I love shopping for my home. Sometimes I do inspiration shopping – research – and other times I’m out to buy. I love when I happen to come across the perfect thing unexpectedly, but I’m a bit of a planner and a strategist when it comes to shopping for decor. I like to change things up and I love seeing what’s new as the seasons change, and discovering the new year’s trends. If you’re like me, you’re going to want to dig right into this issue and check out page 18, Lisa Canning’s 2016 home decor trends – it’s a guide to this year’s hottest. 2016 has a lot of promise, and some trends that I love – like tufted furnishings and the gold, rose gold and brass finishes. I like the move away from chrome, chrome and chrome. It feels softer, more elegant.Another big trend is doing custom, and this issue I had the pleasure of interviewing Yanic Simard. It was refreshing to hear this talented designer’s take on how to utilize custom furnishings, upholstery and accessories. On page 44 you can find out his insights on where to splurge and also which custom options won’t break the budget. Our cover story was inspired by a trend we’re seeing more and more – famous names on furnishings. Are those names just endorsements or are they in full control of product development when creating collaborative collections, like Samantha Pynn for Simons, GlucksteinHome and Lenny Kravitz for CB2? You can find out more in Famous names on home furnishings on page 12.And I did just mention Simons? Have you heard the exciting news? Turn to The scoop on page 27 for full details. We hope that you find great inspiration from this issue and enjoy shopping for your home in 2016!

OVER THE YEARS WE’VE SEEN tables

by Lenny Kravitz for CB2, Priscilla

Presley bedding, a King Coil mattress

collection by Charlie’s Angel Jaclyn

Smith. Ellen DeGeneres has a clothing

and homewares collection, ED by Ellen.

Ken Fulk recently did a collection for

Pottery Barn. Luxury Interior Designer

Brian Gluckstein has GlucksteinHome,

a full housewares brand. Colin & Justin

have their own line of products – and

Designer Samantha Pynn is launching

her fi rst collection for Simons. So

what does being famous and having a

collection or product line mean?

There’s a huge di erence between

collaborations and endorsements.

Many companies have tried the

celebrity endorsement. Did Britney

Spears have anything to do with

Pepsi? No, but she sure could sell

it. Michael Jordan, however, did

know a thing or two about what he

wanted in a basketball shoe. It’s about

selling lifestyle – the connections are

aspirational.

With Kravitz Design – his own

design company, Lenny Kravitz paired

up with CB2 to create a collaborative

collection. Launched in the fall of

2015, Ryan Turf, managing director of CB2, describes Kravitz as being

very passionate about design. More than just an aspirational style, he was

involved as both a designer and a collaborator. For CB2, says Turf, it was

a way to incorporate the music into their furnishings, since music is an

important part of the demographic – and in reverse, Kravitz is a fan of CB2

so he appreciated being part of a brand he enjoys.

The collection is earthy. It’s rock and roll. It’s geometric and reminiscent

of great 70s design. It defi nitely exudes that part of Kravitz that his music

fans know, relate to and love.

While this was a one-o collaboration, when pairing iconic names in the

design world with furnishing and home decor lines, you fi nd a more organic

development. Interior decor and design is all about creating beautiful

spaces, some designers have that desire to create furnishings they envision

for these spaces.

While designers can do this on a client-by-client basis – creating

custom textiles, customizing the shape, size or fi nish of a sofa or table –

creating a whole cohesive line for mass consumption is much more of an

undertaking.

Decorator, stylist, columnist and CityLine expert, Samantha Pynn is also

the host of Open House Overhaul on HGTV Canada. She’s just completed

a new decor line – The Samantha Pynn for Simons collection, launching

in February 2016. This is especially exciting as Simons, the much-adored

trends and fashion retailer from Quebec, will be arriving in the GTA in March

2016 at Square One Shopping Centre.

Pynn’s collaboration is the authentic design

experience – creating the prints, selecting

the colours, textiles, materials and developing

the pieces to the perfect specifi cations. “A

lot of times they want to put your name on a

collection. I wanted to be designing this from

scratch,” says Pynn. “I wanted to have a say – a

huge say.”

“Simons understood my editorial and design

background, and let me take the lead.”

