

New topographical maps now released.

Club member John Macaulay has drawn our attention to the new NZ map series, available since later last year and which are in a format that is now standard to the rest of the world. MapWorld on the crn of Gloucester and Manchester has a good stock of these. They are printed in ‘portrait’ as opposed to the old ‘landscape’ layout. There is also a higher scale map 1:60,000 which covers all of Banks Peninsula for example which may be of interest to some members. - Ed

A party of six with Mary Brinsdon as leader and John Cameron co- leader had a great experience walking the Heaphy Track in mainly fine weather. Mary met up with her friend Carol at Takaka, who had baked a large Bacon and Egg pie for us ( still warm) and took us out to Browns hut giving us snippets of information about the area. At Perry Saddle Hut we met a group of eight Japanese ‘Over Sixties Trampers’ on a guided walk. Their guides carried their food and cooked them a three course dinner including Wine !! And Russell bravely had a dip in the Perry hut pool. On the third and fourth days we were delighted to see a good number of Powelliphanta Giant snails. The Bellbirds sang for us all along the track and Black Robins played around us as we ate morning tea. At Heaphy hut we enjoyed the Blue Heron and watched the Weka with her two fluffy chicks. We had our own masseuse Joan to work on aching backs. We all became addicted to a fun card game, Stop the bus, taught to us by Russell. At Karamea Mary had arranged for a van, driven by John over a ghastly road – well done John - which allowed us to visit the Big Rimu and the Oparara Park with its magnificent scenery and natural Arches and caves. To top it off, on our way home next day Mary had arranged a trip to the Denniston Plateau. We had a very happy and harmonious group, and a wonderful tramp, expertly organised - thank you Mary and John . - Elizabeth Griffin .

OVER FORTIES TRAMPING CLUB INC 7

Sandi Leith (leader), Beris Whelan, Diana Arbon, Ian Fussell, Ken Woolridge, Russ Kiddey, Sally Connolly and Liz Griffiths (scribe) endured the long drive south with lots of rain for the first club trip to the Hollyford in some 15 years. And then we had to wait another 2 hours extra beyond Te Anau for road clearance after a driver had spun a rental van 180º and over. Eventually arrived, as one does. However, we woke next day in Davy Gunn’s camp to brilliant sunshine.

We had a sensational early morning flight to Big Bay via the Pyke valley for a beach landing at low tide. Ian glimpsed the 5 Passes area he recently tramped in and we all got good views of Lakes Alabas-ter and Wilmot, as well as the Hollyford valley and views of the spectacular Darren mountain range. We had all day to explore, with rides on the local possum man’s quad bike, use of his kayak as well as his fishing reel to troll for trout, and to enjoy being with ‘Coaster’ his crazy Jack Russell. Dinner was cooked on a bonfire down at the beach (and, thanks to Ian, we had all but one of our dinners cooked on the embers, by river and lake-sides thereafter). And later, that first evening, Russ and Diana went spot-light spear fishing for flounder. With all the deer tracks and fish-ing this is paradise. Easy to stay in Big Bay for a week. And it was deserted apart from the hunter, his companion and ‘Coaster’, and us. It was a fabulous start to our walk. Next day en route to Martins Bay we saw several Fjordland Crested penguins, probably in moult. But how special is that !! Also seals rolling around in the surf having a good breakfast. All the huts are in really good condition and are superbly sited – and with lots of other fun people to meet. No need to hurry through this area. Some of the others joined us for great meals outdoors and also for Ken’s marvellous ‘how to get stoned without whisky’ game. Travel between the huts was beautiful with lots of interesting stops. A bonus was finding the divinely scented Easter orchids. Jamestown, established in 1870, was stunning for its stupidity – mail was delivered every fortnight by the postie running from Queenstown to Glenorchy and over the Harris Saddle till he died, and then, after too many ships came to grief at the river mouth, the settlement endured terrible isolation. And cattle, driven 250 miles to market, must have lost a lot of condition. Pretty crazy bit of history—but fascinating. The Demon trail is not hard but for some of us it was slow as it is definitely rocky and slippery. The 3-wire bridges are all simple and fun. We crossed to McKenzie Hut at the head of Lk McKerrow for morning tea on our way to Lk Alabaster and again we saw many very fresh deer tracks. Another place to return to as it is just so stunning. In fact two nights in each hut on the way would be great as every area is interesting and full of beauty. Our thanks to Sandi for her time spent initiating and organising this trip – plus our thanks for those beaut muffins at her home as we left. Great group, great place, great fun. Loved being able to come on this trip. Liz

WHEN : Tuesday 20th April - 1.00pm until 3.00pm

WHERE : Meet in the Bowenvale Ave (southern end) car park This is a project which we as a Club commenced on the Port Hills in 2009 with the planting of

native plants. It is an area designated as the OFTC site of ‘restoration planting’.

Previous trees planted are doing well ie have survived any drought and have not been totally smothered by weeds.

On 20th April, we will be doing maintenance ie clearing these weeds from around the young trees .

More planting is scheduled for May—so watch for the next notice—but meanwhile plant releasing from weeds is very important so do try to help with this on the 20th.

All tools will be supplied by the Council.

Colin Mackie ph 332 4587 is coordinating this project – names to him please
