January 24, 2012

Since its inception more than 16 years ago, G.S. Proctor & Associates has remained a business dedicated to contributing to the community in which it functions and thrives. It was from our community that we sprang, and it is because of our community’s support that we grew. For the tremendous support we have received, we are exceptionally grateful. The G.S. Proctor & Associates’ commitment to giving back to our community is a small way for us to express that gratitude.

What follows is a summary of our most recent expressions of gratitude. This report by no means offers a complete picture of G.S. Proctor & Associates’ giving, but we hope it will serve to highlight a few of the people and organizations whose positive contributions to our community’s continued growth and success we are proud to support.

Inside this giving report, you will see our efforts to impact three important spheres of local life: community, religious and educational. We have also devoted some space to explaining a few of our favorite giving traditions at G.S. Proctor & Associates. If you are interested in more information on any of the projects or organizations listed in this report or would like to know how you can help, please do not hesitate to contact us through our website, GSProctor.com.

During the legislative session, it is important to remain focused on our core mission of serving our clients and community. As we continue to work together to address Maryland’s most pressing issues, we would like to thank each of you— our clients, family and friends— for the

steadfast support and assistance you have provided us.

As this legislative session develops, please renew your commitment— as we have at G.S. Proctor— to continue helping build our communities. Let’s also renew our commitment to live in peace, provide for our families and give our children the opportunity for a better life.

Sincerely,

Gregory “Steve” Proctor

At G.S. Proctor & Associates,

responsible giving is an integral component of our corporate identity. We fully acknowledge that the community is our greatest asset, and we strive to continually show our gratitude to the many citizens of the communities in which we work. We view responsible giving as more than a responsibility or obligation; it is a core belief of every G.S Proctor team member, a charge for us to deploy our unique skills with the singular goal of improving the lives of those with whom we interact daily.

When it comes to responsible giving, G.S. Proctor & Associates brings a unique advantage to the table: our preexisting community relationships. For few other firms is responsible giving such a natural outgrowth of its core mission. This unique position allows G.S. Proctor & Associates to target its responsible giving to make the largest impact at the individual level. The firm is also able to leverage its existing relationships to make sure that support is given to the organizations poised to meet the community’s most pressing needs.

Spanning direct donations to local foundations, athletic sponsorships, academic

scholarships and even seats at sponsored events, there are few spheres of community life left untouched by G.S. Proctor & Associates’ giving.

The Washington Adventist Hospital Foundation’s

core mission is to help provide whole person healthcare for all. Working in close collaboration with the Hospital itself, the Foundation develops relationships with philanthropically-minded people and organizations to help support the hospital achieve its healthcare goals. The Foundation’s initiatives include breast cancer screening for underserved women, a cardiac outreach

program to promote lifestyle change in those communities most at risk for heart disease and a dedicated fund to assist cancer patients with their basic and everyday needs. At G.S. Proctor & Associates, we share Adventist Hospital Foundation’s commitment to making whole-person healthcare available to all.

Mission of love

ChariTies

An anchor in the Prince George’s community, the

Mission of Love Charities’ primary mission is helping the most underprivileged residents in the Prince George’s area meet their immediate needs. In the last 20 years, The Mission of Love has grown from a purely local organization to a regional group of charities, whose work directly benefits over 10,000 people.

G.S. Proctor is proud of being a long-time supporter

of the Mission of Love’s work. Over the years, G.S. Proctor has supported the Mission of Love with donations, volunteered countless hours of time and most importantly, partnered directly with the Mission of Love to disburse over 500 holiday turkeys to families in need every year. The Mission of Love’s expertise and community knowledge has proven invaluable in determining the families who deserve most to participate in this tradition.

D.C. United, the District’s MLS Soccer team, is

more than one of the most successful clubs in the MLS; it is also a responsible member of the greater Capitol region community through the work of its charitable arm, United for D.C. One of United for D.C.’s most important contributions to the community is United Reads, a program designed to encourage children to fall in love with reading and build their personal libraries.

United Reads visits area elementary schools and works with D.C. United stars to communicate the importance of reading at an early age. During these visits, students can meet their favorite players, listen to a story read aloud and even begin building their library with help from the program. United Reads also maintains several “reading corners” at local children’s health facilities, providing children with a safe and fun reading refuge.

Just as deserving families need a resource

on which to draw for support, underprivileged communities need a driven organization designed to advocate for solutions to their particular problems. That is where the United Communities Against Poverty (UCAP) steps in.

UCAP’s commitment to working against poverty in the most disadvantaged communities makes it one of the most effective

charitable institutions in Prince George’s County. With a history going back to the 1960’s, UCAP is also one of the most versatile charitable organizations in the County. This versatility means that UCAP can offer help to the underprivileged at every step on their road to independence. Everyone at G.S. Proctor believes that an organization as dedicated to alleviating poverty as UCAP deserves our support, and we are proud to have done our part.