The collection combines classic pieces with

contemporary style. There are great patterns,

textures and textiles. “The patterns, most are

really rooted in the classics – lattice, fl oral.”

There are fl orals, but not traditional little

fl owers, they’re big and stylized. There are

animal prints. There are geometrics, neutrals

and punches of colour.

“People are really looking for something

that will feel fresh for a long time, but still

want something to be classic, have longevity,

have legs,” she explains. “I don’t like disposable

design. I didn’t want to go über feminine.” It’s

a ‘something for everyone’ collection, and you

can see the strength of pieces as they work

alone or with others. Consumers can take

pieces into di erent directions depending on

the way they introduce them into their own

decor. “A collection,” she explains, “that makes

pulling a room together easy.”

Stores pull collections together all the time,

buyers do their jobs and curate, but when

connecting a well known designer’s name with

a collection, consumers have an expectation

– a reference to that name. It’s a challenge to

design a large collection. The client is broader

OVER THE YEARS WE’VE SEEN tables

by Lenny Kravitz for CB2, Priscilla

Presley bedding, a King Coil mattress

collection by Charlie’s Angel Jaclyn

Smith. Ellen DeGeneres has a clothing

and homewares collection, ED by Ellen.

Ken Fulk recently did a collection for

Pottery Barn. Luxury Interior Designer

Brian Gluckstein has GlucksteinHome,

a full housewares brand. Colin & Justin

have their own line of products – and

Designer Samantha Pynn is launching

her fi rst collection for Simons. So

what does being famous and having a

collection or product line mean?

There’s a huge di erence between

collaborations and endorsements.

Many companies have tried the

celebrity endorsement. Did Britney

Spears have anything to do with

Pepsi? No, but she sure could sell

it. Michael Jordan, however, did

know a thing or two about what he

wanted in a basketball shoe. It’s about

selling lifestyle – the connections are

aspirational.

With Kravitz Design – his own

design company, Lenny Kravitz paired

up with CB2 to create a collaborative

collection. Launched in the fall of

2015, Ryan Turf, managing director of CB2, describes Kravitz as being

very passionate about design. More than just an aspirational style, he was

involved as both a designer and a collaborator. For CB2, says Turf, it was

a way to incorporate the music into their furnishings, since music is an

important part of the demographic – and in reverse, Kravitz is a fan of CB2

so he appreciated being part of a brand he enjoys.

The collection is earthy. It’s rock and roll. It’s geometric and reminiscent

of great 70s design. It defi nitely exudes that part of Kravitz that his music

fans know, relate to and love.

While this was a one-o collaboration, when pairing iconic names in the

design world with furnishing and home decor lines, you fi nd a more organic

development. Interior decor and design is all about creating beautiful

spaces, some designers have that desire to create furnishings they envision

for these spaces.

While designers can do this on a client-by-client basis – creating

custom textiles, customizing the shape, size or fi nish of a sofa or table –

creating a whole cohesive line for mass consumption is much more of an

undertaking.

Decorator, stylist, columnist and CityLine expert, Samantha Pynn is also

the host of Open House Overhaul on HGTV Canada. She’s just completed

a new decor line – The Samantha Pynn for Simons collection, launching

in February 2016. This is especially exciting as Simons, the much-adored

trends and fashion retailer from Quebec, will be arriving in the GTA in March

2016 at Square One Shopping Centre.

Pynn’s collaboration is the authentic design

experience – creating the prints, selecting

the colours, textiles, materials and developing

the pieces to the perfect specifi cations. “A

lot of times they want to put your name on a

collection. I wanted to be designing this from

scratch,” says Pynn. “I wanted to have a say – a

huge say.”

“Simons understood my editorial and design

background, and let me take the lead.”

The collection combines classic pieces with

contemporary style. There are great patterns,

textures and textiles. “The patterns, most are

really rooted in the classics – lattice, fl oral.”

There are fl orals, but not traditional little

fl owers, they’re big and stylized. There are

animal prints. There are geometrics, neutrals

and punches of colour.

