NETWORKS

“As Canada’s largest (and growing!) supercomputing centre, researchers across Canada rely on us to tackle their largest R&D problems. But with ever-increasing volumes of data, even our computers aren’t enough unless researchers also have fast, reliable access to their massive data sets. The partnership we have with GTAnet, their team, and their world class networking technology means that our partners in hospitals, universities, and businesses across Canada can focus on doing cutting-edge discovery and innovation on our systems instead of wondering how to get their data where it needs to go.”

Member InstitutionsWho We Are

GTAnet supplies its member institutions with direct high-speed network connectivity between each other, the Internet and the global research and education community, enabling connected researchers and educators to work with colleagues across Ontario, Canada and around the world.

Established in 2002, GTAnet is Ontario’s largest member owned regional high speed Research and Education network. GTAnet provides connectivity, support and services to universities, colleges, teaching hospitals and cultural institutions in the Greater Toronto Area.

GTAnet serves all Toronto area post-secondary students providing essential infrastructure, connectivity and services in support of higher education.

GTAnet member institutions represent over forty percent of Ontario’s research activities. GTAnet universities sponsored research income is valued at over $1.03 billion annually, representing almost 16 percent of Canada’s research activity.

Governance

GTAnet is a provincially incorporated, not-for-profit organization governed by an elected Board of Directors from the 19 member institutions.

Guided by the goals and objectives of its membership, GTAnet is an open, shared, member owned resource with a common objective to help enable research and collaboration through innovation in advanced networking and to bring strategic value to our member institutions and connected partners.

The Network

With 640 kilometres of dark fibre covering a 185 kilometre route through the Greater Toronto Area, GTAnet connects its members to one of two network points of presence (PoPs) located at the University of Toronto in the south or York University in the north.

Additionally, member owned fibre connects both PoP sites to 151 Front Street, the Province’s main telecommunications interconnect point, where GTAnet interconnects with ORION, the Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network, and commercial internet service providers.

GTAnet members can become members of ORION, which also provides connectivity to CANARIE, Canada’s national high-speed R & E network. GTAnet owns and operates all switching/routing equipment at both PoP sites. The GTAnet network is monitored 24/7 by its network engineering group based at the University of Toronto.

Connectivity Services

The primary service that GTAnet delivers to its members, through its partnership with ORION, is the provision of high-speed network connectivity to the rest of Ontario and, through CANARIE to Canada’s national R&E network, and to other advanced research networks around the globe.

Network Operations Support Services

The GTAnet Network Operations Centre has engineering staff on call 24/7 to immediately address any operational issues. The GTAnet Engineering group is available to assist members with connecting and maintaining their connectivity to the GTAnet network and its services.

Internet Access Services

GTAnet peers directly with two international tier-one Internet Service Providers (ISPs) resulting in tremendous value from volume purchase of commercial content provider services, for its members. Members may subscribe to any amount of internet bandwidth suitable to their requirements.

Dedicated Connections

GTAnet can provision dedicated high-speed light paths between any two points on the network to support collaborative research or high-capacity transfer of large data sets between members. VLANs and other networking services can be provisioned to enable special requirements, such as shared services between members.
