Lake Atilan is surrounded by beautiful volcanos: Lago Atitlan volcano (3,537m), Tolimán (3,158m) and
San Pedro (3,020m). The lake is located 1,560 meters above sea level and is 18 km in length. Its depth,
which varies in many ways, is unknown but some expert says is more than 350m deep.
There are 2 stories of thought with regards to the origin of Lake Atitlan. One believes that the lake is an
old dead crater and the emergence of other volcanoes interrupted along the course of the three rivers that
come from the North, which by bringing water into the area, gave rise to the lake. The lake has no
visible outlet. It is also said that where the lake is now, was an island that was the epicenter of activity in
the Mayan Pre- Classic period (600 BC - . 250 AD), since at that time the Mayans were grouped into
regions.