“People are really looking for something

that will feel fresh for a long time, but still

want something to be classic, have longevity,

have legs,” she explains. “I don’t like disposable

design. I didn’t want to go über feminine.” It’s

a ‘something for everyone’ collection, and you

can see the strength of pieces as they work

alone or with others. Consumers can take

pieces into di erent directions depending on

the way they introduce them into their own

decor. “A collection,” she explains, “that makes

pulling a room together easy.”

Stores pull collections together all the time,

buyers do their jobs and curate, but when

connecting a well known designer’s name with

a collection, consumers have an expectation

– a reference to that name. It’s a challenge to

design a large collection. The client is broader

to be a part of the equation, but

quality has to be key.

Quite attuned to the quality,

from the selection of fabrics to

the feel of the texture, Pynn’s

quality control was to test drive

products. She’d take home the

throws and try them out, sleep on

them, see how they’d feel to her.

She’d try out the mats to see how

they’d perform. “A well-decorated

home makes people’s lives

better,” she says, but ultimately, as

a professional, to put your name

on a collection as a designer is

to share your design concepts

and vision with everyone – and it

needs to measure up. Completely

di erent from endorsement, it’s

a statement about your talent,

about your vision and your design

sensibilities.

The collaboration process was

a consolidated e ort. “We pushed

each other in a positive ‘Okay, I’ll

try that’ kind of way,” says Pynn.

“Price was an issue but not a

limitation.”

Internationally known, and

highly acclaimed for his clean,

stunning, luxurious design, Brian

Gluckstein has done numerous

collections – and has gone

beyond to create his own brand.

GlucksteinHome was launched in 1999 and has grown and endured.

While the pricepoint makes his products more accessible than his interior

design fees, the intended consumer is broader. He describes the brand as

being for “someone who loves design and wants to elevate the aesthetics of

their home.”

As the brand, Gluckstein designs all of the products. “I love all home

product and I’m inspired so much every day to design more. It’s important

that I keep pushing the quality of product, through elevated design elements

and beautiful materials, while keeping the price points sensible. ”Aligning

with Hudson’s Bay has made GlucksteinHome very accessible to consumers.

“With Hudson’s Bay, we’re able to work with factories all over the world and

develop products in a scale that allows for that.”

The next time you shop, take a closer look at that famous name and you’ll

be able to get a better feel for who you’re bringing into your home.

1. Choosing the right size: when searching for a family room rug, always make sure it is large enough to sit the front legs of your sofa. The width should be the same as the sofa or a little bit wider. In a dining room, always center the table on the rug ensuring the rug is at least one foot around the table so the chairs fit comfortably as well. Always avoid a medallion pattern otherwise the table may hide the pattern.

2. Pattern and color: In a plain room (either by color or style) you are free to select a colourful rug, something to stand out and compliment the room. Don’t be afraid to play with color, texture and pattern. Choose freely and create your masterpiece!

A NEW YEAR BRINGS a fresh start, and

it can be the perfect time to bring in

change and embrace the year’s new

trends. Bring home what’s hot for 2016.

Fresh style for your home with these

2016 home decor trends is simpler

than you think!

1. VELVET FURNISHINGS

Soft and sumptuous, velvet

upholstery is a nod back to classic

Hollywood and feels beautifully

modern when done in contemporary

silhouettes and punchy hues. Whether

you bring home this trend in a principal

piece like this Jonathan Adler sofa, or

in a small pouf or ottoman, the luxe

quality of velvet will elevate any room.

2. MARBLEIZED PAPER PRODUCTS

Inspired by the natural and organic

veining of actual marble, marbleized

paper products are all the rage ranging

from notebooks, personalized writing

pads to art prints. This print by style

maven Stephanie Sterjovski can be

grouped in a gallery wall or displayed

on its own in a simple frame for an

elegant decor addition.

3. GOLD, ROSE GOLD, BRASS

Warm metallics continue to be a

strong trend in 2016. Popularized

last year in light fi xtures and cabinet

hardware, these warm coloured metals

will continue to shine in applications

like this modern barstool available

at Black Rooster Decor. If a furniture

piece is a bit too daring for you, bring

home this trend in an accent piece like

coasters or a side lamp.

