Fall has arrived! I know the autumnal equinox is still more than 3 weeks away, but for all intents and purposes, Summer is over. School has already been back in session for a couple of weeks now, the Lawrence outdoor pool closes next week (much to my daugh- ter’s chagrin!), and even the weather here in northeast Kansas has been rather Fall-like lately. With the return of Fall, the newly elected GSK Council is getting to work planning for the year ahead. I am looking forward to working with this enthusiastic group of Council members (Abdelmoneam Raef, Samantha Reid, Spencer Mus- grove, Rick Miller, Rick Saenger, and Jim Womble) over the next two years. I also would like to take this opportu- nity to thank our outgoing Council members, Past Presi- dent Dennis Hedke and Secre- tary Bob Francis, for their dedi- cated service to the GSK. Both Dennis and Bob have been a part of the GSK Council since our society was formed in 2005 and have put a lot of time and energy into the growth and development of the GSK. Al- though Dennis’s term as a coun- cilor has ended, he will continue to serve as our Advertising Chairman. The first meeting of the 2009- 11 GSK Council was held on August 25 (via conference call, since we are a geographically widespread group, located in Manhattan, Oklahoma City, Houston, Lawrence, Wichita, and McLouth – Let’s hear it for teleconferencing technology!). We discussed some proposed changes that we feel will benefit the GSK membership. Plans that we hope to implement dur- ing the upcoming year include: streamlining the membership renewal process by providing members with the option to pay dues online moving one or two technical meetings each year to loca- tions such as Manhattan, Lawrence, Emporia, or Hays, to allow for more student participation in the GSK holding a banquet in the Spring, as both a social gath- ering for our members and a venue for honoring our scholarship recipients. Stay tuned for more details on these items. Also, if you would like to see the Council work on any other items this year, please let us know. We are continually looking for ways to better serve our members. Fall is also the time when we resume our monthly technical meetings. We already have several talks lined up that promise to be both interesting and informative (see the Pro- gram Chairman’s Column on page 2). Our first technical talk of the season will be on Sep- tember 24, when we will hear about “Improving the Imaging Capability and Interpretability of Seismic Data through Proper Parameter Selection” from Bill Pramik of PGS. I hope to see you there! With the beginning of a new school year and a new GSKS board, it sounds like it is also a time for a new interesting start for the GSKS technical program. I have been recently privileged with the oppor-tunity to serve as a VP and technical program chairman for the GSKS. It is an opportunity to try to fulfill the expectations of the GSKS members, to serve the wellbeing of our technical program, and assist the GSKS president. This season the technical program of our geophysical society is to host several interesting presenta-tions by fellows of professional fame. These include September 24 Bill Pramik, PGS Onshore, Improving the Imaging Capability and Interpretability

of Seismic Data through Proper Parameter Selection October 22 Bill Goodway, SEG Honorary Lecturer–North America, EnCana Corporation,

Canada, The Magic of Lamé November 11 Luke Wilkens, SLB Z-Seis, Crosswell Seismic Technology December (TBA) Martin Terrell, ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company, Time Lapse Seismic Off

Shore West Africa We look forward to these enriching and thought-invoking presentations, and ask that our society mem-bers support GSKS by their attendance. We are also looking for high caliber speakers for future invita-tion. Please contact me at [email protected] or 785-532-2240 if you have information on any potential future presenters.

“… if properly applied [seismic acquisition param-eter selection] can have a greater impact on seismic data quality than almost anything else we do.”

Bill Pramik VP, Geophysics & Quality PGS Onshore

There have been many re-cent advances with respect to seismic acquisition technology and each of these, in their own right, has contributed to the con-tinual improvement we see in seismic data quality. There is, however, one technology area that if properly applied can have a greater impact on seismic data quality than almost anything else we do. That technology is seis-

mic acquisition parameter selec-tion.

The seismic wavefield that we record during acquisition contains a large number of events. Events that have traveled down into the earth, reflected one time from a lithologic inter-face and returned to the surface are called signal. Everything else we put into a category called noise. The problem with much of this noise is that it can often overwhelm the signal, generally does not decay in amplitude as fast as the signal, and travels

with a significantly slower ve-locity. To be able to address the noise in data processing, acquisi-tion parameters designed for the noise, rather than the signal, need to be considered.

Seismic noise generally travels with a slower velocity than our desired seismic signals and, because of this, requires more stringent acquisition pa-rameters. Smaller bins, higher fold, and improved distribution of offsets and azimuths are

Support Team. Pramik’s duties at PGS have included being designated Team Leader – Geophysical Support which lead to Global Team Leader – Geophysical Support.

Pramik is a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received his degrees in Geophysics with a special emphasis in Mathematics in 1979.

Prior to joining PGS, Pramik worked for Amoco Production Company from 1979 to 1995. During this tenure, he gained experience in data processing, seismic interpretation, seismic field operations, VSP acquisition and specialized processing. In 1989, He was assigned to Amoco’s Tulsa Research Center where his focus was on developing job specific Seismic Acquisition Methods along with directing the Problems and Solutions group. Pramik was selected to the official position of chairman of the Seismic Acquisition Technology Team, responsible for quality control of seismic survey design.

usually the results of a noise based survey design. Fortunately, the same types of parameter modifications required to address the noise issues also result in improved sampling and imaging of our desired signal events.

These principles have been applied to a number of 3D surveys with excellent results. Data examples from the Wichita Mountain front in Oklahoma and the deep Bossier trend in East Texas demonstrate significant improvements in data quality, both in the reduction of noise, and the imaging of complex structure. The results are data sets that are significantly more interpretable.  BIOGRAPHY
