Testers came from any backgrounds (cont.)

Blank The tester who likes to play

    games and, following a friends

    advice, applied for a game

    testing position.

the only way a Blank becomes

good is on that rare occasion

    when some undiscovered

talent is revealed that turns out

    to be immensely helpful

Testers came from any backgrounds (cont.)

Technician They often have attended at

    least one technical school, and

    they might even be

programmers already. Theyknow and love the machine.

    Lacking observational skills, the

    Technician doesnt have the best

    eyeand cant hear that well

    either. Their analytical skills and

    knowledge of code are huge

    assets to the team.

Testers came from any backgrounds (cont.)

Artist Artists love film and music and

are usually able to draw and

    paint.

    Artists have amazing eyes. They

can see every single visual bug

    even the smallest ones.

Hybrid A Hybrid has the soul of an Artist

and the skills of a Technician

    often someone with a

programming background, butwho enjoys drawing on the side.

Hybrids can also be fast thinkers,

and they are able to switch

modes in the blink of an eye.

Hybrids might also turn out to be

    leaders, suddenly becoming very

    valuable to developers

    Testing Disciplines

Not testing techniques but knowledgeareas of testing.

    Testing Disciplines :

    Balance Testing

Balance testing ensures that gameplay isfair to both the human and AI player alike.

If one is too powerful, theres something

    wrong.

    Compatibility Testing

the process by which the game is testedwith multiple hardware configurations.

The objective is to make sure the game is

    fully compatible with parts and

    peripherals found on the market.

    Compliance Testing

The process to get certification fromvendors.

Sony has what is called TRC (Technical

    Requirements Checklist).

Microsofts is similar, but not the same: TCR

    (Technical Certification Requirements).

Nintendo uses the same term it did for Super

Mario Bros. in the 1980s: Lot Check.

    Bugs

unexpected: No one creates bugs onpurpose; if it seems like it was done on

purpose, its an Easter egga different

    animal altogether.

    defect, fault, law, or imperfection:

Something is wrong; it makes the game

    worse, ugly, or unplayable.

    Low Priority Bugs

It often makes no difference to thedevelopment team whether they are fixed

    or not.

Examples of low bugs are minor graphical

glitches, a short sound distortion, some

small error in the user interface (including

    a typo,)

Any error that does not impact the flow

or the way the game is perceived in a

    major way.

    Medium Priority Bugs

should be fixed. They occur more oftenthan low bugs.

would annoy a player, but not affect

    gameplay.

    High Priority Bugs

Seriously affect gameplay; they makeeverything stop in its tracks.

Example : cant open a door and that

same door ends the level, you got yourself

a high bug, cant change weapons, the

frame rate drops to 20 fps instead of the

    usual 60.

    Critical Bugs

must be fixed at all costs. Causedisasters such as crashes, freezes, and

    data corruption.

    Example : a 50-hour saved game

    corrupted in one sweep,