4. APPLIED MOULDINGS ON WHITE WALLS

While wall paneling, crown and other decorative mouldings can be

a very traditional element of a room’s design make up, I argue when

juxtaposed against modern elements like a graphic area rug, and painted

out a fresh white, applied mouldings can feel modern and edgy. I love

using them in large-scale fl oor to ceiling panels as I did in my home gym.

5. TUFTED FURNISHINGS

Tufted sofas, chairs and ottomans are another classic element that

have been made new again for 2016. For maximum impact, consider a

tufted three-seat sofa with generous rolled arms. I also love the modern

update with the metal detailing on the Sa ron chair, available at Elte MKT.

You can also bring home this trend in a small ottoman or dining chair.

6. RECLAIMED WOOD

While not a new trend, the look of ancient, weathered and worn wood

continues to hold a strong presence in the market. Paired with solid

wood legs like this table from Artemano, or with contemporary metal

legs, bring home this trend with a dining table with a soul and a story.

ESTABLISHED IN 1994, COCO LEZZONE was an authentic favourite in

the trendy Little Italy neighbourhood it once called home. Moving

to a bigger, beautifully designed hotspot in the heart of Yorkville, its

following grew.

Coco Lezzone is more than just a restaurant, it’s a destination. The

combination of a well designed room that exudes the right ambiance

with a mouth-watering modern Italian menu has made this an

experience for dining and enjoying. Whether it’s a date, a family dinner,

a celebration, some take-away, private dining or a catered event, the

fresh ingredients and flavours speak for themselves – now pair a little

wine and life couldn’t be finer.

Having kept up with the trends without sacrificing quality or flavour,

Coco Lezzone serves up what diners want. Right now, owner Steven

Salari explains, “Tapas (small, finger foods) and small(er) dishes where

you can taste a bit of everything are very popular” – and a favourite

on his menu. Trends in upscale Italian dining include “homemade

food, including lobster ravioli, gnocchi and our signature dish, grilled

octopus.”

The restaurant is outfitted with a stone oven, and the difference it

makes is obvious. “Pizza is always very popular and we have two-for-

one pizza every Wednesday,” making this deal a great mid-week treat.

In terms of seating, decor and ambiance, Salari explains, “People

are looking for a multi-faceted dining experience where they can eat

and have a drink at the same time. Upscale dining is pairing food with

wine.” The wine list is well curated. It includes wine by the glass, and

moderately priced bottles – as well as a private cellar with quite a few

bottles that would impress most connoisseurs.

For those with great taste, a taste of something great

COCO LEZZONE

Having renovated the space a year ago, it’s

fresh and welcoming – and very on trend.

The style that’s hot right now, explains Salari,

The style that’s hot right now, explains Salari,

is “Miami influenced; modern chic – all white;

white sofas, black and white portraits, very

minimal and not too busy. It should feel warm

and cozy – with soft lighting.”

Technology is just as important. While the

right staff always completes the perfect dining

experience, “we’ve been focused on increasing

installed properly is key. James Hardie is a trusted brand because it

of your home has to work. It needs UV protection, has to deal with

hail, snow, ice, rain, humidity, aridity, wind and temperatures ranging

and durable, plus they’re flame resistant,

Modular Home Additions LOOKS AHEAD WITH PROVEN PRACTICES

THE INTERNET has left its mark on tradespeople and businesses, fueling a consumer desire for instant gratification and quick results. In addition, customers

have become increasingly more discerning when it comes to hiring companies for big jobs, especially in the home renovation industry. Research starts online, leading to customer reviews and referrals. Websites devoted to giving consumers a voice have become some of the most widely trafficked sites in the country. A single bad review can cost a company a significant amount of business.

With that, it’s not surprising that Toronto-based home renovation company Modular Home Additions is heading into 2016 with a list of accomplishments and a very bright future on the horizon.

In 2015, Modular Home Additions celebrated its 1000th home renovation project, a notable milestone in a city of fierce competition. Prior to that, Modular was awarded Best In Town four consecutive years in a row, an honor derived from a customer-based voting system. The company’s high HomeStars website rating (based on customer-reviews) has also lead to Modular winning HomeStars Best Of in the Home Renovation category.

