GUADALUPE GARDENER MAY, 2020
A monthly publication of the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners in cooperation with the Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension, Guadalupe County
Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well. I hope you have had some time to work in your
home gardens. I know mine is a big source of comfort and I was glad to get a little
rain making the weeds easier to pull. With all the additional home time it has
probably led to a little reflection. I see that our mission and passion in the garden
has an ever-increasing value to our community. I am getting more questions from
new gardeners and feel a change in perspective from a lot of people. I also see
that the skills have developed have become very valuable. Hopefully, in the next
month or two, we will be back at it.
In the meantime, I am preparing for the May lunch and learn. This
presentation will be on living off your garden. This subject was planned before the
shutdown but has become relevant. As of now, it will be done on Microsoft
teams which you will be able to attend from a PC or Smartphone. Please watch
VMS for the instructions and links. This format will allow me to share a
PowerPoint and will allow for questions and conversation. I do accept a learning
curve getting used to the technology. I might decide to do this presentation more
than once depending on feedback.
Please be safe and we will see you when we see you!

Lots of new gardeners! Lots of gardening questions! Lots of continuing education hours to be
earned! Our MG Facebook Page has had a very busy month and it’s not slowing down. Over the last 30
days, we’ve added 67 new members, a gain of 13% overall bringing our FB Group membership to 499.
Where’s that 500th person? Could it be you?
This month Jerry McNulty encouraged us to do “show off your gardens” tours and several
gardeners did just that. Mary Miller, Cindy Martin, Melinda Lucas, and Mike Chandler submitted photos
of all their hard work as well as many other garden enthusiasts. It’s fun to see what others have done
with their outdoor areas, lots of good ideas! Melinda also shared photos of the progress at the Marion
Veteran’s Memorial Park, good work all of you that, individually, volunteered to work there, it looks
great!
Robert Cox captured some fabulous shots of visiting hummers, and William Nodine posted photos
of his beautiful blooming Hong Kong Orchid Tree, absolutely stunning. Lots of members showed off
their blossoming yards and gardens, what a beautiful spring we’re having!
Hopefully, everyone is staying safe and healthy. Wash your hands! Don’t touch your face! Wear a
face mask in public and use hand sanitizer! We can do this!
Join us on Facebook! You too can share your photos, ideas, comments, questions, events, and
articles - all through our Facebook Group. It’s easy to join. All you need to do is log into Facebook and
in the search box type “Guadalupe County Master Gardeners,” the Group will show up, click on it and
request to join, you are guaranteed to be approved. Still, need help joining? Give me a call at (830) 379
-7203 or e-mail me at [email protected] and I’d be happy to walk you through the procedure for
joining the group or even how to create your new account for Facebook, all questions are welcome, and
to all the FB Group members, keep those photos, questions, links, and advice coming. We all enjoy the
posts. Thank you all for sharing!

As I was trying to decide what to write about this month I started looking through picture
folders. It always surprises me when I begin to look at all the folders on my computer and realize
just how many places I have traveled to in my life. You know from my writings that I love nature
and the outdoors. I have pictures of mountains, road signs, flowers, animals, scenic vistas, flowers,
birds, landscaping designs and did I say flowers?
I try to identify the flowers in my article, if possible. But sometimes they are just pretty and a
lot of the time I know I could never grow them in my backyard. The pictures I am sharing with you
this month were taken September 2008 in Mount Rainier National Park. I know that you might
think I took these somewhere here in Texas, but I assure you they were taken in Washington.
As we have families in other parts of these United States that we will probably not see for
quite some time under present restrictions, these flowers represent family members to our local
native flowers. I have been sheltered in place in my home now for more than four weeks and have
canceled two trips that were scheduled. My trips now are being scheduled for summer 2021. I
enjoy and am thankful for my yard where I can
sit and see flowers and all types of critters and I
know all of you are doing also. I hope these
pictures brighten your day!