The g.s. ProCTor annual holiday Turkey drive

Much of the giving that G.S. Proctor engages

in is related to supporting charitable organizations in the community. The experience and skill which these dedicated organizations bring to serving our community is unparalleled, and we are honored to see our support magnified and directed by them. However, every year the G.S. Proctor Team is afforded the opportunity to partner with a select few charitable organizations and engage directly with the community to provide holiday meals to local residents. This annual event is a tradition held close to heart here at G.S. Proctor, since not only does it allow us to show our gratitude for a successful year, it connects us with the community we serve in a different and rewarding way.

Each year, G.S. Proctor & Associates partners with The Mission of Love Charities, The Ministers Alliance and others to provide and deliver over 1,000 holiday meals to community members who might otherwise be left without. These meals feature a turkey and are large enough to feed the whole family. The G.S. Proctor Team is intimately involved in every stage of the process, from organizing donations and coordinating delivery efforts to personally delivering the meals to

deserving families.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of this tradition for the G.S. Proctor Team is the way it connects us to the community. The preparation and delivery of the holiday meals serves as a powerful reminder of the good we can achieve when we work together for the betterment of all. The G.S. Proctor Team will continue this tradition with our partners in years to come. This year, we were proud to partner with the following organizations: The Cordish Companies, Faison, Meyers, Rodbell & Rosenbaum, P.A., Old Line Bank, Pepco Holdings Inc., Pleasants Construction, The Patuxent Companies, and The St. Charles Companies. Without these partners, this giving tradition could not continue.

religious giving

Religious organizations in Maryland play an integral role in developing and maintaining the bonds that hold a

socially and geographically diverse state together. Whether the event is a sermon or a cookout, a wedding or community meeting, Maryland religious organizations play a critical role. G.S. Proctor & Associates happily partners with the following organizations in this role to which they are so well suited:

• The Greater Mt. Nebo Church- In Partnership to Aid the Country of Malawi

• The New Community Church of God in Christ

• Tree of Life Christian Ministries

• Asbury United Methodist Church

• Jeremiah’s Circle of Friends

• Salvation Ministries Inc.

• Free Gospel Church of Bryans Road

• Union United Methodist Church

• The Ministers Alliance of Charles County & Vicinity

• The Sanctuary at Kingdom Square

• The Collective Empowerment Group

• Coalition of Maryland Ministerial Alliances

Page 10: G.S. Proctor & Associates Giving Report

10

An integral part of any thriving community is its

growth. The development of relationships across communities contributes to this process. The Ministers Alliance is an organization focused on this kind of relationship building across communities. While based in Charles County, the Alliance is comprised of more than 40 churches from across the greater Southern Maryland region.

G.S. Proctor shares the Ministers Alliance’s commitment to building relationships. This shared goal brought the two into a rewarding partnership.

Led by Reverend Jonathan Weaver, the Greater

Mt. Nebo Church is based in the City of Bowie. The church’s commitment to being actively involved in the Prince George’s community has benefited the County as a whole. However, Prince George’s County is not the boundary of Greater Mt. Nebo’s ministry. The church is particularly active in Africa and maintains close ties with a number of West Africa villages.

G.S. Proctor & Associates has partnered with the church to support the country of Malawi. Together, we have provided goats for a number of villages in Malawi. Providing everything from milk to fertilizer, these goats play an integral role in the country’s development. For example, giving goat’s milk to infants helps prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child.

Many of the religious organizations G.S.

Proctor has partnered with also strive to meet more than just the spiritual needs of their congregations. Reverend Jonathan Weaver saw one of these needs unfulfilled when he formed the Collective Empowerment Group. Originally designed to provide assistance to member churches in negotiations for financial services, the Collective

Empowerment Group has since developed a full range of financial assistance services. Representing over 200,000 parishioners, the Collective Empowerment Group already has a strong record of achievement, including generating over $300 million in loans for its members. In the current economic and financial climate, the CEG is an indispensable organization. G.S. Proctor is proud to be a partner.

Committed to its congregation and the

wider community, the New Community Church of God in Christ is an excellent example of the good work religious organizations can do. Founded in 1990, the New Community Church began in Pastor Willie Hunt’s home living room. Soon, the congregation outgrew Pastor Hunt’s home, and continued to witness phenomenal growth since. With this growth, the New Community Church

has continued to expand its outreach ministries. The New Community Church of God in Christ is built on outreach and devoted to supporting the wider community. The Church regularly opens its doors to the greater community by hosting events for men and women, respectively, and organizing youth outings. The Church also maintains a vibrant evangelical outreach ministry.

eduCaTional giving

The team’s dedication to supporting the education of future generations is well documented. We strongly

believe there is no more powerful or effective way to give back to our community. We also hold dear the conviction that education is the great equalizer; whether it’s a second chance to pursue one’s dreams or the gateway to future opportunities, education holds the keys to solving some of the largest challenges facing communities across the nation. G.S. Proctor & Associates has partnered with:

• The Alumni Association of Ballou S.T.A.Y Program

• Bishop McNamara High School

Often, the greatest reward of responsible giving is seeing its positive effects in the community. G.S.

Proctor & Associates is grateful for the opportunity to have sponsored a variety of athletic teams and sporting events. These sponsorships made a meaningful and immediate impact on their recipients. Regardless of the result of these competitions or the success of the sponsored teams, the experience provided them will prove valuable for life.