While many companies are racing to complete projects quicker and more efficiently, the Modular Home Additions model has been offering a No Stress, No Mess model for years, offering results in just 3 days. The company’s

early adaption of technology has allowed them to execute projects throughout the entire year, while most companies are still working in just the spring and summer months.

The Modular system allows all structural components (walls, floors and roof) to be factory built in a temperature-controlled environment. Demolition occurs on the first day and pre-built items are installed within hours. A second storey to your home can be added in just 3 days.

While many people associate the word ‘modular’ to generic, a look at Modular Home Additions before and after gallery will prove that each design can be customized to preference in a beautiful way.

To date, Modular Home Additions has offered quick and efficient service since the company’s launch and has been executing the practices others are now working to implement well before its time.

With project speed and an adaptation of technology well under its belt, Modular Home Additions is looking forward to 2016 as a year to further enhance a well-received process.

While the concept of home renovations has remained steadfast throughout the decades, the industry has not managed to escape

pressures to adapt to the technological era.

Advice | RENO

Jo Alcorn is a design specialist and designer on HGTV’s Home to Win, out this spring. She has her own furniture collection, signature pillow and dog bed line and is known for her savvy design concepts.

Visit Jo at www.whitewashco.ca.

THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION clients have is that

a designer’s main focus is making things “pretty.”

Sure that’s an element we focus on, but more

importantly, we want to make sure a home is

safe and e cient so the homeowner can enjoy

it – visually but also structurally sound. Here are

the top things a designer can help homeowners

with that might not have crossed your mind (but

should!) when hiring a designer.

INSULATION – Ensuring proper materials are

used from the inside out should be a priority,

especially if you’ve had to remove mould. It’s

often a problem revealed when we get behind

the walls – commonly spots where there is

moisture. For small amounts of mould removal

I use Concrobium Mold Control (concrobium.

com). It’s a bleach-free, Health Canada-

registered non-toxic solution that’s safe –

even with kids and pets. You want to ensure

mould does not return, so I like materials that

help ensure a mould-free home. Certainteed

(certainteed.com) o ers a great product called

Membrain. It prevents moisture and air, and is

designed to help wall cavities breathe and stay

dry. I love that their products are sustainable;

insulation is made with recycled and renewable

content including a plant-based binder that

is formaldehyde-free and contains no harsh

acrylics, dyes or unnecessary chemicals.

WINDOWS AND DOORS – A key factor is

choosing windows and doors that fi t both style

and functionality. Are there small children?

Should the windows open inward or outward?

Are there cleaning concerns? I discovered

a Canadian company that manufactures,

delivers and installs windows and doors in

sometimes as little as a two-week turnaround

time (this is fantastic when working on tight

designer deadlines). Total Home Window and Doors

(thwindowsdoors.com) is one of the largest window

and door companies in Canada and, as an added bonus,

they o er a lifetime warranty on their products. This is a

company I can stand behind.

FLOORING – Colours, styles, textures, patterns, materials,

the list goes on. Flooring is essential to get input from a

designer. It’s labour intensive to install and not something

you can (or want to) switch up every couple years. While

hardwood or laminate is perfect for some projects, one of

my favourites is natural stone. It’s environmentally friendly,

easy to care for, durable, and adds a unique feature to any

space. On a recent project I worked with ErthCOVERINGS

(erthcoverings.com). They o er natural stone fl ooring

and wall coverings. A new trend in feature walls is to add

a stone veneer to a wall. I love that I can mix and match

the fl oor and wall options to create a sharp design with a

feature wall that is truly unique.

HEAT – I get asked all the time about heating options,

especially for older homes: What is most economical?

How can I cut down on heating bills? What’s the right

option within the room? One luxurious option I love is

in-fl oor heating. Surprisingly, it’s much more economical

than most people think. You can install electric radiant

fl oor heating under tile, stone and laminate/engineered

wood fl oors; Nuheat (nuheat.com) makes custom mats,

like an electric blanket, that perfectly fi ts the areas you

would like to heat. They o er a WiFi-enabled thermostat

allowing you to control your heating from a free app on

your smartphone so that you can adjust it remotely.

While you may feel you can tackle any or all of these

areas on your own, a designer’s input can be invaluable.

