The colour mayalso range from grey toblack, with darker coloursbeing more prevalent incolder regions,presumably owing to thethermal benefits of beingdark in colour. 7. Reptiles The viviparous lizard feeds on invertebrates, mostly small insects. It shakes larger prey in its jaws before chewing it and swallowing it whole. In early spring, late autumn, and cool summer days it basks in the sun to reach its optimum body temperature, which is about 30C. 8. ReptilesAny of several groups of venomous snakes of the Viperidae family including Vipera berus, the common European adder, found in Europe and northern Asia. 9. ReptilesAnguis, or the slow worm, is a small genus of lizard in the family Anguidae. It has two described species. 10. ReptilesIn East Africa, they arefound mostly inrivers, lakes,marshes, and dams.They have beenknown to enter thesea in some areas,with one specimenhaving been seen 11km off St Lucia Bay in1917. In Madagascar,they have adapted toliving in caves. 11. Birds The Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) is a small gull which breeds in much of Europe and Asia, and also in coastal eastern Canada. Most of the population is migratory, wintering further south, but some birds in the milder westernmost areas of Europe are resident. 12. Birds Avocets have long legs and long, thin, upcurved bills (giving their scientific name Recurvirostra) which they sweep from side to side when feeding in the brackish or saline wetlands they prefer. The plumage is pied, sometimes also with some red. 13. Birds It is a robust typicalwarbler, mainly greyin plumage. Like mostSylvia species, it hasdistinct male andfemale plumages: Themale has the smallblack cap from whichthe species gets itsname, whereas inthe female the cap isbrown. 14. BirdsThe Bar-tailed Godwit is a relatively short- legged species of godwit. The bill-to-tail length is 3741 cm, with a wingspan of 7080 cm. 15. Birds The Arctic Tern is a medium- sized bird around 3336 cm (1315 in) from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail. The wingspan is 7685 cm. The weight is 86127 g (3.0 4.5 oz). The beak is dark red, as are the short legs and webbed feet. Like most terns, the Arctic Tern has high aspect ratio wings and a tail with a deep fork.
