INDIANA SOUTHERN RAILROAD
In November 2003, the Indiana Southern Railroad bridge over theWhite River experienced a failure in one of the concrete/stone piers. The railroad authorities asked Crouch Engineering (CEPC) to proposea design to replace the pier that had caused the railroad to take thebridge out of service. The railroad authorities had also planned forreplacing the pinned through truss spans, which had been costing $1million per span.
CEPC proposed a creative design that would not only replace thefailed pier but also replace the low rated pinned through truss thatwas bearing on the failed pier, for about the same cost as the pierreplacement.
Working closely with Indiana Southern Railroad, Inc., suppliers, andcontractors, CEPC designed the new bridge, obtained agencypermits, ordered materials, and bid out the construction of thereplacement structure. CEPC performed all project management andengineering tasks including planning, surveying, permitting, designing, bidding and construction project management.
Due to the low prices CEPC obtained for the replacement of the firsttruss, the railroad company decided to replace the second throughtruss span. The total project cost was $800,000, as opposed to $2.35million had a traditional approach been taken.

Case Study case 2 • 2009
As the only Green Restaurant Assoc-iation certified restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee, Tayst Restaurant & Wine Bar, a restaurant dedicated to sustainability, brings in fresh ingredients daily from local farms. The use of locally produced foods carries with it a bit of unpredict-ability such as a constantly evolving menu and flexibility during severe weather. As a result of this ever chang-ing atmosphere, restaurant owner and Chef Jeremy Barlow has to be ready for anything that comes his way.
For Barlow, the most important part of his restaurant, and consequently the part that requires the most of his attention, is the food—his passion and the reason he opened Tayst in 2004. But due to a previous bad experience with a water heater at another restaurant, Barlow has always felt the need to keep his eye on the back room.
This changed when Barlow recently installed the A. O. Smith iCOMM™ system, a service that monitors water heaters and boilers and alerts users of any faults or areas of concern regarding their water heating equipment. Barlow can now put all of his attention where it’s most needed rather than having to focus on the status of his water heaters; the iCOMM system watches the water heaters for him.
“Now, with the iCOMM system, I don’t have any worry, any concern about the restaurant having to shut down because the water heaters have stopped working,” Barlow said.
The iCOMM system’s remote connectivity to the iCOMM
Web site allows users to proactively manage, monitor and interact with their full fleet of A. O. Smith water heaters and boilers from