Prince George’s Circuit Court Judge Herman

Dawson does much more than hand down verdicts. Recognizing that the young Prince Georgians needed encouragement in addition to the justice the legal system dispenses, Judge Dawson founded the Rising S.T.A.R.S Scholarship Foundation to provide misled youth the opportunity to better themselves. Rising S.T.A.R.S focuses on school attendance, personal grooming and self-improvement. Often,

rising s.T.a.r.s

the change is drastic: young people who were several months ago on the brink of being sentenced to juvenile detention are seen accepting essay prizes and reporting 3.5+ GPAs. Judge Dawson’s brand of tough love and relentless encouragement has been instrumental in the rehabilitation of countless young Prince Georgians.

With nearly 1000 6th, 7th and 8th graders

enrolled, the Charles County Benjamin Stoddert Middle School is the archetypal community school striving to educate the next generation.

The Soaring Eagles’ school motto describes the school’s commitment to education: “Pursuing the promise and making miracles happen everyday!” G.S. Proctor & Associates is honored to have had the opportunity to partner with Benjamin

Stoddert Middle School to support their commitment. Steve joined his sister Wanda Proctor, who organized an annual career day for the students. This career day allows students to begin deciding on a rewarding career early in their academic lives, and gives them the opportunity to dream about what kind of future their education will provide for them.

The PHI Community Foundation Golf

Tournament is a great yearly event that brings businesses from the greater Capitol region together to make a positive impact on the community in which they work. Plus, everyone gets to play some golf. It doesn’t get much better than that, and G.S. Proctor is a regular supporter of this fantastic event. The PHI Community Foundation Golf Tournament

is now in its 6th year, and is only growing in its scope and impact. The last tournament raised over $200,000, bringing the total contributions during the tournament’s existence to well over $1 million. Those funds will directly benefit charities in the District as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Way to go Pepco Holdings!

Jay “Sky” Walker wanted to find a way to give

back to his community after spending four seasons in the NFL. The Sky Walker Flight School was created from his hard work and vision. Every year, hundreds of local athletes are given the opportunity to attend this intensive two day program. All lessons are taught by either current or former NFL players, who approach their position seriously and professionally.

In addition to the professionalism of its instructors, the Sky Walker Flight School is unique in its commitment to educating its students for challenges that arise off the field. Recently, the School has begun to offer an intensive SAT preparation program along with its football instruction. Most importantly, all of these services are offered free of charge. G.S. Proctor is proud to do our part to help.

Page 16: G.S. Proctor & Associates Giving Report

16

The ProCTor ProMise

The entire G.S. Proctor Team is of the belief that

there is nothing more crucial to the continued growth of our community than the successful education of our young people. There are many components of a successful education: parental involvement, extra-curricular and volunteer opportunities, dedicated teachers and of course, committed students. In order to do our part to ensure all students have the opportunity to develop into educated, successful members of our community, we made a promise- The Proctor Promise- to guarantee a class of students a college education if they put the work into getting accepted and demonstrate a desire to continue their education. This group of students, all from Matthew Henson Middle School, are guaranteed a full scholarship to the College of Southern Maryland should they complete their primary education and be accepted into the college. Much of the strength of the Proctor Promise lies in its substitution of an incentive for an impediment. Many excellent programs are designed to remove impediments to success, while others focus on incentivizing desired actions. Few programs go so far as to simultaneously remove

an impediment- in this case, the cost of tuition at an institution of higher learning and replace it with an incentive. The Proctor Promise is this type of program, and we can’t wait to see the results it will produce. Although it is shared by the entire G.S. Proctor team, the commitment behind the Proctor Promise is animated and driven by Steve Proctor himself: “You can’t just stop at making things work for yourself, it’s important to go beyond that. I want to make a mark between the birth date and the tombstone in the place that I was born and raised. It’s important to give back and build something beyond what you can touch today. My grandmother taught me that and it stayed with me.” The Proctor Promise is part of that mark, and emblematic of the commitment the entire firm brings to the community in which we all live, work and thrive.

ConClusion We couldn’t be more grateful for the

opportunities we’ve had to work with some of the most dynamic, critical and fun organizations in our community. Together, we have worked to improve the lives and situation of our neighbors. In the course of our work, we have had a chance to witness personally the incredible kindness, faith and charity that define community life. Of course, all of our best intentions would mean little without our partners. These organizations all share in common two things: a relentless drive to improve the lives of those around them and the local knowledge necessary to achieve their goal. We are always impressed when our partners take the support we provide, whether great or small, and direct it to those whom it will benefit most. We would also like express our gratitude for the individuals in our community who commit themselves to helping others. Their sacrifice serves as an example for us to follow. Without these individuals, the organizations that are now so effective would be left empty. The most striking part of giving at G.S. Proctor is the effect it has on our

team members. When asked about the company’s commitment, all of them speak about what they have learned from their involvement in various giving events and programs. The education we receive from our partners is one of the most valuable offered anywhere. It reminds us who we work for, and why we give back in the first place. Thank you.