Designers are educated on all your options, know of

recent developments and new product introductions,

and have more than just the fi nal look in mind. Work with

a designer to get the practicalities right – and then we’ll

make it look pretty too!

Advice | RENO

Jo Alcorn is a design specialist and designer on HGTV’s Home to Win, out this spring. She has her own furniture collection, signature pillow and dog bed line and is known for her savvy design concepts.

THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION clients have is that

a designer’s main focus is making things “pretty.”

Sure that’s an element we focus on, but more

importantly, we want to make sure a home is

safe and e cient so the homeowner can enjoy

it – visually but also structurally sound. Here are

the top things a designer can help homeowners

with that might not have crossed your mind (but

should!) when hiring a designer.

INSULATION – Ensuring proper materials are

used from the inside out should be a priority,

especially if you’ve had to remove mould. It’s

often a problem revealed when we get behind

the walls – commonly spots where there is

moisture. For small amounts of mould removal

I use Concrobium Mold Control (concrobium.

com). It’s a bleach-free, Health Canada-

registered non-toxic solution that’s safe –

even with kids and pets. You want to ensure

mould does not return, so I like materials that

help ensure a mould-free home. Certainteed

(certainteed.com) o ers a great product called

Membrain. It prevents moisture and air, and is

designed to help wall cavities breathe and stay

dry. I love that their products are sustainable;

insulation is made with recycled and renewable

content including a plant-based binder that

is formaldehyde-free and contains no harsh

acrylics, dyes or unnecessary chemicals.

WINDOWS AND DOORS – A key factor is

choosing windows and doors that fi t both style

and functionality. Are there small children?

Should the windows open inward or outward?

Are there cleaning concerns? I discovered

a Canadian company that manufactures,

delivers and installs windows and doors in

sometimes as little as a two-week turnaround

time (this is fantastic when working on tight

designer deadlines). Total Home Window and Doors

(thwindowsdoors.com) is one of the largest window

and door companies in Canada and, as an added bonus,

they o er a lifetime warranty on their products. This is a

company I can stand behind.

FLOORING – Colours, styles, textures, patterns, materials,

the list goes on. Flooring is essential to get input from a

designer. It’s labour intensive to install and not something

you can (or want to) switch up every couple years. While

hardwood or laminate is perfect for some projects, one of

my favourites is natural stone. It’s environmentally friendly,

easy to care for, durable, and adds a unique feature to any

space. On a recent project I worked with ErthCOVERINGS

(erthcoverings.com). They o er natural stone fl ooring

and wall coverings. A new trend in feature walls is to add

a stone veneer to a wall. I love that I can mix and match

the fl oor and wall options to create a sharp design with a

feature wall that is truly unique.

WHEN YOU HIRE A DESIGNER the

space they create for you is, of course,

custom. But the elements in that

room – are they a carefully curated

collection that will work in your space

or are they custom made, just for you?

Shopping Guide caught up with

celebrity designer Yanic Simard,

principal of the award-winning

boutique firm Toronto Interior Design

Group (tidg.ca), to ask him about

custom pieces, and he’s given us some

amazing insight into creating the best

custom essentials for your home.

Shopping Guide: Why custom?

Yanic Simard: My idea of comfort

is living in a space that feels right – a

personal retreat where you end up

at the end of the day, and it just feels

good. Going custom is the best way to

achieve that.

SG: Custom can be costly. Are there

cost-effective ways to get custom

looks?

YS: Upholstery. Custom upholstering

an entire piece of furniture, such as

an armchair or a sofa, can quickly add

up. But focusing on something simple,

like the seats of dining chairs, can be a

small investment with a big payoff.

This approach also gives you the

opportunity to create a lot of looks

that you are unlikely to find in a store,

such as matching your drapery to a

chair back for a statement that says

“custom,” loud and clear. This also

provides an opportunity to use a small

amount of high-end fabric for accents

and apply a plainer and more durable

material to high-impact areas, such as

the seat, for the best of both worlds

(and a balanced budget).

SG: Are there areas where you more strongly recommend going the

custom route?

