families.”Beginner and seasoned

DOVER -Flavorful herbs are easy to

grow outside during the summer months in pots, window boxes or raised bed gardens. Under the guidance of Master Gardener Leslie Stevens, families can learn how to plant and nurture an herb garden on Saturday, June 21 at 10:15 a.m. at the Children’s Museum. This is a free workshop but reservations are requested to ensure that enough plant materi-als are available for all.

This workshop is part of the annual “Anyone Can Grow Food” program created by the Museum and sponsored by Stonyfield Farm. Children and adults will help plant an herb garden in the raised garden beds behind the museum, along the

Cocheco River. Participants will be able to taste the fresh herbs and learn to identify them for harvest-ing later on. Everyone will get an herb seedling to take home and plant, and children can visit with a friendly small animal guest from Leslie Stevens’ farm.

In the fall, the garden-ing program will conclude on September 27 with a session on how to harvest ripe fruits and vegetables, and kids can dig up the potatoes that were planted in the spring. Using vegetables and herbs from the garden, families can help make salsa fresca and share other ideas for garden-fresh recipes. There is no charge to par-ticipate in this program.

To reserve a spot in the workshop, call 603-742-2002.

PORTSMOUTH -In 2014, Tuckermans at

9 is celebrating ten years of ‘Rockin’ A Cappella’ for loyal fans and excited newbies alike in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. But far from resting on its laurels, the group keeps reinventing itself. When Tuckermans at 9 returns to the Café Nostimo stage on June 21, things will look – and sound – a bit different.

“We reached a point in our development that demanded adding a full-time vocal percus-sionist,” says group founder and baritone Mark Miller of Dover, New Hampshire. “We’ve always sort of taken turns cre-ating the drums sounds for our a cappella shows, but bringing on Tim Bull of Hampton, New Hampshire, allows the rest of the singers to really focus on, well, singing. And now, after all these years, if you count our sound technician, there are fi-nally nine members of Tucker-mans at 9!”

The event will be held 8-10 p.m. at Café Nostimo, Madi-son Village, 72 Mirona Road in Portsmouth. Plenty of free parking and no cover. Table res-ervations for groups of five or

more available and encouraged. Please call 603-427-9286 or visit

Are you thinking of investing in munici-

pal bonds? If so, you may have good reason, particu-larly if you are in one of the higher tax brackets. After all, municipal bond interest pay-ments typically are exempt from federal income taxes, and possibly state and local income taxes, too — although some “munis” are subject to the alternative minimum tax. However, since not all mu-nicipal bonds are the same, you’ll want to know the dif-ferences — especially in terms of risk.

Municipal bonds, like corporate bonds, essentially face two types of risk: interest rate risk and default risk. In-terest rate risk becomes clear when market interest rates rise, causing the value of your existing municipal bonds to fall. No one will pay you full price for your bonds when newly issued bonds carry a higher rate — so if you plan on selling bonds before they mature, you risk losing prin-cipal. You can largely ignore this type of risk simply by holding your bonds until ma-

turity, at which point you will receive the face value back, pro-vided the issuer doesn’t default.

And that brings us to the second type of risk: default risk. Historically, municipal bond default rates have been much lower than those of cor-porate bonds, particularly low-er-quality bonds. But different types of municipal bonds carry different levels of default risk. Here’s a quick look at the two main categories of municipals and their risk characteristics:

General obligation bondsGeneral obligation bonds

generally finance projects of a municipality. A general obli-gation bond issuer is required to do everything in its power, including raising new taxes, to ensure that interest payments are paid on time and in full. This requirement helps support the creditworthiness of general obligation bonds.

Revenue bondsRevenue bonds, which fi-

nance schools, hospitals, utili-ties, airports, affordable hous-ing and other public works, are paid by dedicated streams of revenue. For example, revenues

generated by the sewer system pay the interest on a sewer system revenue bond. Because revenue bonds have more re-stricted revenue streams than general obligation bonds, they are generally viewed to be riskier. To compensate for the added risk, revenue bonds usu-ally pay a higher rate of interest than general obligation bonds.

