Girl Scouts Day of Service – Questions and Answers

Q: What is the cost of this event and what does it cover? Do I need to pay even if I’m volunteering? A: Yes, everyone pays $5 to participate, as this helps to cover the cost of the facility rental fee and the fun patch. There is also an option to buy lunch for $4.

Q: How can my troop participate? A: Troops can host a service project, attend to work on various projects, or donate supplies.

Q: What kind of projects can I do? A: Talk to your girls to find out what service projects they would like to work on and if they can host a project. Some ideas include: assembling utensilsets for SUNDAY SUPPER, making place mats for MEALS on WHEELS, fleece blankets for PROJECT LINUS, blankets or dog/cat toys, sew/assemble fabric hygiene pads for DAYS FOR GIRLS (older girls), lovies for THREADS OF LOVE (older girls); assemble joy jars for JESSE REESE NEGU; make hair bows, bead bracelets, knit scarvess/caps, assemble hygiene kits, first aid, school supplies, socks drive or toiletry kits for OC RESCUE MISSION, RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE; MAX LOVE, OC FOOD BANK; or SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK; make paracord bracelets or letter writing for OPERATION GRATITUDE; make shoes out of used jeans for SOLE HOPE and more! Let us know if you have any other suggestions you would like to add.

Q: What’s involved in hosting a project? A: Girls need to identify the service project they want to work on. If troop wants to host a table, start collecting project supplies, register your girls promptly to secure first preference on popular projects, prepare them to lead their project and bring supplies on day of event. Several troops in a SU can partner to host a table. Make sure to indicate on your online registration form which troops you will be working with so we do not double count.

Q: How do I sign up? A: There are a two (2) registration deadline dates. To attend – by 4/14/19 or until event reaches capacity. To host a service project and/or money earning booth - by 4/1/19. We recommend you register immediately once the online registration becomes available! This event is popular and fills up quickly. The online registration process will provide space for you to let us know if your troop is hosting a project, working on service projects or both, GS level, what project you’ll be hosting, if you can donate supplies, and how many people are participating. Qualifying girls working on Silver or Gold awards may apply for a money earning opportunity hosting the lunch booths or baked goods booth.

Q: What do I need to bring with me on the day of the event? A: We will supply tables, chairs and signage. Troops need to bring all the supplies for your project and tablecloth. Expect to provide enough supplies for approximately 300-500 people to work on. As the event nears, we will provide specific details and logistical information for all participating troops.

Q: What if I just want to donate supplies or what if I need supplies donated for kit assembly? A: There’s a place on the online registration process for you to specify if you would like to donate supplies, type and quantity (i.e. I will donate 100 soap bars and 50 toothbrushes) and there is also a section for troops hosting tables to specify if they need supplies donated/collected, types and quantity (i.e. pony beads for bracelets and 5 sets of 100 beads).