YS: Drapery. As with upholstery, custom draperies can require investing

in materials and labour. However, a custom drapery treatment is by far

the best way to achieve an elegant look, especially for windows of an

unusual size or walls that do not perfectly suit a pre-made panel. This is

why custom drapery is generally considered worth the investment.

In many cases it is possible to extend a ready-made panel instead of

starting from scratch. In much less time than it takes to make a panel

from scratch, a seamstress (or skilled DIYer) can cut the bottom of

a packaged curtain and attach a panel of a second fabric, creating a

perfect-length, colour-block statement without the full price tag.

SG: Do you recommend customizing pieces of furniture?

YS: Creating a custom piece of furniture for a client is many designers’

dream, but it can sound more like a nightmare for homeowners. The

cost, time, imagination and decisions required can make choosing a

custom piece seem overwhelming compared to simply dropping by a

store and walking away with a new find.

SG: Are there any design issues that are more easily

overcome with custom options, where you tend to prefer

custom?

YS: Mirrors for the bathroom. Custom inset mirrors solve

a lot of issues in bathroom design. They expand a space

visually, and they also replace a large area of tile, allowing a

seamless, fully tiled look without requiring as much material

to be purchased. When you use a mirror wall to wall or fl oor

to ceiling – and skip the frame cost – you’ll save even more

while getting a perfectly polished look.

It’s a good idea especially in a compact bathroom, letting

you splurge on a smaller amount of must-have stone and

doubling the look of it.

SG: What are some of the current trends in customization?

YS: There’s a big trend to upcycle, so if what you have is in

good condition, customizing the fi nish is becoming a popular

option. Beautiful, colourful cabinetry can be rare, especially

in the exact hue of your choice. In fact, you’re more likely to

fi nd a dated or drab shade if you’re living in an older home.

If the existing units are in good condition, having the fronts

sprayed with a new fi nish can be very reasonable in price

compared to a full replacement.

The same can be said for salvaged vanities. Whether your

look is eclectic, traditional, modern or rustic, a salvaged

furniture piece used as a vanity can make for an excellent

twist in any bathroom. A simple coat of paint (or just a sealant

to keep worn-in character as is), a few cuts and a basic block

vessel sink can transform nearly any furniture piece into a

bathroom vanity. You can also try adding a solid slab to create

a more traditional countertop, or take an inexpensive cabinet

frame and replace just the doors to achieve a unique look

while still providing plenty of closed storage.

SG: Are there any customizations that are particularly

infl uenced by the client?

YS: Art – this is defi nitely one element that needs to speak to

the client on another level. In a Miami condo space I recently

designed, I wanted to bring a sense of South Beach artistic

fl air without letting it swallow the budget. I found high-

resolution images created by a local artist online and had

them printed directly onto acrylic. If you want to customize

art for yourself, ask a local printer what materials they can

print on, and try something fun, like canvas, cloth, parchment,

plastic or even wood. The result will be unique art pieces with

a true artistic story, but without the art-auction price.

And of course, there are also many good reasons to buy a

one-of-a-kind original piece of art from your local gallery.

Sometimes just a little change goes a beautifully long way.

WHEN YOU HIRE A DESIGNER the

space they create for you is, of course,

custom. But the elements in that

room – are they a carefully curated

collection that will work in your space

or are they custom made, just for you?

Shopping Guide caught up with

celebrity designer Yanic Simard,

principal of the award-winning

boutique firm Toronto Interior Design

Group (tidg.ca), to ask him about

custom pieces, and he’s given us some

amazing insight into creating the best

custom essentials for your home.

Shopping Guide: Why custom?

Yanic Simard: My idea of comfort

is living in a space that feels right – a

personal retreat where you end up

at the end of the day, and it just feels

good. Going custom is the best way to

achieve that.

SG: Custom can be costly. Are there

cost-effective ways to get custom

looks?

YS: Upholstery. Custom upholstering

an entire piece of furniture, such as

an armchair or a sofa, can quickly add

up. But focusing on something simple,

like the seats of dining chairs, can be a

small investment with a big payoff.