When studying the risk factors of revenue bonds, you also have to consider the type of revenue bond involved. For example, some sectors, such as housing and health care, may be more volatile, as are some in-dustrial revenue bonds. (These bonds, which are generally used to support a specific proj-ect, such as a new manufactur-ing facility, are sponsored by a government entity — but the proceeds go to a private, for-profit business.)

Of course, when evaluat-ing the risk potential of munici-pal bonds, you don’t have to rely on guesswork. The major bond rating agencies — Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch — review municipal bonds to de-termine their creditworthiness. There are no guarantees, but by

sticking with the bonds that are “investment grade,” you can help reduce the risk of owning a bond that goes into default.

Municipal bonds can be valuable additions to your port-folio. Besides providing income that’s free of federal taxes, these bonds offer you a chance to help support valuable proj-ects in your community. But, as we’ve seen, different “munis” have different risk factors — so make sure you know exactly what type of bond you’re pur-chasing before you write the check.

DOVER -Jethro

Jethro is a giant love-bug who loves people. He is well suited for most medium energy homes. He enjoys a nice long walk and game of fetch, but also loves relaxing indoors. Jethro could use some prac-tice walking loosely on a leash, and could benefit from a little extra exercise. Due to his size it is recommended that he go home with children 8 and older.

Jethro came in to Cocheco Valley Humane Society because he was possessive of his things with the other dog and cat in the home, so he must not go home with other animals. Age: 3-1/2 years. Sex: Neutered Male. Breed: Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever.

For more information, con-tact Cocheco Valley Humane Society at 262 County Farm Road in Dover, 603-749-5322, or www.cvhsonline.org.

PORTSMOUTH -The Portsmouth Advo-

cates present the second annual series of guided walking tours lead by Richard M. Candee, author of Building Portsmouth. The 2014 schedule begins at 1

p.m. Saturday, June 21, and fea-tures five Portsmouth neighbor-hoods and explores the unique architectural landscape and the stories embedded in the bricks and mortar.

The first tour will highlight

Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating.

At a patriotic program, Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of your-self.”

Inspired by these three de-cades of state and local celebra-tions, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Wood-row Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Ashore, Cmdr. Huey served as a Junior Officer De-tailer at the Bureau of Naval Per-sonnel in Millington, TN, and as Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic Nuclear Power Officer.

the landmarks of Downtown Portsmouth, among them the Portsmouth Athenaeum built in 1805 for the NH Fire & Marine Insurance Company, the Old and New Custom Houses and the major churches of the city center. Other tours in the series cover Portsmouth’s South End in July, followed by the Brick Act of 1814 in August and Hay-market Square and the Victorian West End in the fall.

Portsmouth Advocates is a preservation group that pro-motes the maintenance of the historical and architectural in-tegrity of the city and encour-ages the preservation and resto-ration of significant structures.

The Advocates are dedicated to the preservation of our city’s unique historic character as an essential part of making Ports-mouth a better place to live and work. Candee, is a Profes-sor Emeritus of American and New England Studies at Boston University, where he directed the Preservation Studies Pro-gram for nearly 30 years. He has published nearly a hundred articles, essays, and reviews as well as four books specifically about Portsmouth. He has been Chairman of the Warner House Association, President of the Portsmouth Athenaeum and is President of the Portsmouth His-torical Society.

This July Discover Ports-mouth will also unveil a new series of guided walking tours for visitors and locals interested in learning about the historic cul-ture of our city. The tours have been developed based on three narratives: Portsmouth’s 19th c. Fires, Portsmouth Rebuilt, and Portsmouth Looking Up.

All tours begin at Discover Portsmouth located at 10 Middle Street. The cost is $10 for mem-bers of the Portsmouth His-torical Society and $15 for non-members. Each tour is limited to 20. Reservations are required, call Discover Portsmouth at 603-436-8433. For more information, visit PortsmouthHistory.org.