This approach also gives you the

opportunity to create a lot of looks

that you are unlikely to find in a store,

such as matching your drapery to a

chair back for a statement that says

“custom,” loud and clear. This also

provides an opportunity to use a small

amount of high-end fabric for accents

and apply a plainer and more durable

material to high-impact areas, such as

the seat, for the best of both worlds

(and a balanced budget).

SG: Are there areas where you more strongly recommend going the

custom route?

YS: Drapery. As with upholstery, custom draperies can require investing

in materials and labour. However, a custom drapery treatment is by far

the best way to achieve an elegant look, especially for windows of an

unusual size or walls that do not perfectly suit a pre-made panel. This is

why custom drapery is generally considered worth the investment.

In many cases it is possible to extend a ready-made panel instead of

starting from scratch. In much less time than it takes to make a panel

from scratch, a seamstress (or skilled DIYer) can cut the bottom of

a packaged curtain and attach a panel of a second fabric, creating a

perfect-length, colour-block statement without the full price tag.

SG: Do you recommend customizing pieces of furniture?

YS: Creating a custom piece of furniture for a client is many designers’

dream, but it can sound more like a nightmare for homeowners. The

cost, time, imagination and decisions required can make choosing a

custom piece seem overwhelming compared to simply dropping by a

store and walking away with a new find.

SG: Are there any design issues that are more easily

overcome with custom options, where you tend to prefer

custom?

YS: Mirrors for the bathroom. Custom inset mirrors solve

a lot of issues in bathroom design. They expand a space

visually, and they also replace a large area of tile, allowing a

seamless, fully tiled look without requiring as much material

to be purchased. When you use a mirror wall to wall or fl oor

to ceiling – and skip the frame cost – you’ll save even more

while getting a perfectly polished look.

It’s a good idea especially in a compact bathroom, letting

you splurge on a smaller amount of must-have stone and

doubling the look of it.

SG: What are some of the current trends in customization?

YS: There’s a big trend to upcycle, so if what you have is in

good condition, customizing the fi nish is becoming a popular

option. Beautiful, colourful cabinetry can be rare, especially

in the exact hue of your choice. In fact, you’re more likely to

fi nd a dated or drab shade if you’re living in an older home.

If the existing units are in good condition, having the fronts

sprayed with a new fi nish can be very reasonable in price

compared to a full replacement.

The same can be said for salvaged vanities. Whether your

look is eclectic, traditional, modern or rustic, a salvaged

furniture piece used as a vanity can make for an excellent

twist in any bathroom. A simple coat of paint (or just a sealant

to keep worn-in character as is), a few cuts and a basic block

vessel sink can transform nearly any furniture piece into a

bathroom vanity. You can also try adding a solid slab to create

a more traditional countertop, or take an inexpensive cabinet

frame and replace just the doors to achieve a unique look

while still providing plenty of closed storage.

CANYON STONE CANADA OFFERS THE LARGEST SELECTION of lightweight natural and manufactured stone veneer, thin brick veneer and faux stone siding products through an ever expanding Canadian distribution network. Their quality products have been designed for both interior and exterior residential and commercial wall applications providing the consumer with a wide variety of products and price points for their projects.

The Natural Stone Veneer collection has been created by blending rock from local quarries. Each is carefully selected to produce an aesthetically pleasing assortment of colour, texture and shape. Choose Natural stone veneer, when only the “real” thing will do.

Manufactured stone veneers are hand-crafted and molded from natural stones which give the illusion that these are real stone. Why does a consumer choose this stone veneer over a natural product? Budget and a larger variety of colour options.

For contemporary or modern looks a Natural Ledge or Quartzite Ledge panel may be the stone veneer of choice. These cut natural stone preassembled panels are easy to install and add texture and beauty to your project.

Brick Veneer continues to gain popularity in the residential and commercial interior decoration market. It has the authentic look of reclaimed brick installed on your wall without sacrificing more than an inch of floor space with amazing results.

The most recent addition to the product line is Polymer Stone Siding. As beautiful outside as inside, as traditional as it is contemporary, faux stone siding was designed to inspire a world of possibilities no matter what your style or vision.

These products are the easiest of all their products to install while still getting that look of stone.

Canyon Stone Canada’s products meet the demand of today’s consumers looking for a lightweight solution when adding stone to their project.
